Introducing the Wildash project, where every room tells a unique story yet shares a common thread of balance between existing architecture and carefully integrated new elements.
The Wildash office is a testament to this approach, with the timber stud panel serving as both a functional "blind" and a striking design element. The deliberate decision to work around the fixed window, allowing it to slide open for natural light, showcases the studio's dedication to preserving what was existing while enhancing it with thoughtful design. In the bathroom, the use of Patagonia stone is not only an aesthetic choice but also a nod to practicality, as natural stone helps regulate humidity levels. This serene haven is a result of working with the natural finishes and soothing vibes, creating a space that encourages relaxation and tranquility. Moving to the formal lounge, the inspiration drawn from an underground jazz bar is evident in the rich hues of dark green and warm orange. This room is designed for intimate gatherings, balancing comfort with upscale sophistication.

Beachman: From Dream to RealityOn this TALKdesign Episode, Ben Taylor and Steve Payne from Beachman share their inspiring entrepreneurial journey. Founded in 2016, Beachman Life began with Ben's vision for retro-inspired products. In 2019, he joined forces with Steve, a motorcycle mechanic, to create electric mopeds that combine accessibility with modern appeal. The idea was inspired by vintage designs and a passion for stylish, high-quality bikes. Ben's marketing and design expertise, coupled with Steve's technical skills, led to the creation of Beachman's first production bikes.
They quickly moved from concept to prototype, showcasing their shared willingness to take risks. Steve built the initial prototype from a Kawasaki frame, and they collaborated with a factory in China to refine the design. Despite challenges like design theft, they focused on innovation and rapid production. Their initial risk, funded by Steve’s home mortgage line of credit, paid off when they quickly sold their first 30 bikes, leading to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.
Beachman faced significant challenges, such as supply chain disruptions, but persevered, expanding into a larger warehouse. Their commitment to authenticity and brand values remains steadfast, ensuring each new product aligns with their vision of a life well lived. Future plans include expanding into North America and Europe, and developing unique lifestyle accessories and electric car conversions, all while maintaining their core ethos.

Founding partners Bang Dang and Rizi Faruqui have both called Dallas, Texas home from an early age, and with diverse backgrounds bring a unique, Eastern/Western take on architecture. A native of Austin, Matt Fajkus holds a Master in Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he completed his thesis work with Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo. Before going independent in 2010 and establishing MF Architecture, Fajkus achieved significant experience in architectural practice. While working for the world-renowned firm Foster + Partners in London for several years, he worked on the design of numerous high-profile, international large-scale projects. Starting at firms in 1998, he also worked on numerous small-scale award-winning projects while with Max Levy Architects in Dallas, Brinkley Sargent Architects, and Julie Snow Architects in Minneapolis. In 2012, Fajkus was awarded two AIA National Emerging Professional Awards.
In addition to leading MF Architecture, Fajkus is a Tenured Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, where he teaches courses in design, technology, daylighting and integrated sustainability. He was awarded the 2022-2023 Faculty Award for Outstanding Studio Teaching in addition to being recognized with the University of Texas System Regents' 2013 Outstanding Teaching Award - the highest teaching honor awarded by the entire school system. Additionally in 2013, Fajkus was presented with the Faculty Scholarship Award for Innovative Practice, and the ACSA/AIAS National New Faculty Teaching Award. He has co-authored a book titled Architectural Science and the Sun[More info here], published by Routledge Publishers.
Fajkus is a LEED Accredited Professional, a licensed architect, and a registered interior designer in the State of Texas. Fajkus was named the winner of the Engineering, Architecture and Design category at the 17th Austin Under 40 Award in 2015, and the winner of AIA Austin's Emerging Professional Achievement Honor Award in 2017.

Aaron Prinz is the host of the Design:ED Podcast and holds a Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He was born and raised in the rural Northern California town of Red Bluff, just two hours south of the Oregon border. After one year of college, Prinz relocated to San Francisco to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. At age 26, he began studying architecture at Portland State University while interning at Studio Petretti Architecture led by Amanda Petretti. His professional contributions while at Studio Petretti were focused on a portion of the new Multnomah County Courthouse which is a prominent addition to the Portland skyline. He currently resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Roxanne where he continues to work as a designer.

Lawrence W. Speck is Senior Design Principal for the large (1400 person) architectural firm, Page, with offices in eighteen cities across the U.S. He is also a well-known design educator having been a faculty member in schools of architecture at M.I.T, University of Western Australia and University of Texas at Austin for many years. He served as Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin from 1992-2001.
Speck has helped lead six major master planning projects for his home city, Austin, including master plans for a seven-mile stretch of the Colorado River as it moves through downtown, for a 40-block area around the Texas State Capital, and for the new Dell Medical School campus at UT Austin. He has also been the lead architect for two major park projects in downtown Houston—Discovery Green and Buffalo Bayou Park. In addition to designing many urban commercial buildings, Speck has been the lead designer for Austin Bergstrom International Airport Terminal (3 phases), Austin Convention Center (2 phases), and academic buildings on six university campuses.
His work has been profiled in such popular publications as The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Business Week; in American architectural publications such as Architectural Record, Architecture, Architectural Digest, Architect, Interior Design, Contract, and Progressive Architecture; and in international architectural journals such as The Architectural Review (England), OFX (Italy), Design Community (China), Baumeister (Germany), Projeto (Brazil), Tasarim (Turkey), Ottagano (Italy), Nikkei Construction (Japan) and Architectural Design (England).
In the last 25 years, Speck’s design work has won over 120 design awards—30+ from the AIA. As an educator, he has received over 40 teaching and service awards including the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion. He is a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects and served as chair of the jury to select fellows in 2005.

Nicole Blair's "The Perch" showcases innovative design solutions, addressing the clients' need for extra space without sacrificing their beloved backyard. Elevated above the bungalow, it harmoniously blends with a corrugated oxidized steel cladding, matching the existing fence. Within limited square footage, Blair crafted functional and intimate spaces. A cleverly designed hallway nook opens up the interior, bridging the first and second floors seamlessly. The interior palette, featuring whitewashed pine and a transparent steel staircase inspired by Japanese design, enhances both aesthetics and functionality.
In a nod to continuity, Blair borrowed the concept of bent rebar from the client's backyard, artfully integrating it with other bent elements, including the siding. Concerns about light blockage were dispelled with the addition of paw-friendly expanded metal on the staircase treads, allowing ample light to cascade through. The interior's warm tones, subtly infused with pinks and peaches, create a harmonious color scheme. This palette complements copper fixtures, oxidized steel, and whitewashed pine, lending the space a cohesive and inviting ambiance. Blair's design journey delves into various aspects, such as the interplay of natural light, seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, and unique bathroom features, like stucco walls and a bespoke mirror.

Most of Dulcie's experience on large upscale projects came from Ms. Horwitz’s employment in one of the premiere architectural firms in San Francisco, Holt Hinshaw Architects, where she quickly worked her way up to the head of the residential division within 2 years. She created Horwitz A+D in 2001 and has been designing for exclusive clients in Southern California since 2003. 60–70% of the work they do is residential and the rest is commercial, namely retail or restaurant endeavors—as these are the types of projects where our expertise comes in most handy. We are known for the emotional and aesthetic impact of our built environments—which we consider vital to the success of any project.

Peggy Deamer is Professor Emerita of Yale University’s School of Architecture and principal in the firm Deamer, Studio. She is a founding member of the Architecture Lobby, a group advocating for the value of architectural design and labor. She is the editor of Architecture and Capitalism: 1845 to the Present and The Architect as Worker: Immaterial Labor, the Creative Class, and the Politics of Design and the author of Architecture and Labor. Tokyo-based Mark Dytham is co-founder of multidisciplinary architecture studio Klein Dytham Architecture.
Royal College of Art graduate Mark Dytham moved to Tokyo in 1989 to join architecture studio Toyo Ito. He formed Klein Dytham with partner Astrid Klein two years later. The award-winning studio has created architecture, events, furniture, installation and interior projects including Open House in Bangkok, Ginza Place, and T-Site Tsutaya bookstore.
In 2013, Klein and Dytham launched Pecha Kucha, an event for young designers in Tokyo to meet and share work. The programme has now expanded to over 1000 cities worldwide, creating an international network for designers.
Dytham has spoken at multiple international design events and teaches at universities in Japan and worldwide.

