About the episode:

Where not to go?

There are a lot of recommended "safe places" and tips on how to be safe when you are solo traveling. But where not to go?

To discuss this, I invited Sina the founder of @indicotravels. Sina has lived in a total of five countries in Europe and South America, she is a huge fan of diving into new cultures and connecting with locals, and she has traveled to nearly all continents by herself. During this episode, we talk about general tips and also what to look for in specific countries.

As we know solo female travel is often associated with unsafe situations. People perceive that women face increased risks of harassment, assault, and other forms of violence while traveling alone, but when we prepare, do the appropriate research, and follow some rules, we can minimize a lot of these risks.

About the episode:

Infidelity or that your marriage is about to end are the biggest things that people think of when you're in a relationship or married, and someone is solo traveling.

Does solo travel while married means that your marriage is on the rocks?

A lot of people have misconceptions about solo travel, one is that you cannot travel solo if you are in a relationship or married.

To discuss this topic I invited Lindsay from @onegirlwandering. During the episode, she shares her personal challenges and reasons why she travels solo despite of her relationship status.

"I want people to be able to see that this is something that is POSSIBLE, and YOU CAN DO IT.

There is a HEALTHY and RESPONSIBLE way of doing it."

• Solo traveling can provide an opportunity for self-reflection and growth.

It provides the chance for each partner to step away from their daily life and reflect on their own goals and aspirations.

• A great way to build self-esteem and confidence, which can ultimately benefit the relationship.

"Travel not to escape" is a mindset that emphasizes the idea of traveling for personal growth and self-discovery, rather than as a means of running away from problems or difficulties. It encourages us as solo female travelers to embrace the challenges and uncertainty of travel and to use the experience as an opportunity to learn and grow. By approaching travel with this mindset, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

To further discuss this topic, I have invited Geleen Antonio, who recently quit her corporate tech career to launch her solo travel empowerment business. Her mission is to help women not just to view solo travel as a form of escape, but to feel confident and empowered while doing it and to use the experience as a stepping stone to the next chapter of their lives. Her company, called 'Journey Card-Pick Your Path', offers a variety of resources including a course, a community, and guided journals.

Did you ever realize that traveling gets a little bit easier when you know a few words in the language of the country where you're going to? People tend to joke that if you can say, “Yes,” “No,” “Where’s the restroom?” and “I’ll have another beer, please,” then you’re set. While that statement can be almost true, there are a whole list of other useful phrases, words and conversations that can keep you safe, happy and a little less stressed when you’re on vacation, studying or working abroad.

Being an introvert and being a solo traveler are not mutually exclusive. There are ways and techniques introverts can use to help them get past their tendency to solitude so that solo travel can also be a social experience.

Solo travel may seem to be for those enormously confident extroverts who would naturally bound out into the world, but there are many, many solo travel introverts as well, like my friend Ro Battagliotti who I invited to share with us about her experience and how she has explored the world as an introvert after 10 years on the road.

Well, this is also a podcast for women and some of my listeners have become moms recently, and that doesn't have to mean that their travels will be on hold for the next 5, 10 or 18 years. Angie D'Errico is an Argentinian solo female traveler who has been on the road since 2012. Like many Westerners, Angie grew up with the idea that terrorism and Muslims meant the same, but in September of 2019, she decided to see how much truth there was in those headlines and, without much thought, bought a ticket to Iran.

Angie spent the next sixty-two days traveling through Iran and Kurdistan, but also exploring different aspects of a culture that was completely foreign to her. She had to cover her hair before even getting off the plane, was part of the most important celebration in Shia Islam and was the guest of honor at a Kurdish wedding.

Between spontaneous friendships, dinners spent sitting on rugs, forbidden dances, calls to prayer, and constant threats from the United States, Angie was able to meet the people behind the tabloid news. And then when an old man with tears in his eyes asked her to show the world that their country was not one of terrorists, Angie vowed to make it a personal mission. In this episode we discussed about this experience and much more...

There's no failure, only experience and each experience is like a colorful thread. Together, they weave the rich tapestry that becomes your life. It's about living boldly, deeply, and cultivating joy and beauty in our lives.”

In this episode, I share with you a speech I gave last year. There is a quote that says, “wherever you go, there you are.” We can’t escape our feelings. In fact, solo travel often confronts our emotions in ways we wouldn’t expect. But the woman I’ve become and the women I’ve interviewed have found meaning in traveling solo by embracing the ups and downs of the journey. If you’re feeling lonely -- embrace it -- you won’t feel like that forever. Go out and try a new thing and make it worth it. But don’t avoid the emotion, go through it, sit down and write about it. I learned it wasn’t about what I did or what I was going to do. It was just being okay with where I was at, enjoying the present moment, that brought me peace of mind.

With little else to go on, most people naturally have a negative impression of Africa.

According to Jade solo female travel in Africa is just like anywhere else. You have to keep yourself safe and get into the right mindset as you would do in any other continent. “There are three kinds of people in the world today,”

“There are ‘well poisoners,’ who discourage you and stomp on your creativity and tell you what you can’t do. There are ‘lawn mowers’ – people who are well- intentioned but self-absorbed; they tend to their own needs, mow their own lawns and never leave their yards to help another person. Finally, there are ‘life enrichers’ – people who reach out to enrich the lives of others, to lift them up and inspire them. We need to be life enrichers, and we need to surround ourselves with life enrichers.”
