Today on The Leaders' Brief -

  • Amidst concerns and criticism by opposition leaders and a section of the American business community, the Biden administration's ambitious $1.9 trillion COVID stimulus bill was successfully passed in the Senate this week. While economists agree that the US requires a major economic package to kickstart its economy and have welcomed the Act's passage, inflation concerns arising out of the relief package have increased. A group of analysts has termed the Biden plan "a very risky move" that could slow down growth by starving the administration of capital.
  • Senegalese opposition MP Ousmane Sonko, detained on rape charges and later released on bail as the country flared up in violent protests, has balmed President Macky Sall for his arrest after denying the accusations. Opposition leaders in Senegal are concerned that President Sall, elected to power for a second term with an overwhelming 58% vote share in 2019, will exercise his authority to remain in power for a third term in 2024. A large section of the country's youth have decided to side with the 46-year old MP's version of events, and the ongoing protests have taken a larger range of issues under its umbrella.
  • Mexico has come one step closer to becoming the world's largest legal Cannabis market. Mexico's Congress is expected to pass a federal law legalising the cannabis trade in the country. The bill, passed by the Senate in November 2020, saw several revisions in the last two months and was approved by two special committees of Mexico's Lower House of Congress on Monday. The Bill also makes way for the creation of a license category for vertically integrated marijuana businesses.