Kurt Krueger, AIA, ArCH, LEED AP was educated in the practice of architecture and design at Kansas State University. With an entrepreneurial spirit and an approach of learning by doing, he formally interned for the well-known firm of Frank Harmon Architect in Raleigh, North Carolina during his last year of school. After graduation, Kurt worked for the award-winning Rockhill and Associates Firm in Lawrence, Kansas. Here, Kurt was a key member of the team and contributed to building several houses in Kansas City and Arkansas–hammer and all.

Jennifer Briggs is executive vice president/chief executive officer of the Texas Society of Architects. Key point: Are you getting paid for pre-design research? With the Low Commitment Consultation, you can systematically win clients before they hire an architect (eliminating all possible competition).
Real World Example: Graham Irwin is the Principal of Essential Habitat Architecture based in California.

‘Just had the 2nd client sign up for an LCC, aka “Project Planning Service.” Frankly, he seemed like he might be cheap, though he and his wife do want to do a renovation badly, so I was expecting he’d be scared off.
‘Instead, he got back to me and asked about the difference in the tiers of service. I really enjoyed being able to explain that they were intended to allow people who want to do more legwork to save some money or people who don’t have the time or inclination to have much of the work done for them.
‘A few days later, he’s in.’
Benefits of the LCC: When you win an LCC client, which should be easier than winning a design client (because the commitment is infinitely smaller), they are five times more likely to make a second purchase of your design services than a non-client.

Richard Dudzicki is the founder and director of RDA Architects Ltd.
Starting with a team of just 3 people and £2,000 funding from The Prince's Trust, RDA now employs a team of 10-15 people and is now turning over more than £1,000,000. The practice works on projects worth around £20 million. RDA are purveyors of BIM and are exploring the use of virtual reality in the Architectural Profession. The practice has a commitment to working with new technologies, off-site construction, and Passivhaus design. At least 20% of the time is spent working with R&D in the industry exploring new sustainable ideas. To date, RDA has built eight certified Passivhaus’s and are striving to meet London’s 2050 Net Zero commitment. As “ LETI Pioneers” Richard and his team are experts in this field.
Richard comes from a second-generation immigrant Polish-speaking family, born in London. He has travelled extensively in search of his family’s epic refugee and
2nd world war tale.
His undergraduate Architecture degree was gained in Liverpool, whilst gaining a distinction for his post-graduate qualification in London using Film as a base
for studying Architecture. He has been a lecturer for some ten years at Chelsea College of Art, Greenwich and Southbank University. He has had a column in Building Design, written in other publications and appeared on the BBC.
He has worked in Hong Kong and Mumbai as an Architect. Though the longing of his motorcycle explorations beckoned for him to carry on exploring the world on two wheels. From Nepal to India to the States on a Harley. He still prefers two wheels to four, though now cycling.

Hoek founders Conor Coghlan and Brian Chu met while studying Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. After practicing Architecture in New York for a number of years they both decided to start their own design and fabrication firm, A05 Studio.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Conor came to the US in 2012. Conor received the Peter Rice Scholarship to the Harvard Graduate School of Design and graduated with a Masters in Architecture in 2015. He then worked for world-renowned Architect Toshiko Mori before founding the design-build firm A05 Studio. Conor was selected as one top emerging designers by ICFF in 2019 and has continued to innovate within the design industry most recently with the development of Hoek.
Brian graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with a master's degree in architecture. He has been the lead designer and fabricator for multiple public installations throughout NYC. Before Founding A05 Studio, Brian worked for various architecture firms such as Grimshaw Architects, StudioKCA, RMA, and DDG Partners.
As a young girl, Stefani watched, intrigued by her Dad’s architectural penmanship and drafting skills, as he designed and built their personal family home. From there, she was constantly sketching designs for “the perfect floorplan” and soaking up any design magazines she could get her hands on.
After high school graduation she spent her first two years of college studying Architecture at BYU Idaho. Widening her educational breadth, she changed her major to Interior Design and transferred to the FIDER-accredited Interior Design program at Utah State University. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from USU with her BS degree in 1996 and became NCIDQ certified in 2007.
Throughout her 20+ years of design and construction experience, Stefani has worked as a staff designer for a boutique retailer, in furniture sales, as an independent design consultant, and as the lead architectural designer for a custom and production home builder. Her 10+ years designing homes for the custom and production builders gave Stefani an insider’s edge into quality and value- engineered home design and construction.
In 2015, Stefani opened her own residential design firm, Domani Home Design. Her typical clients are homeowners looking to “level up” their home environment. The home designs Stefani produces for them utilizes her unique SMART Cycle of Design© to create quality plans that tell the homeowners’ stories and fits their own personal lifestyle through the finished floor plans.
Stefani’s home designs have won multiple awards including several People’s Choice Award for the Cache Valley HBA’s Parade of Homes. Most recently, Stefani was privileged to implement her SMART Cycle of Design© for The House That She Built that was featured in the 2021 Utah Valley Parade of Homes. She is continuing her participation and volunteer work with the mission of THTSB to educate and provide opportunities for other women to join the residential construction industry.

As Principal Architect and Founder at Murphy Partners Seniors Housing Architects, Bob has both a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Waterloo. He founded the original firm, A. Robert Murphy Architect Inc., in 1984. With experience in commercial, residential, and mixed-use properties, Bob found his niche with his very first seniors housing project in 1985. Since then, he has spent over 35 years honing his craft, both in design and in creatively approaching Seniors Housing projects with the skills and knowledge of a specialist architect.
Bob's passion for providing beautiful, safe, functional housing for seniors comes from his lifelong admiration for the "greatest generation" - and his charitable work shows it. He is a frequent donor to a variety of fundraising events for Seniors.
As Principal Architect, Bob is actively engaged in every assignment the firm undertakes. Tim Cuppett is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture. After an
internship in San Francisco, he has had the luxury of residing and practicing in Austin for
over three decades.
Cuppett is a registered Architect and Interior Designer. After a decade of working for a large
commercial firm, Cuppett began his practice focused on single-family homes. He led the
firm to multiple design awards from AIA Austin and the Texas Society of Architects. His work has
been published in local and regional magazines including Southern Living’s “Best New
Home 2014”. In 2016 Cuppett welcomed Dave Kilpatrick as a Partner in the firm. Together
their homes have been featured in six of the last ten AIA Austin homes tours.
Dave Kilpatrick is a graduate of the University of Texas, School of Architecture and a Central Texas
native. Before joining Tim Cuppett Architects in 2011, he spent time drawing houses in Southern
California and west of Austin. Somewhere during that time, he took a sabbatical to swing a
hammer in South Texas. Dave joined Tim as a partner in 2016 and was flattered to have his
name added to the masthead in 2021.
As a child, Dave spent hours in the family gallery and frame shop building chipboard models
and hawking refrigerator-quality paintings to the gallery’s patrons. Other after-school days were
spent at the family’s ad agency watching the graphic designers create page layouts. It is likely,
these experiences, that shaped his affinity for composing architecture from a graphic
perspective.
When he is not working, Dave’s wife, three kids and perpetual tinkering on his central Austin,
mid-century home keep him very busy. He also sneaks out to the golf course from time to time.
Dave is registered to practice Architecture in Texas and Minnesota.

From Houston originally, Erica Heroy comes from the family of a machine designer/ inventor, a classical musician, and some wild entrepreneurial spirit. This practice was born out of that spirit with a drive for putting things together in a lovely and practical way.
Formative years spent at firms like Tsao & McKown in NYC and Glassman Shoemake Maldonado in Houston have inspired a practice built on exceptional design and great client relationships. Those firms also gave us an interest in staying power, tradition, appropriateness, and an excitement of where old and new meet.
The last few years, it has been our pleasure to collaborate on projects of different styles, sizes, and budgets and see them through construction. While our practice is rooted in architecture, we have a strong aesthetic for interior design and enjoy the process of layering on style, color, and texture.
Erica Heroy graduated from the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture in 2001, was registered by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners in 2007, and joined the AIA in 2014.

