This is The Meaning Complex, a podcast where we talk about the most important and meaningful ideas in the world today. My intention is to be equal parts challenging and encouraging, to find out the purest form of the ideas we are wrestling with and, with that knowledge, discover what is true. I hope you'll join me on this journey.
A great conversation about modern masculinity and what happens when we have imbalance interpersonally and in the lives of our children. I hope you enjoy this conversation!

Expectations on modern men are confusing and often downright impossible.
While the media talks a lot about the necessary and meaningful push to empower women in the workplace, the role of men in positions of leadership has never been more unclear.
How do we create value and carve out a place where we feel fulfilled and valued?
Listen to this wonderful conversation between Charlie and Jon Westbrook, a soldier and father who has a lot to share about modern masculinity and how to lead from the front.

Diego is a good friend of mine and a truly inspirational teacher. More than any other teacher I know, he creates an opportunity for students to learn something that they can’t unlearn, a new way of seeing the world that gives them resources they didn’t have before. I would call that the essence of true learning, but as teachers we so often give in to the pressure of teaching in a standard style. This is a must listen for teachers who are inspired to help their students to really benefit from their education.

In today's episode I’m talking with my friend Roland about polyamory, a type of ethical non-monogamy. It’s a really interesting conversation and although I know that I am monogamous, I also know a lot of people who have felt a lack of freedom in traditional relationships. As we talk about in this podcast, what matters is treating the people in our lives with trust, respect and kindness.

In this episode I’m talking with Joseph, the man behind the YouTube channel What I’ve Learned. I knew about Joseph’s channel before I was introduced to him at a co-working space here in Tokyo a few years ago and we get into misconceptions about science, online harassment, finding the chores you like doing and the carnivore diet, to name just a few of the topics we touch on in this fascinating podcast.

This is one of the most controversial topics I could possibly cover. I’m going to be talking with my friend Marco about racism in America. Following the horrific murder of George Floyd under the knee of a policeman, and the protests that have swept the country, I’m left wondering how we can repair broken racial divides.
We talk about narratives, being open minded and looking for truth in muddy water.

Transgender issues are becoming much more of a political hot button in recent years. After seeing how a lot of activists behave in the media, I have been concerned with how the political discussion has overtaken the reality of what is actually going in the lives of trans people, especially when it comes to talking about so-called trans children. This discussion with my friend Xander really helped me to understand this topic more deeply, and I came away feeling like I can have so much more empathy for even the most extreme trans activists. Listen on and you’ll understand...

In this episode I’m speaking with my friend Nina Cataldo about the unique challenges of mixed race people in Japan, and how more and more Japan is opening up to the influences of other cultures while not giving up it’s traditions.

Carmen and I became fast friends after meeting during our CTI Co-Active training course in London in 2018. She has been a great friend, supported me through tough times and coached me when I needed someone to tell me to just go do it and be the best I can be. I'm really excited to introduce her as my first guest on the podcast so you can see some of that wisdom that she got, in part, from being "just a mom".
Find out more about Carmen's work at Aina Giving.
