In this episode, Jesus brings on Chris Roche who is the CEO and Founder of Catalyst Consulting - a revenue and pipeline growth-focused marketing agency.

Roche began his entrepreneurial journey after college, launching a SaaS company to help facilitate the research and communication from high school athletes to college coaches/recruiters. Roche founded Catalyst 12 months ago with the simple goal of taking his unique sales/marketing skill set and working with a small group of B2B SaaS companies.

Almost every marketer we have interviewed on the show has told us LinkedIn is the best B2B social media platform for inbound leads. It's so true and we are seeing it with JRM Web Marketing. Have you ever had a great marketing idea or strategy and proposed it to your CEO but he or she didn't understand it? This happens a lot with marketers. What we tend to do is get critical and frustrated with our CEO who doesn't "get" marketing. It's easier to point the finger at why things aren't going well in marketing. It's difficult to look inward and be self-aware of the fears and insecurities that we may bring into that meeting with our CEO. Sometimes, we just flat out are not good at selling our idea and we need to learn how to be better salespeople in order to present (sell) our ideas and strategies to our CEO effectively.

In this episode, Jesus McDonald brings on Carl Ferreira, who is the Director of Sales at Refine Labs, formally Team Lead and Senior Account Executive at HubSpot. They discuss how to approach your CEO, the things your CEO cares about, how to sell to your CEO, and how to buy software from an experienced salesperson.

As B2B marketers, we are always thinking about the next steps in our careers, like how do we climb the corporate ladder? Is this the right company to work for? How do we deal with disadvantages in the workplace? What's the difference between Director of Marketing and VP of Marketing? And many other thoughts that come to our mind. We sometimes need perspective to help direct our path forward. Wendy Perilli joins the show to discuss her experience with these topics.

Wendy is currently the VP of Marketing at PeerSpot. She is a Silicon Valley marketing leader that has over 20 years of experience that spans companies such as ServiceNow, VMware, Github, and Druva, along with many startups. Many B2B marketers post on social media about needing to have a business narrative that drives content marketing, about needing deep customer insights and analytics, or about needing a solid strategy and good tactics. It's the same content you see on social media over and over again. It gets boring and stale. Nobody is talking about what those deep insights are. Nobody is talking about how you should think about customer insights and analytics. That's why Sam Kuehnle joins the podcast to discuss this topic. Sam is a VP of Demand Generation at Refine Labs where they are on a mission to help B2B companies dominate categories and unlock growth through a combination of marketing strategy, research, and specialized execution.

It's difficult to know how sales and marketing should work together.

As a B2B marketer, you want to make sure you aren't just an order taker at the end of the day.

In this episode, Jesus interviews Nick Bennett who is the Director of Field, Community, and Partner Marketing at Alyce.

Nick shares how marketing and sales should be under one true revenue team starting with the CRO.

Marketing, Sales, and CS should all be under one revenue team.

Everyone should be responsible for the same number at the end of the day. It's not siloed.

Everyone should have the same goal that they're aiming for.

You also want to add value to sales while building the relationship.

When it comes to B2B websites, it is difficult to know what a winning website should look like, when to outsource website development (domestically), and what the critical things are that we should be watching out for.

Two scenarios in which it makes sense to outsource your website development to a website partner:

Scenario 1 - You don't have an in-house developer, your website is breaking, outdated, and you need to move fast with your marketing.

Scenario 2 - You have an in-house developer or two but they are overwhelmed with projects and tasks. You can hire a website partner to handle the overflow in order to meet your deadlines.

In this episode, Jesus McDonald was a guest on The Marketing Meeting podcast. Jesus shares not only about B2B website development but also about LinkedIn and podcasting tips.

In this podcast interview, I talk with Linda Melone, who is a B2B conversion copywriter and the founder of The Copy Worx.

Linda breaks down her process:

  1. Research. This is the biggest part of preparing to write. From websites to customer reviews. This also includes interviewing people to dig in order to get to the root.

  2. Writing & Editing. More like assembly because there are blocks of all these different pieces of research and she starts plugging them in and putting them together.

  3. Testing & Validation. Put it out there to see how people respond. The whole idea is to get a measurable result.

Linda also mentioned in the interview a noticeable issue that she sees with websites which is that people don't know their own value, like value proposition. What is it that separates you from everybody else?

This short clip is part of a podcast interview that I did with Camille Trent, who is now Head of Content at Dooly.

Camille shares her advice and tips:

  • It all starts with good communication

  • Then level up by adding personality

The problem people make is trying to overcomplicate content.

Just simplify it.