Ashley helps lead Lake|Flato’s Austin office with a focus on designing urban environments that celebrate and enhance the remarkable connections between people and places. Her work has ranged from sustainable campus planning to boutique hospitality design, across diverse communities and ecosystems. Each of her projects creatively responds to its particular context while staying rooted in high-performance design strategies.
Ashley studied architecture at Yale and Harvard GSD, after which she helped start Low Design Office with colleagues from school who shared her interests in socially-minded design. After completing experimental design-build work in Austin, she joined Lake|Flato in San Antonio to work on more public-spirited projects across the US. In 2016, Ashley helped open LF’s Austin office, returning to a city where she strives to prioritize resilient place-making and to celebrate local ecologies amidst a rapidly-transforming region.
Ashley is a licensed architect in Texas. She has contributed to various local initiatives; with AIA, she has been a co-chair for Women in Architecture and helped establish AIA Austin’s Leadership Collective to engage emerging architects in professional development opportunities. She enjoys serving as an invited design critic at schools of architecture including UT Austin, UT San Antonio, UC Berkeley, and California College of the Arts.
Margaux is a proven team leader in Lake|Flato’s Interiors studio and key member of our Austin office. She is passionate about the relationship between interior and exterior architecture and how both can work together to support the health of people and the planet. Her designs align with a client’s brand and vision to create beautiful, functional, and vibrant designs that seamlessly transition between indoors and out. Trey Farmer, AIA received his M.Arch from The University of Texas at Austin and has 15 years of experience in sustainable design and construction. He came to Austin from New Hampshire via New Zealand and Northern California where he worked and studied English, architecture, permaculture and natural building. He is a LEED AP (BD+C) and a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) as well as a certified permaculture designer and teacher. Trey is on the Austin Passive House Alliance Board and the national Passive House Alliance Council. He spends his free time with his wife, son and fur-child on the greenbelt, in their garden and in their certified Passive House home.

With degrees in both industrial engineering and architecture, Philip loves the left brain / right brain thinking inherent in architectural design: exploring the natural tensions between function and beauty, balancing pragmatic concerns like gravity and waterproofing with artful composition of materials, light, and texture.
Philip is happiest when his hands and mind are busy in a creative endeavor: sketching, cooking, gardening, or tinkering in the shop on a woodworking or metalworking project. He loves the pace and rhythm of engaging the world on foot, whether exploring the world’s great cities, stretching his eyes on an alpine hike, or meeting neighbors while walking the dog. He also has an acknowledged “volunteering problem,” serving on way too many boards and committees and giving out wristbands at ACL tapings. He’s studying French in hopes of returning to live in Paris.
An Austinite since 1995, Troy grew up outside of Dallas and ventured south to study at UT Austin. With almost 20 years of architectural experience including residential, hospitality, planning and development, historic preservation, and construction consulting work under his belt, Troy contributes his strong design sensibilities (and unfailing sarcasm) to almost every project in the office. He is particularly interested in the expression of materiality and detailing. Outside of the office, Troy enjoys traveling with his wife and son and spending time outdoors.

Stephanie Lemmo received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Rice University. Originally born in Puebla, Mexico, Stephanie has strong roots with her Hispanic heritage and multicultural background. With over ten years of experience, she previously worked for prestigious firms in Boston and New York City including Kyu Sung Woo Architects, Ann Beha Architects, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Stephanie brings a unique perspective to all the projects she works on with her interest in both architecture and landscape design. Stephanie has taught a design studio at the University of Texas School of Architecture and has been a design critic there as well as Tulane University.
Ryan Lemmo received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Rice University. Before founding LA-N-D, Ryan was an Associate and Project Manager at Maryann Thompson Architects in Cambridge Massachusetts. Ryan has taught a design studio at the University of Texas School of Architecture and has served as an invited design critic at Northeastern University, Harvard University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and the University of Texas at Austin. Ryan is a licensed architect in Texas, New York, and Massachusetts.
Candace Wong, an Austin native and Texas A&M undergrad, is the founding principal of cwA+D, LLC. After a long stint of life, school, and jobs in Texas, Candace followed her heart and career to Los Angeles to earn a Master of Architecture at the University of Southern California, found a home at the award-winning firm KAA Design, and became a licensed Architect in 2015. After 6 years of soaking up California sun and modern architecture influence, Candace returned to Texas to start up cwA+D (aka Candace Wong Architecture + Design), a custom-residential design practice specializing in modern design for lifestyles and fun. Outside of her practice, Candace serves on the NCARB Forms Committee and AIA Austin Homes Tour Committee, is active in the Terry Scholar Alumni Association, and maintains licensure in California and Texas.

Michael Malone, FAIA is the founding principal of Malone Maxwell Dennehy Architects, a full service architectural firm based in Dallas, Texas. Since 1992, the firm has specialized in the design of retail and commercial interiors, single and multifamily residential, facilities for worship, and corporate marketing centers. The award-winning practice is frequently published in professional and shelter publications and is widely recognized for its thoughtful and considered designs. In 2013 the firm was selected as the Firm of the Year by the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Michael is a frequent contributor to professional journals and is a Contributing Editor for Texas Architect magazine. He is the author of “The Architects Guide to Residential Design” published in 2010 by McGraw Hill. Active in the Texas Society of Architects, he was the 2015 President. Previously he served as President Elect, Vice President for Outreach, Chairman of the Publications Committee, Chairman of the Texas Society of Architects Design Committee, and Chairman of the Honors and Awards committee. He initiated and chaired the first three Texas Society of Architects Design Conferences in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He currently serves as the President of the Texas Architectural Foundation and chairs the AIA Dallas Community Honors Committee.
He is a frequent speaker at professional meetings and conventions, with his programs focused primarily on the importance of design, the role of drawing in design and issues affecting the architectural profession. He was elevated to Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2017.

Steve Melvin spent his formative years working on a number of residential and health developments. He learnt here the importance of understanding the physical, social and cultural context of a building. Steve then worked in London on a number of commercial projects for high profile banks. This was followed by a period working on projects in the Spa & Leisure fields. He started work at Atelier Architecture & Design, Tring in May 1999, Steve became a Director in 2005 and Principal Director in 2009. Here his work has concentrated on all stages of the design & procurement of bespoke residential, commercial and community projects and in some legal expert witness work.

I was born as the 3rd child of an Artist Painter in northern Germany. In 1960, when I was 5, my father escaped with his family from the melancholic teutonic grey to the brilliant light of the Mediterranean island Ibiza, “Eivissa” in Catalan. For the first time, I saw the white cubes of the peasant houses, built by their inhabitants with simple means and following a Phenician pattern. I felt fascinated and attracted by the Mediterranean architecture, please mastery into the landscape of rocks and Pine trees.
As a young boy, I was playing and drawing in the studio of Erwin Broner, a German Jew, Artist Painter, and Architect, who had known Ibiza during his first exile in the late 1930ies. After a long journey of almost 17 years, first to London and later to California, he turned back to his beloved mythic Island in 1957. In the following 20 years, Broner designed a series of contemporary houses for international clients. Conceived in the tradition of European rationalism, the uncompromising buildings yet merge at perfection with the Mediterranean landscape. Nowadays, to live in a Broner-House is still considered a privilege.
Another famous Master Architect, Barcelona born Josep Lluis Sert, Dean of the Harvard Graduate Design School from 1953 to 1969, turned back to Ibiza in 1970. As did Broner, his first act in the Island was to build his own studio house, situated in the historic “Dalt Vila” District. Sert and my father have been known each other. During five years, he lived and painted in the Sert Studio, before the family settled in the “Can Pep Simó” condominium, a design from Sert and other Catalán architects friends.
Born and educated in a medieval town in Westphalia, I undertook my architectural studies at the Technical University of Berlin. Once finished my career, I undertook a useful journey through Europe, serving as an architectural apprentice in several studios in Belgium and Spain. I was happy to learn with the renaissance like Master architect Bruno Albert in Liège, where I learned that beauty and proportions are our finest tools. My first professional steps in Barcelona a link to the PSP Studio. Ferran de los Santos and Joan Maria Pascual were so patient to explain the secrets of Catalán craftsmanship to the young German architect.
The next steps were the association with Guillermo Bañares, a practice, which lasted 20 years. I own Guillermo the knowledge of Spanish society and uncountable conversations about architecture and design, scouting together our projects, a broad range of residential, hospitality, corporate and industrial buildings.
Finally, at the beginning of the severe financial and Economic crisis, in 2007 I created my own practice, Wortmann Architects.
Although I consider myself, aware of my German roots, as a “Mediterranean Prussian”, I feel at home under the Mediterranean sun in the ancient “Marca Hispanica” of Catalonia. Since more than 30 years, I enjoy living and working as an Architect, with my family, in Barcelona.

