This is the most wonderful time of the year! It’s the winter solstice, The winter solstice, also known as the hibernal solstice, occurs when either pole of the Earth reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This occurrence happens twice a year actually, once in each hemisphere Northern and again in the Southern Hemisphere. The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year in that hemisphere, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. Around the winter solstice, either pole experiences continuous darkness or twilight.