What point are you trying to get across? What's the value? What do people actually care about? How can you make people feel it?

Don't try to get clever with your copywriting. 😉

If you're a marketing professional and your CEO is...

  • Resistant to new marketing strategies

  • Caring more about the sales team

  • Transactional and not relational

  • Not seeing value in marketing and your work

  • Always thinking about the cheapest solutions

Then go find a new job. Life is too short.

The future belongs to those who are investing in their online presence.

If you stay, your marketing results will stink and you will have little to no growth.

If they are not investing in marketing then they are not investing in you.

When a lead fills out your website form, have the lead book a time directly from the sales rep's calendar (via Calendly or HubSpot) as part of the form submission.

I'm seeing a few B2B companies doing this and I think it's genius.

It's not forcing the lead and here's why:

  1. They have pricing on their website so the lead knows the starting price

  2. Their website forms are somewhat lengthy so only serious inquiries fill it out

  3. Next is booking a date and time with a sales rep. The lead is more than likely to do it because they need the service

Something to definitely consider.

I don't remember the last time I checked my podcast analytics. 😳

For me, it's a personal branding approach, a top-of-mind strategy, and a form of business networking.

Without a podcast, I wouldn't have the LinkedIn and YouTube content that I have today. 🤯

Without a podcast, I wouldn't have the inbounds leads and customers that I have today.

Instead of focusing on podcast analytics, focus on creating valuable content for your audience consistently.

This is the way I see it:

If you're focusing on podcast analytics to determine the success of your podcast then yeah you're going to burn out.

It takes time to build something amazing.

Be patient and keep creating. 💪

Facebook groups are good for starting a paid private online community on a low budget. They have the platform already built for you to meet your basic needs.

But if you want to take your paid private online community to the next level and you have the budget, then I recommend the following:

WordPress + BuddyBoss

And here’s why:

You control the environment 100%

What does that mean?

That means no ads that will distract your community.

Facebook has so many ads on its platform.

The fewer distractions the better for your community.

This alone will help your community to focus and drive more revenue.

You also control the user experience from start to finish. It’s 100% customizable to meet your needs/wants.

No more social media algorithms controlling your posts.

There are so many benefits to having your own platform.

It takes time and money, but it’s definitely a great investment if you’re serious about building a solid online community.

They do no spend behind all their marketing initiatives. 🤯

It's 100% inbound leads.

All of their closed business comes from inbound.

Angelica does more of the strategy like:

  • Determining what type of content goes on the podcast

  • What guests come on to the show

  • What topics to talk about

  • Copywriting and figuring out the podcast titles and descriptions

  • And more

Angelica also manages the company page on LinkedIn: Refine Labs

She has done a phenomenal job taking the company page from 1k to 11k followers. 👏

When it comes to podcasting, they use Hatch for podcast editing. (which I'm now looking into lol)

All their podcast appearances come 100% inbound because they built a solid brand. (the power of brand)

Web design is queen.

All the bells and whistles help a website get to the next level but without the right content, it goes nowhere.

Google knows this so it uses that to rank your site.

Invest in a copywriter. Or two. :)

Hey guys! I recorded this podcast episode in my car. Improving your website performance is not a one-time project. 🤯

Speed and user experience have been a huge focus for our clients this year.

Why? Because Google really cares about this.

Here's how to improve your website performance:

  1. Go to Google Lighthouse so they can measure your website

  2. Add your website URL and run your audit

  3. Google Lighthouse will generate a report for you

  4. Send that report to your website partner or web developer

And by the way, if you really care about improving your speed and user experience then understand that this is not a one-time project.

Ask your website partner or web developer about their ongoing maintenance plans that are focused on improving your website performance (via Google Lighthouse).

I recommend a monthly maintenance plan so you get the best website performance for Google and your website visitors.

This was a great podcast interview with my fellow digital marketer, Terry Rice.

The problem that we have sometimes is we'll treat a symptom of a problem.

And maybe that is your marketing, but the root cause might be something else.

And if we only treat the root cause we are still going to have problems down the road.

Great words from Terry.

Terry is a Business Development Consultant and Staff Writer at Entrepreneur magazine.

He focuses on helping professional service providers build their brand and revenue. Terry is also an Adjunct Instructor at NYU where he leads workshops for career-driven individuals.

It's so easy to get discouraged and quit when you're posting on social media and not getting any engagement or leads.

I can totally relate.

But here's the thing... Eventually, you will quit because you're not getting any results (ROI). It's important to change our thinking on this. The same thing applies to a podcast show. You don't just quit your podcast show because you're not getting X amount of downloads or X amount of subscribers or X amount of clients. That's the wrong focus and motive.