Chris has always sought to make the urban environment a richer place through his architecture and interiors practice.
Chris studied at University College’s Bartlett in London. From there he received a Master’s in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh and went on to work for Skidmore Owings and Merrill Architects, better known as SOM, in the London, Washington DC, and New York offices. Chris soon set his sights on opening his own practice, Fogarty Finger, in 2003 with just two employees.
In the nearly 20 years since, Chris’s firm has flourished, playing a pioneering role in the multifamily housing realm, joining forces with the Interiors Division to create top-to-bottom residential and commercial transformations, and recently expanding into the Boston and Atlanta markets, while counting a total of 127 diverse employees among its ranks.
Two of the firm’s major projects—141 Willoughby, an office tower in downtown Brooklyn, and Astoria West, the largest residential development ever built along Astoria’s burgeoning waterfront, both topped out in recent months. While construction is underway on The Nova, a striking residential tower in Long Island City completing in September. Meanwhile, The Lively, which adds 180 luxury residential units to Jersey City’s growing downtown district, as well as ground-level commercial space and a new performing arts center, nabbed an AIA NJ award for its impressive design.
Earlier in 2021, The Dime, a live-work-play building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn opened its doors. And on the boards, in the borough’s Gowanus neighborhood, are projects, including the 600,000-square-foot building at 300 Nevins, that reflect the new zoning legislation that recently occurred in the city. Collectively, these projects capture Fogarty Finger’s dominance in the outer-boroughs of New York City as an architecture and interior design firm shaping the cityscape.

Jason Boyer’s work redefines what’s possible through the eyes of the client - rethinking the norms of architectural practice to drive performance-based design solutions that result in elegant, simple, and compelling project outcomes. A graduate from the University of Illinois and Arizona State University, Boyer was recognized among the top three graduates in his Master of Architecture class and has since served in an Adjunct Faculty position with the ASU School of Architecture.
At age 35 Boyer was named Design Principal and Director of Architecture for the Phoenix office of OWP/P, a notable accomplishment in a profession where the average principal age is 52. In 2009 OWP/P merged with Cannon Design where he served as Design Principal for Cannon Design’s Phoenix based Western Mountain Region office. A firm-wide design leader, he collaborated across offices with projects in Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. His design leadership was recognized by the General Services Administration in 2009 with the selection of his portfolio for the Region 9 Land Port of Entry Design Excellence IDIQ program.
In 2012 Boyer founded Jason Boyer Architects, adding real estate development to his skillset with the completion of artHAUS, a nationally recognized residential infill project. He has since transformed his practice to include design-led real estate development, re-establishing it as Boyer Vertical in 2020. Jason Boyer’s work redefines what’s possible through the eyes of the client - rethinking the norms of architectural practice to drive performance-based design solutions that result in elegant, simple, and compelling project outcomes. A graduate from the University of Illinois and Arizona State University, Boyer was recognized among the top three graduates in his Master of Architecture class and has since served in an Adjunct Faculty position with the ASU School of Architecture.
At age 35 Boyer was named Design Principal and Director of Architecture for the Phoenix office of OWP/P, a notable accomplishment in a profession where the average principal age is 52. In 2009 OWP/P merged with Cannon Design where he served as Design Principal for Cannon Design’s Phoenix based Western Mountain Region office. A firm-wide design leader, he collaborated across offices with projects in Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. His design leadership was recognized by the General Services Administration in 2009 with the selection of his portfolio for the Region 9 Land Port of Entry Design Excellence IDIQ program.
In 2012 Boyer founded Jason Boyer Architects, adding real estate development to his skillset with the completion of artHAUS, a nationally recognized residential infill project. He has since transformed his practice to include design-led real estate development, re-establishing it as Boyer Vertical in 2020. Heather grew up in South Africa where she studied Architecture at ‘Wits’ University in Johannesburg and immigrated during the Soweto riots to complete her degrees at Ball State University in Indiana.
Prior to studying Architecture Heather attended the National School of the Arts and the Italian Dressmaking School in Johannesburg.
She has lived and worked in New York since 1981. Her early role as associate with prominent design firms included a leading creative role with retail and residential projects across the United States and the world. This continued when she opened her company where she has worked with a wide array of clients. Always finding new and creative solutions often where others feared to tread or did not succeed, usually exceeding expectations.
Always up for a challenge, and “never the same solution” she is passionate about the timelessness and elevation of each and every client that her team selects to work with. Her work currently includes work for clients from Holland, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom and China and projects lie in New York, London, Costa Rica, across the Hamptons, Los Angeles, Chicago and Florida.
Any free time, when there is no tennis, is spent on the design and execution of her chandeliers and furniture line and exploring lighting and ever new technologies.
Her marriage to the South African ambassador to the United Nations was at the time of Mandelas inauguration and her “front row seat” to all that transpired brought a new depth of understanding and inspiration to her work. After successfully combating the onset of cancer with diet and acupuncture, she adopted her daughter from China, thus adding another chapter to her always interesting stories.

Sara Duffy helms the interiors division of Stonehill Taylor and is one of the few women principals who leads a major hospitality design firm.
Sara was a major force in the transformation of the TWA Hotel at JFK airport in 2019, and during the pandemic it was Sara’s leadership that helped to keep her firm on course. The recent renovations of the Marriott Marquis and the Algonquin are a testament to her dogged determination and leadership skills even during the most difficult days of the last two years.
Sara’s background includes growing up in Manhattan, a degree in Art History, a stint at MTV, and several years as a designer at Rockwell Group. Her list of Stonehill Taylor projects include those in the Big Apple as well as hotels in Nashville and Las Vegas.
Sara has been interviewed in Interior Design Magazine, Madame Architect, Design Milk, IFDM , and in ArchNative’s Women Who Inspire series. She also shared some of her hospitality experiences with Dan Ryan on the podcast, Defining Hospitality and spoke about breathing new life into historic hotels with host David Kepron on the podcast NXTLVL experience design. Sara has also served on the juries for several prestigious awards such as Frame and Ahead. She is undeniably someone who shapes the thinking around design.

Ana Maria Torres established at architects in New York City in 2000. Ms. Torres is a licensed as an urban planner as well as an architect in both Spain and New York State. Before arriving in the United States, Ana Maria Torres was Associate Professor of Architectural Design at E. T. S. Architecture in Madrid.
As a partner at Balmori Associates in New Haven, CT, where she was a principal prior to establishing at architects, Ana Maria Torres was responsible for the landscape and urban design of Abandoibarra in Bilbao, Spain; the Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami, Florida; the Museum of Modern Art in Osaka, Japan; and the Petronas Towers Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. She was also a finalist in the World War II Memorial Competition in Washington, DC.
NYC-based female architect Ana Maria Torres and her firm, at architects, collaborated with FBMI (an initiative to empower underprivileged communities in Dubai) and put on a carpet installation at this past year's Dubai Design Week, titled "A Dream of Few".
"This project is, above all, a collaboration formed by merging the weaving tradition and a subjective understanding of design and aesthetics. A conversation bloomed between a foundation and an architect; between foundation and weaver; between weaver and architect. Each carpet represents a story told through the rich tradition of the weaver, of the loom, of the instrument of weaving, of personal hand-weaving methods interwoven with the intentions, desires, and vision of the designer. This combination presents the ideal medium for an artist who wishes to cross boundaries and present a unique process of collaboration as her chosen practice."

LaRue Architects Reimagines an Historic Austin Home While Paying Homage to its Neighborhood
This 107 year old house was among the few remaining in a historic Austin neighborhood. LaRue Architects took on a giant process to keep its historic preservation with 21st century luxury. This is one of the few residential homes in Austin with this downtown view. Architects James LaRue and associate Emily Hayden used three-dimensional architectural modeling to create a virtual walk-through that allowed the homeowners to evaluate the exact views from each room by specific time of day.
The homeowners purchased their new home in the historic and highly desirable Clarksville neighborhood which flanks the west side of Austin’s downtown. Built in 1915, the house was among the few remaining that had not been scooped up and demolished thanks to its previous owner -- who had lived in the house for over half a century and didn’t want to see it torn down. Austin based LaRue Architects spent time researching the home’s history and consulted with a historic restoration expert to help inform their work.
The house is perched on a hill with one-of-a kind views of the Texas State Capitol and the expanding Austin skyline -- uniquely located at the threshold between the sparkling new downtown hi-rises and the historic fabric of one of Austin’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods. LaRue and Foursquare Builders took great time and care to hold on to the home’s historic character. The team set out to painstakingly restore and rebuild -- as old and new now seamlessly meld in the new 3,900 SF home.

