John Paulick is an industrial design engineer and an early adopter of the emerging discipline of biomimicry, aka sustainable, nature-inspired design. He is the creator of the Wine Hive and an inventRight student. The Wine Hive is a clever way of storing your wine collection that allows you customize its setup to your exact needs in a pleasing honeycomb shape. They are sold in modular packs; common sizes are 6, 12, and 24 bottle sets. Also comes in black, silver, gold, and nickel! At first — and many times — John attempted to license this idea. Cool product, potential licensees said! But they were wary that their customers would want to take on that much setup themselves. So John decided to launch on Kickstarter himself instead in March of 2012. His goal was to raise $15,000 for manufacturing and an initial production run. He ended up raising more than $65,000! It took a lot of work, but the supporters made it worthwhile. John is grateful to this day. Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews John about how he launched the Wine Hive using crowdfunding back in the day and what happened next.
