I met Mathew a few months ago and we became fast friends over our mutual love of music. Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Mathew's musical journey began as a child when he became infatuated with the sound and mechanics of music and the musical instruments themselves. Into his teen years and adulthood, he began to focus attention towards acoustic guitar and the flamenco, blues, and country genres. In this podcast, we discuss the impact that music has had on his life and his adventures as a musician.
After the podcast, Mathew performed an acoustic guitar session that you can view on Instagram and YouTube @themysteriapodcast

Today's podcast is with my MMA instructor, Coach Sal. Sal owns and operates Clinch MMA in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. We discuss a wide range of topics centred around how the skills and attributes one learns from training combat sports can be utilized to live a rewarding and fulfilling life. He sets the standard everyday and relentlessly pursues excellence for himself and his students.
Coach Sal, a Vancouverite, started training in Karate at the age of 7. By the time he was sixteen years of age, Sal had earned a second-degree black belt in Tae Know Do under the then master, Sun S Choi, and was competing in local tournaments. Sal moved forward in martial arts, adding MMA to his journey and earning a Sports Science diploma from Douglas College.
Sal didn't stop there and added Muay Thai to his training, where he had various coaches on the lower mainland before taking his first trip to Thailand to continue his studies in Muay Thai. Once there, he instantly fell in love with the culture and the sport, returning several times to train at the famous Sangmorakot gym under legendary promoter Jar Tui where he won a stadium title.
In the early 2000s, Sal started competing in Amateur Kickboxing, MMA, and Pankration.
He earned his way to the level of professional title. He continued to compete in MMA, kickboxing, and Muay Thai before retiring from competition in 2010.
Sal opened Clinch MMA Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, in 2008. His studio offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Clinch MMA incorporates conditioning, submission, fighting, combat training, grappling techniques, judo throws, boxing, and self-defence into all of its classes.

Today we welcome back John Stryker Meyer. John is a veteran of the "Secret War' in Vietnam, having served as the One-Zero (team leader) for the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) team, ST Idaho. His job was running reconnaissance missions 'across the fence’ of South Vietnam into the North Vietnamese Army’s sanctuaries in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. The members of MACV-SOG wore sterile fatigues, with no dog tags, no form of identification, no photos of loved ones or any detailed information that would indicate they were American. The reason? Since this was a Secret War, the American government needed "plausible deniability” in the event that any soldiers were killed or captured by enemy communist forces.
He is the author of several books, On The Ground: The Secret War in Vietnam, Across The Fence: The Secret War in Vietnam, SOG Chronicles: Volume I. He has appeared on Jocko Podcast, episodes 180, 181, 182, 186, 247, 248, 258, 259.
John hosts the podcast, SOGCast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/sogcast-untold-stories-of-mac-v-sog/id1572904295

Jacob Turner is a lawyer and author based in the UK. He has acted for sovereign states such as Argentina, Greece, Russia and Iraq. Jacob holds law degrees from Oxford University, UK, and Harvard University, USA, and has lectured at universities including Oxford, Cambridge, and King's College London. He has previously worked as a speechwriter for a UN Ambassador and as a clerk to a UK Supreme Court Justice.
Jacob's book, 'Robot Rules: Regulating Artificial Intelligence', explains why AI is unique, what legal and ethical problems it could cause, and how we can address them. It argues that AI is unlike any other previous technology, owing to its ability to take decisions independently and unpredictably. This gives rise to three issues: responsibility--who is liable if AI causes harm; rights--the disputed moral and pragmatic grounds for granting AI legal personality; and the ethics surrounding the decision-making of AI. The book suggests that in order to address these questions we need to develop new institutions and regulations on a cross-industry and international level. Incorporating clear explanations of complex topics, Robot Rules will appeal to a multi-disciplinary audience, from those with an interest in law, politics and philosophy, to computer programming, engineering and neuroscience.

Tony has been attending concerts since he was a young kid in the 60's and has seen nearly all of the legends perform. In more recent years, my dad, Tony, and I have attended hundreds of concerts together at numerous venues throughout Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. This episode was recorded on Tony's front porch on a beautiful sunny summer evening where, coincidentally, we were fortunate enough to listen to an Elvis impersonator perform a few doors down. This added to the ambiance of a nostalgic musical journey about the bands that have profoundly impacted our lives.

Continuous learning is critical because it enables an individual to overcome the challenges of everyday life. Learning can occur in a number of ways: experience, observation, reading, schooling, etc. The MCDP 7 describes how to create an environment that promotes and encourages learning individually and collectively.
The methods an individual utilizes to learn is subjective. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the individual to determine how they can be the most effective learner, and to encourage their peers to do the same. Directly and indirectly we are leaders. Therefore, it is the individual's responsibility to set the example.
This is not necessarily a document about the Marines. This is a document about how to recognize and reach your potential as a learner and to succeed in life.

Dr. Julio Montaner is the Executive Director and Physician-in-Chief, BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS; Head, HIV/AIDS Program, St. Paul’s Hospital, Providence Health Care; UBC and St. Paul's Foundation Chair in AIDS Research and UBC-Killam Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. In 2014, Dr. Montaner was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contributions to the establishment of a global standard of care in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Julio Montaner is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a graduate of the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires (1973) and received his Medical Degree with Honors from the University of Buenos Aires (1979). In 1981, Dr. Montaner joined the University of British Columbia (UBC) at St. Paul’s Hospital (SPH) where he completed his training in Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine. While in training, he led several clinical studies that demonstrated the role of adjunctive corticosteroids in Pneumocystis-related respiratory failure in the setting of AIDS. In 1988, he became the Director of the AIDS Research Program and the Immunodeficiency Clinic at SPH/UBC.
In the mid 90’s, as the PI of the INCAS Trial, he played a key role in establishing the efficacy of NNRTI based highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which emerged as the new global Standard of Care at the 1996 Vancouver International AIDS Conference, of which he was a co-organizer. He then focused his attention to HAART access to hard to reach populations, including injection drug users, and the treatment of multiple drug resistant HIV infection with great success. Since the late 90’s he also pioneered the concept of Treatment as Prevention® (TasP®). He was the first to advocate for the expansion of HAART coverage to curb the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, in terms of decreasing progression to AIDS and death, as well as decreasing HIV transmission. Largely through his efforts, TasP® has now been implemented with great success in BC, and progressively embraced by UNAIDS, China, PEPfAR, the US Government, and France, among others. In 2013 TasP® was fully incorporated in the WHO Consolidated ARV Guidelines.