She is also an Adjunct Professor at Lafayette College where she teaches a course called Planning the Built Environment.

Chen + Suchart Studio works at a variety of scales ranging from small well crafted projects and single family residences to larger scale urban design. The practice is not interested in style. The common thread between all projects undertaken in our studio is the integrity of design that transcends style. The work of the studio is focused on the reinvention of known ideas, spatial experience, and the quality and craft of construction in all of our projects.
Thamarit Suchart and Patricia Szu-Ping Chen Suchart completed their studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture 1997) and Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (Master of Architecture in Urban Design 1999). Thamarit was born and raised in Arizona. Having left Arizona for 13 years of education on the east coast of the United States, he chose to return to Arizona to raise his family and to start a design practice with Patricia in 2002. Patricia is a native of Taipei, Taiwan.
After working for numerous award winning architecture firms in both Boston and Phoenix, the pair officially established their own architecture firm in 2010. In 2012, the firm was identified as “15 Young Firms to Watch: Chen + Suchart Studio” by Residential Architect Magazine. Since 2015, the firm has been the recipient of a total of nine AIA design awards, from both the AIA Arizona Chapter as well as from the AIA Western Mountain Region Chapter. 2015 also included an award from Residential Architect Magazine, where The Staab Residence was awarded the Design Award for a Custom Home over 3,000 SF. Thamarit is a registered architect in the State of Arizona, Georgia, and New Jersey.
Thamarit has also served as a faculty associate and adjunct lecturer, teaching undergraduate and graduate design studios at both Arizona State University and the University of Arizona from 2010-2016. He is committed to sharing his knowledge with the future generations of architects when the practice allows for the dedication of time for design education.

Since 2012 Aimée Ralfini has curated arts activation platform Art Ache.
Art Ache communicates fine art and creative thought to a wide and varied audience through events, social media, digital billboard campaigns, 100’s of radio podcasts, regular editorial art coverage and other bespoke activations. Through it Ralfini aims to strengthen New Zealand’s creative muscle and make art part of everyday conversation.

Considered a ‘holy goddess of creative fecundity’ by her peers, Ralfini is credited with paving the way for New Zealand artists on social and in mainstream media, forging a path for a new wave of entry to medium level clientele after the 2009 financial crisis.
Born and bred in Auckland, Ralfini gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in intermedia and has spent most of her adult life working at media networks, design studios and advertising agencies.
NZ DEAD AHEAD
nz_dead_ahead is Ralfini’s latest creative offering. Inspired by the interior design of deceased estates being sold in New Zealand.
Propelled by rising house prices with cheap upgrades, Aimee felt it was time to document the last of these outstanding monuments to a culture in rapid decline.
nz_dead_ahead presents like a view finder of a period of idealism and “quality living” in the nation’s history.
The collection of interior and exterior photographs are all for sale at the time of selection, with many of them containing elements that will resonate with anyone who grew up in 19th century New Zealand.
To jog memories and manifest her own, Aimee comments about the nature of the contents through several lenses; that of a realtor, a romantic novelist and an interior designer.
Ralfini works alongside sometimes collaborator Kate van der Fluit to capture as many of these quintessential relics as she can, and will continue to do so until they are no more.

Sara Kolata was always a humanitarian at heart and dreamt of making the world a better place.
Sara studied in London submerged in the world of prestigious Architecture. She was inspired by the glorious career paths of celebrity architects and believed for this to be the only path to success within the industry. She did however question the humanitarian, environmental and socio-economic impact of many of their projects and felt uneasy with what she saw.
Sara longed to see more meaning and contribution in their work.
Sara also began to realise how difficult it is for young architects to get the full experience of project delivery and building, and she didn’t want to be a drafter.
She wanted to get my hands dirty, building.
At the age of 23, Sara went to a conference at TU Berlin dedicated to architects doing humanitarian aid. They looked different to all the pale, overworked architects she had met before. They looked happy, had tones of travel stories and fascinating career paths. They also were building like crazy. Delivering countless projects around the world, building much more than the architects she studied. They were building projects that were needed and quick to implement, and in this, Sara saw an opportunity of being able to become an architect in the full essence.
"That’s what I want my life as an architect to look like."- Sara thought.
Sara went on a search looking around the world to find where she could make an impact like that.

RailiCA design stems from former fashion executive Raili Clasen’s love for eclectic California interior design. Following a lengthy career with Quiksilver and Paul Frank, Clasen co-founded hip housewares brand, Alice Supply Co. The move into the interior design business came naturally after several of her home projects were featured in magazines, design blogs and her own homes showcased on the popular Newport Harbor Home tour.

Janine is an internationally experienced architect. Working in remote locations is her forte. After having lived + worked in the UK, Namibia, Australia, Zambia and the Bahamas over the last two decades, she’s now often found in her soul home, Southern Africa.
Sixty-one weeks into her architectural education Janine nearly quit her studies. Thank heavens she was assigned to evaluate the finest architect home in South Africa. Gawie Fagan conceived the design for his family home during a flight and drew it on the back of a cigarette box, thereafter he built it as an owner/builder. On the spot Janine realised that she had to continue with her studies. When she walked up the suspended timber staircase, connecting the public spaces to the private bedrooms, she got butterflies… she had never experienced such a beautiful undulating ceiling moulding space and framing views... From that moment onwards she dedicated her life to creating incredible spaces to touch the soul and take the breath away.
With her mom being an art teacher and her dad an avid part-time woodworker and owner/builder, design and creating was a part of everyday life. At the age of ten, Janine opted for woodwork instead of needlework. In later years she dabbled in jewellery design, ceramics and bronze casting, resulting in her built environment designs being complemented by bespoke, handcrafted components.
She believes that your home symbolizes the life you want to be living. Her designs are shelters for your physical body, mind and soul.

Christopher K. Travisis the founder and lead designer for Truehome Design.Build. He designed and built a broad variety of residential and historic projects in Texas from 1995 to 2014, including high-end new homes, ranches and estates, major remodeling, historic restoration and adaptive re-use of historic structures, historic and light commercial projects.
From 1995 until 2013, Travis was the founder, lead designer and Managing Partner of Sentient Architecture, LLC, (Formerly Round Top Architecture). He partnered with commercial architect, Robert Brett Pitt, in that enterprise serving the rural areas of South Central Texas and the Austin, Texas environs. In 2013, the partners formed individual enterprises and Travis moved his design practice into Truehome Design.Build.
Travis is an expert on the adaptive re-use of period materials and artifacts, as well as human factors based architectural programming for residential projects. He is the author of the Truehome Workshop and the originator of that systematic process which he has used with clients for over eighteen years.
One of his projects was awarded a T. C. Jester award for excellence in historic design in the historic Houston Heights. Mr. Travis’ company was named Remodeler of the Year by the Greater Houston Builder’s Association. He is also an expert on designing and building projects on remote sites and in rural areas.
His projects have appeared in the New York Times, Builder magazine, Country Living, Cowboys and Indians, Home Companion, Sun Coast Magazine, Go Magazine (Airtran Airways flight magazine), Hommes Magazine in Greece; the San Antonio Express News, the Marin County Independent Journal, The Providence Sunday Journal, in Texas Highways and before employee groups at Microsoft and Google. Major stories on his approach have appeared twice in German publications and in the Netherlands and Australia.
Mr. Travis is also a writer and theorist who has a multi-disciplinary interest in how psychological techniques, and human factors findings, can be applied to architecture and residential design to more effectively create homes and living environments that “fit the psychological nature of people” .He studies and applies the possibility of therapeutic architecture in his design practice. It is this long term study that inspired both the last twenty years of his design practice and the Truehome Workshop. He believes the psychological and emotional needs of the inhabitants of a home should guide the work of designers, and has used his systematic method for that purpose with his clients since 1998, and exclusively since 2002.

