Two marine searches are underway after a man fishing off Green Head, north of Jurien Bay, failed to return to shore and a crew member from a Chinese bulk carrier went missing off the Geraldton coast.

Police were advised of both missing men in the Mid West Gascoyne Region within 20 minutes of each other overnight.

The first report, made about 6.20pm, advised that a 46-year-old man who’d gone fishing off Green Head on Sunday had failed to return to shore despite usually returning at 4pm.

A land and sea search launched in response to his disappearance on Sunday afternoon failed to locate the man.

State Emergency Services volunteers will also begin combing the shore for signs of the man, whose vehicle and boat trailer are still at the local Green Head boat ramp.

About 20 minutes after he was reported missing, police were advised a crew member from a Chinese bulk carrier anchored approximately 11.5kms off the coast of Geraldton was missing — possibly after going overboard.

The man is a Chinese national aged in his 30s.

The West's Sarah Steger has the details.