It's a timing thing with your audience.

It's a top-of-mind strategy.

The more you post on social media the more you show up in their feed.

I've had multiple people tell me that they loved my recent podcast episode, my YouTube videos, or my LinkedIn post without ever engaging with it.

A lot of people are eyeballing your content and digesting it. Look at how many people viewed your posts.

They might not click on that LIKE button but they definitely LIKE it. :)

I was recently in a Zoom meeting with a prospect and he mentioned seeing all my stuff on LinkedIn and then told me, "I feel like I already know you." (and this is the first time I met him)

That's being top of mind and people will turn to you when that need is there but focus more on providing quality content to your audience.

Try posting daily or weekdays only. Post valuable, insightful, and inspirational content. Humans want this.

Post on your personal profile and not the company page.

Your profile will get you way better results than the company page because humans want to learn and do business with humans.

Do it for a year and I promise you will get results. Heck, do it for 6 months and you'll still see results. Also, start incorporating video. Humans want to see humans and relate to them.

Be patient. It takes time.

Hope this brings you value. Make it a great day!

  1. Hashtags work. 1-3 hashtags are the sweet spot. Don’t go over 3 hashtags. This isn’t Instagram.

  2. The time you publish matters. 8am seems to be the best time to publish.

  3. Text-only and video posts work best. Though I will say that I'm seeing LinkedIn Polls getting more popular these past few weeks.

  4. The type of posts that are getting the most engagement is either insightful, inspirational, or valuable.

  5. Don’t add links to your posts. LinkedIn hates this so instead add links to the comment section.

  6. Emojis help with engagement... so let me add one now. 😁

  7. When you scroll through your feed and you really love something that someone posted, don’t click on that SHARE button. LinkedIn kills the reach. Instead, LIKE and COMMENT on the content you want to support.

  8. Be authentic. You're a human and you're providing content to humans.

What else would you add to this list?

P.S. I’m currently experimenting with video captions by uploading the captions directly to LinkedIn. I’ll let you know how it goes in a few weeks. This podcast episode was created while I was driving to the dentist.

Not just B2B marketers but ALL marketers should consider doing a website audit before making a handful of changes to the site or doing a redesign.

Sam Moss does a great job talking about website audits:

It's more of a conversion audit, more or less, which means...

  1. We go over the content of the website

  2. The flow/structure

  3. The design

  4. The customer experience that they're going to go through

  5. Then we give feedback to the company or the marketing team on what can be improved

Basically, we provide this to give a second pair of eyes for your marketing team or for your company. That second pair of eyes that can say, yes, you're either doing it right, or here are some key areas that you can improve.

It's tough for you to see what customers are experiencing.

We give some corrective criticism, we record the call and then we shoot it over to them.

P.S. When it comes to website audits, Sam’s recommendations are on point. And he won’t promote this but I will (LOL), check out his new website. He just went through a website redesign and it looks amazing. I’m personally using his website as inspiration for my prospective clients.

Here's why I LOVE working with B2B marketing professionals:

  1. I myself am a marketing professional

  2. There's a natural vibe because we both get marketing

  3. We're always sharing our thoughts and ideas to help one another

The other day my client said that he loved that I was doing an audio and video experience when it came to podcasting because it provided my audience with more options to consume my content. They just launched their podcast and they wanted to imitate my strategy.

Here's what I literally told my client:

Start a YouTube channel so you can start uploading videos. (They loved the idea.)

Your YouTube channel is for SEO purposes, not for subscribers.

Since you're already publishing short clips of your podcast episodes on LinkedIn, you might as well upload the short clips and full episodes on YouTube. Sure, it's one extra step, but totally worth it.

Google owns YouTube and the captions help tremendously for your SEO strategy. So why not?

So I told him, "go to my YouTube channel, search Jesus McDonald, and go to any of my videos and go to the description area. Copy, paste, and personalize that sucker for yourself."

It's a beautiful thing that we get to learn and grow together.

Hey guys. So I ran 2.7 miles in 30 minutes.

To give you guys some context:

I'm on this daily challenge, I challenged myself to do 30 minutes of any type of physical activity. Could be walking. It could be jogging. It could be running, weightlifting, a HIIT workout, yoga, CrossFit. I mean, you name it.

My daily challenge is to do it nonstop for 30 minutes. And dang, that's hard. Today I chose jogging for 30 minutes and here's the thing...

It doesn't matter how far I go.

It doesn't matter how slow I am.

