And so we have come to the longest Psalm. 176 verses! Now for those who may fear a 4 hour sermon-fear not! I’m only going to high light several verses so this will be what I call a kangaroo sermon as you will be hopping thru the text as we go along. We are able to do this b/c of the nature of this Psalm 119 and b/c it’s unlike the other Psalms. David Gusick puts it this way in his excellent commentary on Psalm 119:

The sections and verses are not like a chain, where one link is connected to the other, but like a string of pearls where each pearl has equal, but independent value.

This is how I will attempt to preach-unlike other Sundays where we move thru a passage verse after verse in order, today we will jump from one verse to the next. Most of the time there will be several verses between. I will try not to leave you behind! I’m doing this to put together the subpoint from the cluster of verses we read. This is often a style used with topical sermons-so hope this style isn’t too confusing! It’s just a method of moving thru a large text in a small amount of time.