During thirty years of architectural practice Jeff has acquired extensive experience in all aspects of the building process, from design through project management and construction administration. He has designed, detailed and managed numerous commercial, residential, and institutional projects throughout the United States and abroad.
Prior to founding the firm in 1992, Jeff worked for several well-known architectural firms, most recently with Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates in Philadelphia. He has been a registered architect since 1985, has taught architectural design studios at Drexel University for thirty years, and has been active on many non-profit organizations' boards. A Pittsburgh native, Jeff found the architecture of the iconic steel mills an early influence.

D U S T is an alliance of architects, craftspeople, artists, designers, and builders with practices rooted in the master-builder tradition: a collective of people grounded firmly in the tactile, in pursuit of the intangible.
The studio explores ideas and ethics rooted in a reverent intimacy with craft and place. Ideas unfold in the creative space of intersections and find form through a respect for material and an unwavering attention to craft by skilled hands.
The seeds of this practice were planted in the late 1990s on the vast plains of the Llano Estacado in West Texas; the studio was born in Tucson, Arizona in 2007 as a collaboration between Cade Hayes and Jesús Robles who join Adrian in this episode of TALKdesign.
Cade has been one of the founding/managing principals of D U S T ® since its establishment in 2007. Each of the works shows a heightened sensitivity to place and the environment, expanding the discourse on lifestyle in harmony with the environment.
In addition to practice, Cade has served on national design juries, has been a visiting instructor at Texas Tech University, and has taught Land Ethics design studios and Material Fabrication courses at the University of Arizona.
Jesús has been one of the founding/managing principals of D U S T ® since its establishment in 2007. Each of the works shows an investigation into sustainable material development, articulation of craft throughout the design and build processes, and contributes to the discourse of phenomenology and place in architecture.
In addition to practice, Jesus has contributed to Platform, a publication of the University of Texas at Austin, and is an instructor at the University of Arizona teaching design studios and Material Fabrication.

Cavin Costello is the Principal Architect of The Ranch Mine, an architecture firm he co-founded with his wife Claire in 2010 at the young age of 24 in Phoenix, Arizona. Originally from the northeastern part of the United States, Cavin moved site unseen to Phoenix after earning his undergraduate and Master's Degree in Architecture, inspired by the inventive work being done by Will Bruder, Wendell Burnette and Rick Joy, as well as the opportunities in a growing, young city in a powerful natural environment. Cavin and Claire started The Ranch Mine during the peak of the Great Recession, slowly building their practice from designing bathrooms locally to now designing homes across Arizona, the United States and globally. Specializing in designing homes for people with the pioneer spirit, their unique design approach and mission of honoring the past, challenging the norm, and inspiring the future has won them multiple national and local awards, including HGTV’s Designer of the Year in 2019 and the American Institute of Architects naming them the “Future of Architecture” in 2015.

Sam Gosling seeks the future of human study of architectural data.
The purpose of this survey is to inventory, prioritize, and understand the ambiances and emotions people desire in the different spaces of their ideal building environment. It should take around 20 minutes to complete. The research is being conducted by the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with Cushing Terrell, a multi-disciplinary design firm.

Paula Baker-Laporte FAIA, BBNC, BBEC is an architect, Building Biologist, author, healthy building consultant and educator. Graduating from the University of Toronto School of Architecture in 1978 and from the Institute of Building Biology and Ecology in 1994. She founded her own award-winning architectural practice in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1986-2009. She was honored for her work in healthy architecture and made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2007. Simon Devitt is a photographer with a strong practice focus in Photography of Architecture, currently based in Auckland, New Zealand, with an established international practice throughout Australasia and further afield.
Simon has both a strong sense of home and a wanderlust which goes right back to when he was born in a sandstorm beside a sleeping camel in 1973. Working in many different settings across cultures around the world has had a great impact on his professional practice, which has been greatly enriched by Simon's experience of each particular context: Shanghai and its people, the fruitful silence of a Japanese bamboo forest, the light in Los Angeles, so different to the harsh, more direct light in New Zealand. Simon Devitt loves people in my photos as their appearance adds a sense of scale and a place in time.
Simon is an author of the award-winning photo-book Rannoch and the All Things Considered series. Photo-books bring together his passion for image, place and language, which started in 2013 with the launch of Portrait of a House, his first self- published photo-book on the Athfield residence in Wellington. Since then, Simon has started publishing the Ripe Fruit series.

Sam Gosling is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas, Austin, and a Professorial Fellow at the Department of Psychological Sciences at Melbourne University. He did his doctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley, where his dissertation focused on personality in spotted hyenas. His current research focuses on the psychology of physical space, how personality is expressed in everyday contexts in daily life, and in new methods for collecting data in the behavioral sciences. His approach is ecological, emphasizing the importance of studying individuals in the contexts of their natural habitats. He is an elected fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP). He is the recipient of the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution, the Carol and Ed Diener Award in Personality Psychology, and SPSP’s award for methodological innovation. Jodie Carter has always loved design, early memories of visiting art galleries & historic homes with her Gran as a child are still vivid. Jodie will never forget the first truly amazing country home she visited with her. The massive front door was opened revealing a grand entry with black & white marble floors & a huge timber staircase with carpet runner. Jodie knew she was somewhere special. There were Deer heads on the wall, coat racks & gumboots, high ceilings & timber panelling. It was a little scary, but so grand & she loved it.
Jodie began to think more about homes, the feelings they evoke, what they say about the people who live there. Being surrounded by history, stories and memories. Jodie bought her first home in New Zealand at 17 & began the lifelong love affair. Jodie does what she does because she cannot imagine ever doing anything else. Jodie is about to start her 6th renovation project herself, the largest to date & it’s got timber panelling, a grand entry & arches! She can’t wait.

The work of Cindy Press celebrates women by exploring the connection between fashion and personal identity. Inspired by magazines, photography, and popular culture Press considers how style reflects how we engage with the world around us. “Often times it’s a gesture or pose I am interested in, it’s there that I see the history of figure or portrait painting. Clothes are a personal decision and what we choose to wear is the way we express ourselves and connect with the world around us”.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Press is a graduate of Moore College Of Art And Design. Being a fashion illustration major at Moore prepared her for decades of success in the fashion design world. She went onto work with artists such as Peter Max, an iconic painter of the 60”s and 70’s, interpreting his artwork into wearable art.
By merging her knowledge of fashion, the human figure, her life as a woman, mother and artist Press’s artwork forms a narrative that speaks to both men and women. Her female characters are inspired with an array of human emotion that goes beyond gender or age. She does not objectify the subjects of her paintings and drawings but instead seeks to capture their drama, confidence, sex appeal and charm. Press likes to emphasize the provocative, challenging the viewer to think even if it makes them uncomfortable.
Her style is heavily influenced by contemporary fashion photography from the 60’s to present time. While her signature is the way she transforms black and white oil paint on canvas Press likes to surprise with the occasional sprinkling of color added to the mix. Her process is evolving as she photographs her own subjects and merges them with parts of found images.
Press’swork has been exhibited worldwide and is in private collections around the globe in major hubs such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Sydney, Dubai and Hong Kong. Some of her clients include Bloomingdales, The Four Season’s Hotel, The Thompson Hotel Group and AIDA Cruise Line.

Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, is an owner and design principal of Olson Kundig. Kundig has received some of the world’s highest design honors, including a National Design Award in Architecture from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and an election to the National Academy as an Academician in Architecture. Most recently, Kundig was awarded the AIA Seattle Medal of Honor as well as a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Washington. She and her husband Henri LamBeau met in architecture school at the University of Idaho, where they both received a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). Cinda returned home from the great American West, bringing Henri along with her, and received her Master of Urban Planning and Policy (M.UPP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Cinda and Henri currently live in suburban Chicago with their 17-year-old son Cooper and 15-year-old daughter Kellar, both architectural storytellers in their own right, with pencil, computer and LEGO. Cinda is first and foremost a Lake Girl, and treasures every minute that she can get in southern Wisconsin on her water.

