This show is dedicated to discussing Jesus then and now. I'm Daniel. Welcome to the Never Ending Jesus Podcast.

Today, I want to discuss why I believe all Protestants, Catholics or rather, Christians should observe the Lenten season.

In Matthew 4, we find that Jesus went into the wilderness to fast and after 40 days he was tempted by the tempter. Jesus' response to all the temptations was scripture. "It is written" was how his response to each temptation began. He knew the scripture well and was able to bring it to mind as a defense against temptation.

The 40-day fast marches right up to the beginning of Jesus' Earthly ministry. The 40 day fast was a time of preparation for the work He had set before him. It was a time of getting himself focused on the task at hand. Lent, for the Christian, is a time of preparation of the heart to celebrate the risen Christ on Easter Sunday. By fasting, we are identifying with Christ as we prepare for good Friday, Easter Sunday, and all Holy Week. The heart of the Lenten season is to draw near to Christ with a renewed vigor in faith.

Ashes are found in the new testament, specifically in Matthew 11 and Luke 4. The ashes are a representation of our mortality and our sinfulness. The putting on of ashes is done in remembrance that our Earthly bodies are not eternal and that our sinfulness is ever before us. It is seen as an act of repentance. An outward sign of the sorrow felt in the soul by falling short of the glory of God. Ashes are put on to show that we are aware of our need for a savior. Our subsequent fasting during Lent is not to be portrayed outwardly, but to be done in secret, not boasting. This keeps with the command of Christ in Matthew 6.

To my Protestant brothers and sisters who believe that Lent is "too catholic", be reminded that it is NEVER bad to draw near to Christ. I know the season of lent has already begun, but I encourage you to join in. Join with sacrifice. Join with prayer. Join with scripture. Join in drawing near to Christ. Give special attention to your heart this season that your faith in Him may find a renewed strength. Our story does not end in sackcloth and ash. Easter is coming. He is risen. Let us celebrate together.

In this episode, co-host Christian Thrailkill and myself discuss the evolution of our thoughts on controversial song lyrics. Specifically on the idea of using terms to describe God that are not technically theologically accurate.

Our hope is that this episode would inspire you to think deeply about the songs you put before your congregation, take extra time to explain artistic license, and press into the Holy Spirit for guidance and clarity.

Blessings.

Integrity is something that matters to God. It is part of how He designed us to operate. All facets of life go better when we walk in and life with integrity. We cannot always get it right though. The encouraging piece is that God doesn't leave us for dead when we mess up. He lifts up and restores our souls.

Recently, I had a friend as me a question that has perplexed the minds of many. I’m going to do my best to answer the question in this episode which is likely to be a bit longer than what I have been putting out recently. I find this perplexing question to be one that deserves the time though because it touches on one of what I think is the biggest misconceptions of Christianity in the recent past.

I’ve learned over the last few weeks more and more that belonging to a local church is not an explicit command that is given in the scriptures but is rather an implicit fact of the behavior we are called to through explicit commands. In other words, belonging to a local church is extremely important in the life of a believer.

We live in the “do you” era. A time when individualism is the rampant god of the day.

We know that we are not as good as we tell ourselves and others. We spend days/weeks/months even years lying to ourselves about us.

The world does need the best you that you can offer. The best you is found in Christ.

I think many of us approach Jesus in much the same way. We can recount miracles that Jesus performed in the scriptures. We can call out some of the high points of his ministry. Born of a virgin. Lived a sinless life. Was crucified, dead and buried. On the 3rd day he rose again and later ascended into heaven.

Being able to recount all these things about Jesus does not make us followers of Jesus. Let us transform our knowledge into belief. Belief demands action. Belief demands response. Belief demands submission. Belief demands praise. Belief demands affection.

Prayer is an aspect of faith that I have found filled with mysticism from the very beginning. It is not something that has come naturally to me as reading the bible or other studies of theology. It is here that I have come to see the beauty that arises from the wonder of prayer.

We often times experience mountaintops and valleys in our faith. Being on the mountaintop is a great feeling, but walking through the valley is hard if you do not have a secure foundation on which to tread during difficult times.

Hebrews 6 is calling us to solidify our foundation in the Lord Jesus and move on to spiritual maturity.

This week, we continue our conversation on John the Baptist. Specifically how he approached doubt. The big idea being: Like John, when we are in our lowest moments and face doubts, we can take them to Jesus, who will respond to us in compassion.
