• Britain, the worst hit European nation in terms of COVID numbers and death, become the first western country to administer vaccines manufactured by American and German firms Pfizer and BioNTech this week. The country’s economy was predicted to shrink by 11% next year. In such a time, the government’s decision to ship in 40 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine – enough to vaccinate 20 million people or about 30% of its population- is by far the best Christmas gift the country could have hoped for.
• The Kremlin became the first in the world to start a mass vaccination programme in Moscow, last week. Russian media reported that the Sputnik V vaccine will be distributed at 70 clinics around Moscow, and it has been made available first to frontline workers, including medical staff, teachers and social workers.
• The Trump administration is pushing hard to end a 2017 rift between Qatar and a Saudi Arabia led quartet, which includes Bahrain, Egypt, and the UAE. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt had, in 2017, imposed a boycott on Qatar, severing diplomatic and transport ties, and accusing the country of supporting terrorism through its ties with Iran - an allegation that Qatar denies.