In the summer of 2014, Davey McEathron Architecture was founded upon the idea of the architect as artist and master craftsman. DMA celebrates the process of designing and building through listening and collaboration. With an equal amount of space dedicated to a design studio and a fabrication studio, DMA positions itself in a unique location between design, testing, and realization.
Davey McEathron has been designing buildings, furniture and public art in Austin since 2008. Born and raised in Houston, Davey spent the early part of his adult life travelling the United States as a singer and guitar player for several Texas indie rock bands before deciding to go back to college to become an architect in the early 2000's.
Davey graduated from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon - a city known for burgeoning ideas in urban design and sustainability. While there, he spent his summer breaks working for Allusa Architecture under the mentorship of Bob Schatz. Longing for good Mexican food and hot summers, Davey returned to Texas after graduation - landing in Austin - a place where many of his old musician friends lived.
Since living in Austin, Davey has worked for architecture firms of all sizes, with project types covering a wide spectrum - residential design/build with Jay Hargrave Architecture; multi-family with the Hailey Group; and academic housing with Lord, Aeck and Sargent. Davey spent 5 years working for Carter Design Associates under the guidance of Donna Carter and Abby Lawson. There he worked on projects ranging from residential, commercial, religious, civic, academic and urban planning, to public pool facilities and even a pistol range for the City of Austin Police Department.
Carter Design Associates was given awards for several projects that Davey worked on, including an Associated General Contractor's Award for the Deep Eddy Pool Renovation and an American Society of Landscape Architects award for the Republic Square Master Plan, with which Carter Design Associates prepared the architecture and historical portion of. In 2014, Bartholomew Pool received a "Best of Austin" award from the Austin Chronicle.
Davey is also a founding member of ¡el grupo! - a creative collective of artists, architects and craftsmen that look for unique opportunities and projects to impact the surrounding community. ¡el grupo! has been honored with several different awards in the few years it was in existence. In 2009, they were awarded Best Backyard Bungalow for a doghouse that they designed/built for a charity auction. In 2011, the Austin Chronicle awarded ¡el grupo! a "Best of Austin" award for the Moustache Ride. In 2012, the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects also gave a Merit Award for the Moustache Ride.
In addition to Davey McEathron Architecture, in the summer of 2020, Davey McEathron started Rock Paper Build, a Design/Build/Develop, company with his wife, Rebecca Holliday. Together, they are building craft-driven projects, developing several lots on the Eastside of Austin, as well as building their own house.
Davey is a licensed Architect in the State of Texas and a LEED Accredited Professional.

Tim describes the world’s first space hotel as going on a cruise however in space.
Tim Alatorre states how he expects the newest destination hotel in space to begin operation in 2025, and to be completed by 2027. It is expected that going to space will be very costly as travelling to a different country in our same planet is. However, Tim strives to make the station an achievable holiday destination for the average person.
While overseas travel is closed off, we all have the chance to save towards a more futuristic and eye-opening holiday that will be available in only a couple of years!
Lorna has designed a wide range of her own personal projects including ‘change of use’, amalgamations, demolitions/alterations/additions, subdivisions, over-55 villages and commercial precincts.
In 2010 Lorna also successfully completed The Australian Institute of Directors Course in Melbourne and in 2011 the MBE Corporate Advisory and Capital Raising Course in Sydney.
Since moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2013, her most recent involvement has been with The Ivy at Picnic Point, a 37 Apartment 7 Storey complex on the Maroochydore River; and Tulipwood Estate which is a 65 Lot Residential Subdivision at Nambour. These along with the Lowanna Beach Resort bring Lorna’s current personal involvement in property development to over $120mil here in Queensland.

Thad Reeves received his Masters of Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1997. During this time, he studied in Spain and traveled extensively in Europe. His interest in historic European architecture’s influence on contemporary design has led him on numerous architectural pilgrimages throughout Western and Central Europe, Australia, and the United States.
Upon graduation, Thad worked for RTKL Associates in Dallas, where he worked on both local and International award winning projects. After a short time he had the opportunity to participate in the legacy of Oglesby Greene Architects where he honed his skills on well-crafted, smaller scale projects.
In 2003, Thad helped form the offices of Thomas Krahenbuhl and Truett Roberts Architects where, as a senior associate, he continued to work on commercial and residential projects at all phases of the design process.
Thad co-founded IPB LLC in 2005 as a way to purchase and develop projects. He undertook the restoration of an historic 1920’s residential complex where he acted as developer, designer and contractor.
In 2005, Thad began teaching at the University of Texas in Arlington and co-founded A.GRUPPO Architects. He is a registered architect in the state of Texas and is the recipient of the McDermott traveling fellowship.

Peter received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame in 1988.
In 1991 he moved to Germany, learned enough German to work as the lead designers of a German firm, Diniaware Architects in Königstein.
Peter then moved to Baltimore in 1995 and worked for 10 years for the premier residential architects in the area. There he honed his craft of designing beautiful and practical client-focused homes.
He opened 2e Architects in 2005. A couple of years later he changed residential architecture by offering Unlimited 3D Renderings to all of his clients. Then in 2016, he began innovating again - this time pioneering the use of Virtual Reality. Founder and Director. Starting with a team of just 3 people and £2,000 funding from The Prince's Trust, RDA now employs a team of 10-15 people and is now turning over more than £1,000,000. The practice works on projects worth around £20 million. RDA are purveyors of BIM and are exploring the use of virtual reality in the Architectural Profession. The practice has a commitment to working with new technologies, off-site construction and Passivhaus design. At least 20% of time is spent working with R&D in the industry exploring new sustainable ideas. To date RDA have built eight certified Passivhaus’s and are striving to meet London’s 2050 Net Zero commitment. As “ LETI Pioneers” Richard and his team are experts in this field.
Richard comes from a second-generation immigrant Polish speaking family, born in London. He has travelled extensively in search of his family’s epic refugee and 2nd world war tale.
His undergraduate Architecture degree was gained in Liverpool, whilst gaining a distinction for his post-graduate qualification in London using Film as a base for studying Architecture. He has been a lecturer for some ten years at Chelsea College of Art, Greenwich and Southbank University. He has had a column in Building Design, written in other publication and appeared on the BBC.
He has worked in Hong Kong and Mumbai as an Architect. Though the longing of his motorcycle explorations beckoned for him to carry on exploring the world on two wheels. From Nepal to India to the States on a Harley. He still prefers two wheels to four, though now cycling.

Ms. Saheb is the founding architect of the firm Saheb Architecture in New York city. She has over 20 years of experience altering buildings in large urban cities. She offers design solutions to townhouse and building owners to raise the value of their property through redevelopment and/or passive rental income. She is an expert in Conversions of residential buildings.
Ms. Saheb was born in India, and grew up in the large city of Mumbai. She graduated from University of Mumbai and was licensed as an architect at the age of 24. She then set up her own architectural practice in Mumbai. Soon after, she took the bold decision to move to America, and arrived in New York as a tourist at 25. She started her life from the bottom of the society to build it up to the current flourishing design-development business, with many twists and turns along the way.

Some might call Russell Manley the pioneer of the retro-modern barbershop movement. A British transplant and long-time barber, Manley opened his first New York shop on the Lower East in 2008, originally named Tommy Guns. Years later, the uber-trendy location expanded to a second shop in Williamsburg.
Brooklyn has become Manley’s main hub. Manly rebranded the salon and debuted a new name: Ludlow Blunt. Located on 85 N 3rd Street in Brooklyn, NY, Ludlow Blunt offers the atmosphere of a true traditional barbershop. "Our interior has authentic 1885 Cuban mahogany pharmacy cabinets and original 1930's barber chairs," Manley says. "Every detail—from the fans to the light switches and cash register—is all original."
Even though Manley credits some of the shop's popularity to its authentic barbershop feel, it's not only a place for men. "The atmosphere is that of a high-end barbershop, but our staff is comprised of all senior stylists and trained hairdressers," Manley says. "In fact, 50 percent of our clients are women. We offer everything a woman could get at a regular salon, but we cater to guys for shaves and cuts, too."

Heather Faulding
Heather grew up in South Africa where she studied Architecture at ‘Wits’ University in Johannesburg and immigrated during the Soweto riots to complete her degrees at Ball State University in Indiana.
Prior to studying Architecture Heather attended the National School of the Arts and the Italian Dressmaking School in Johannesburg.
She has lived and worked in New York since 1981. Her early role as associate with prominent design firms included a leading creative role with retail and residential projects across the United States and the world. This continued when she opened her company where she has worked with a wide array of clients. Always finding new and creative solutions often where others feared to tread or did not succeed, usually exceeding expectations. Always up for a challenge, and “never the same solution” she is passionate about the timelessness and elevation of each and every client that her team selects to work with. Her work currently includes work for clients from Holland, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom and China and projects lie in New York, London, Costa Rica, across the Hamptons, Los Angeles, Chicago and Florida.
Any free time, when there is no tennis, is spent on the design and execution of her chandeliers and furniture line and exploring lighting and ever new technologies.
Her marriage to the South African ambassador to the United Nations was at the time of Mandelas inauguration and her “front row seat” to all that transpired brought a new depth of understanding and inspiration to her work. After successfully combating the onset of cancer with diet and acupuncture, she adopted her daughter from China, thus adding another chapter to her always interesting stories.

