In this episode, we will discuss how the knowledge of self creates strength and purpose and also the impact of a lack of self knowledge. You oppress a people by taking their language, their religion, and their name. All those things were inflicted upon the African American community through multi-generational physical, emotional and psychological trauma.
Dr. Na’im Akbar is a clinical psychologist, educator and author. Essence Magazine proclaimed him as one of the world's preeminent psychologists and a pioneer in the development of an African-centered approach to modern psychology. His work centers around the idea that African Americans still carry many of the scars from slavery and oppression that lead to psychological struggles assoiated with that trauma.
Questions to Consider: What is self-knowledge? How did systemic and structural racism and oppression cause trauma? How does the lack of knowledge of self present itself? What resonates most with you? Who else will you share this with?