What matters to me is doing it nonstop and spending quality time in those 30 minutes.

This also applies to marketing. Putting in 30 minutes a day into learning a software, being better at copywriting, reading a book, listening to a podcast, you name it. Challenge yourself.

Quality time is valuable and it's worth it.

The more you do it, the better you’ll get at it.

A common question I get asked: Should I keep everything in HubSpot or move everything to WordPress?

Here’s my answer to this question:

  • I recommend keeping everything in one environment: WordPress.

  • We keep a copy on the WordPress database for all the forms collected on the website

  • Blogs can easily be exported to WordPress

We can use the forms from HubSpot and just migrate the blogs to WordPress along with the new website design.

WordPress was originally made for blogs, so that's what they do best. At least, migrating the blogs will be a good idea. If it was me, I would keep it all under one umbrella.

Why?

Google recommended page load time is under two seconds.

At Google, they aim for under a half-second. Fast matters. The customer experience matters.

For that reason, the less third-party software your site relies on the better your website performance will be. Page load time will be faster if everything was kept under one umbrella like WordPress.

Fewer connections, less back and forth, faster delivery.

Google is putting a strong emphasis on page speed and user experience.

Page speed is also important to the user experience.

Longer load times have also been shown to negatively affect conversions.

This is part 2 of "Here Is Why I Choose WordPress Over Webflow". If you haven't listened to part 1 yet, we encourage you to go back a few episodes to listen to it because this podcast episode picks up from where we left off on part 1.

Here are Jesus' thoughts on this matter:

WordPress is superior when it comes to scalability and performance. Using open-source software has many more benefits than using a proprietary application. 💪

In terms of capabilities, any website built by Webflow can be built with WordPress but not every website built by WordPress can be built by Webflow. This makes WordPress a better solution if a website is complex/medium size or has the potential to scale.

As a WordPress website development agency, we have a system in place, premium plugins, and a modern website builder (no bloating, clean code) that helps us to clone, maintain or build a website easily. In Webflow you start over on every project. That means more development time on something that should be simple.

Using WordPress, there are no limitations on the number of leads you can get. In Webflow, they limit you and you have to pay extra for additional traffic or space for additional content. Development and maintenance costs will add up quickly. 💲

Jesus McDonald has been getting a handful of questions from B2B marketing professionals about why he chooses WordPress over Webflow and what does he think about the two platforms and which one is better.

Here are Jesus' thoughts on this matter:

I think it's unfair to compare the two platforms because it really depends on what you are building.

Webflow is a site builder but is more limited in content management. When built right, WordPress has the scalability, security, and performance that makes it the most popular CMS in the world.

To me, Webflow is a great platform for small businesses that only need a few pages and not much traffic.

I've been seeing that Webflow is being called the alternative to WordPress which is not true. It's all marketing and a way to hook you. If that statement was true then Webflow wouldn't offer a plugin to integrate with WordPress. 🤔

Now don't get me wrong, Webflow is beautiful. What you see is what you get. They are not a CMS platform but instead a website builder. So the real comparison is Webflow vs Elementor or Webflow vs Oxygen. That's the real comparison. 😏

In my opinion, WordPress + Oxygen wins.

In this podcast episode, Jesus McDonald shares why every marketing professional needs a website designer and developer on their team.

It's so easy to use the templates that HubSpot or Marketo provides you with but it gets old, boring, and your audience gets tired of engaging with your content. Jesus McDonald never planned to eat at McDonald's… 😳

When scheduling a work meeting, the individual proposed McDonald's.

Jesus could have said no, but he's been hearing a lot of good things about their food and especially about their coffee, so he was curious about the hype.

As Jesus was driving to McDonald's, he thought to himself, "wow I'm going to McDonald's all because of word of mouth marketing."

That's the power of marketing.

Kudos to McDonald's for doing a phenomenal job with their marketing efforts. 🍔 🍟

Like many others, they have had to continually pivot to stay relevant.

Q&A: How Often Should You Update Your Business Website?

Jesus McDonald recommends a website update (redesign) every 1-4 years. Many businesses in Silicon Valley are redesigning their websites every 2-3 years to keep their branding updated and their audience engaged.

Most people do a lot of research on a business before choosing a product or service. The website is part of that research and so becomes an essential part of the decision making process.

Some businesses can't afford a redesign right now while other businesses are holding onto cash due to all the current uncertainty, but if you have the budget, Jesus McDonald highly recommends you redesign your website today to stay relevant, increase traffic, and improve sales. Seize the moment this fall while there is greater opportunity in the market, then you'll be ready for a strong start to 2021.
