September 1 - Exodus 12: 29-32

At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in the land ofEgypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to thefirstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of thelivestock. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all hisservants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, forthere was not a house where someone was not dead. Then he summonedMoses and Aaron by night and said, “Up, go out from among my people, bothyou and the people of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as you havesaid. Take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and begone, and bless me also!”

I can not fathom the horror of this event that took place at midnight in thesescriptures at God’s hand. As we reflecton these verses, we can take joy and comfort in the fact that God’s promisesare true and unfailing. Yet what a pricePharaoh and the Egyptians paid for Pharaoh’s selfishness, pride and brutalityover the people of Israel.