Ridgeview House Bio
This 2500s house is nestled within a grove of heritage live oak trees on a 3/4 acre lot in the Barton Hills neighborhood of Austin, TX. Our clients wanted to build a house that respected the mid-century character of the neighborhood, while pursuing a bold and contemporary approach to design. The outcome is a project which creates strong, unexpected connections between indoors and out, with an angular roof form and black vertical siding that simultaneously camouflage and contrast the house with its leafy natural surroundings.
Initially conceived as a renovation project, the footprint closely mirrors the idiosyncratic H-shaped plan of the original house, which 'grandfathered in' certain areas of the trees' critical root zones, permitting them to be built over. The new plan creates a clear logic with a 'public' wing (containing kitchen, dining, media room and screened porch), a 'private' wing (of bedrooms and bathrooms) and a living room bridging between the two.
The exterior is clad in a common fiber-cement 'board and batten' siding. Painted black, with the battens multiplied in a dense, vertical pattern, the siding takes on artful 'forest-like' qualities. The front porch and carport soffit are clad in a stained pine, providing a warm counterpoint to the starkness of the black exterior. Buried at the center of the house is a bathroom unexpectedly bathed in natural light from a skylight overhead. The light cascading down the white, textured tile creates the feeling of an 'inner sanctum', a retreat from the exuberant embrace of the outdoors across the rest of the house.
Robert Bio
Robert grew up making things in the woods of Alabama and helping his Dad on jobsites around the state. Since beginning his architectural studies at Auburn University twenty five years ago, his diverse design and building experience has centered on material experimentation, building systems and well-crafted details. He has an intuitive design sense, a sophisticated understanding of construction processes, and exacting quality control standards, making him an invaluable leader through all phases of a project. Prior to founding Thoughtbarn, Robert worked in the offices of Baldridge Architects in Austin, Adjaye Associates in London and Roth + Sheppard in Denver, and was a lead research member for the Plastics in Architecture project conducted by current Kieran Timberlake Research Group director Billie Faircloth. He was also a founding partner of BBIITT (Building Integrating Technology), a digital fabrication consultancy that collaborated with other design firms to create products, furniture and small scale works. Robert has taught graduate and undergraduate studios at the University of Texas School of Architecture and is a regular visiting critic.

Originally from the UK, Lucy’s stateside experiences span from a small town in rural Alabama (at the Rural Studio) to the West Coast (grad school at Berkeley) to over a decade in Austin running Thoughtbarn along with her husband Robert Gay. Their work focuses on architecture and public art projects that synthesize an economy of means with inventive material strategies and a responsiveness to social and environmental context. A skilled communicator and organizer, she has a passion for delivering project excellence within complex urban settings and in fusing design practice with public interest and advocacy work. She attended the Outreach Program at Auburn University's renowned Rural Studio in Alabama and was awarded the Branner Travelling Fellowship from UC Berkeley, which enabled her to spend a year working with architects around the globe innovating with participatory design methods. Lucy was the recipient of the 2020 AIA Austin Emerging Professional Award and currently serves on the Publications Committee of Texas Architect magazine and the board of Civic Arts, a non-profit which integrates the arts and culture into community planning. She lives with Robert and their two kids on a small lot in East Austin and is a champion of land use reform in the city that would allow more families to do the same.

Tim Cuppett Architects is a full service Architecture and Interior Design practice, with a residential portfolio spanning two decades. Our work is rooted in traditional forms of hearth and home interpreted in a quiet modernism. Homes are sensitive to site and climate, expressing a respect for and drawing inspiration from context. "Consult the genius of the place..." by Alexander Pope is the benchmark quote by which our works take shape.
CAMP FRIO : A multi-family compound rises from a remote, grassy valley on the bank of the Frio River deep in the Texas Hill Country. The goal for this project was to create shelters with an environmental experience unique to its place where Summer madness gives way to Winter stillness. Where city life and digital stimulation are replaced by the experience of feeling a cool breeze or snuggling up to a warm fire.
Structures consist of a main house, meditation room over art studio/garage, and two guest studio cottages. The main house and cottages are linked by a slightly elevated walkway which enables barefoot kids to run back and forth over the tall grass and creepie crawlers.
Much like “Dogtrot” shelters from the past, a “breezeway” bookended by concealed multi-slide doors, bisects the main house enabling alfresco dining most of the year; alternatively, the space is zoned and can be enclosed for heating. Screened porches, front and back, envelope cozy living chambers. Secondary sleeping spaces occupy an attic that spans the rear porch of the main house while cottages feature open “kid’s” lofts.
Structures were detailed for simplicity of construction with readily available, local materials and fashioned by local tradesmen. Reporting after their first weekend in camp, the Owner enthusiastically announced that spaces “are cozy… but ample and gracious; dark and moody…. but bright and airy.”

CAMILLE U. JOBE, AIA Principal Camille Jobe has practiced architecture for over 25 years, and her experience ranges from commercial and educational spaces, to hospitality and lifestyle projects. A native Texan, Camille’s awareness of architecture came early in her life, having grown up in a house designed by a great architect. Her formal journey to the drawing board began at Texas A&M, where she received her degree in Environmental Design, and later at The University of California at Berkeley where she earned a Master’s Degree in Architecture. Her training in San Francisco influenced Camille’s mature eye for design and keen understanding for how complex and challenging ideas can be built. Camille is a registered architect in Texas and an active leader in the community, including Leadership Austin, The Junior League of Austin, and The Austin Rowing Club. Currently she is serving as the 2020 Treasurer for the AIA Austin chapter. Outside the office, Camille is an avid cook, enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, and rowing on Ladybird Lake with her crew.
ADA I. CORRAL, AIA Principal Ada Corral grew up in Puerto Rico where she began her architecture studies. She graduated with high honors and received a Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Texas at Austin. Ada is a registered architect in the state of Texas since 2005, and received the 2018 Austin Under 40 award for the category of Architecture, Engineering and Construction. In addition to practicing architecture, Ada has held teaching positions at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture and at Austin Community College. A natural leader who was brought up to value service, Ada works professionally and personally to improve the quality of life and the built environment in Austin. She is an alumnus of Leadership Austin’s Emerge program, serves on the Ballet Austin Board of Directors, and is a member of the City of Austin Board of Adjustment. She loves spending time outdoors with her husband and three kids, and her favorite things to do are read and dance ballet.

Diversity and design excellence are showcased in the AIA Austin Homes Tour held every October. In 2020, it's a new world—we know that architecture is best experienced in person, but the current situation calls for radical new ideas. Hugh has been a guest on TALKdesign earlier this year where he discussed his background, his love of architecture and his design philosophy.
Today Hugh takes us through his AIA Austin tour house which happens to be his own home, where as a family they grow and play together.
There is so much you take for granted when you are in your own home and hearing Hugh peel back the layers of his home, the discoveries and stories that make the space unique are fascinating, one of the great things about a renovation is that you are working with history and the society, construction methods and trends of a past time, the older the home the more layers and discoveries you make.

Hugh has had a life long passion for architecture. Since the age of seven he has known that designing buildings was his calling. A native of New Orleans, he started his career in Washington, DC. In 1991 he moved to Austin to study under renowned architect and educator Charles Moore. His practice since then has focused on residential design of all sizes and styles. When he’s not focusing on architecture he enjoys being Dad to his two sons, road trips, constantly renovating his 1939 ranch style house, his wife’s company and catchy pop music.

In 2004, she founded Studio 512, an award-winning architecture and construction firm in Austin. Blair's work has been published extensively, notably her 2015 project The Hive, which was featured in Architectural Record and her 2018 project Lincoln Chapel, which was featured on the cover of Texas Architect. Studio 512 has won AIA awards at both the state and local level and the firm was longlisted for a Dezeen international design award. In 2019, the Texas Society of Architects named Studio 512 one of 10 Emerging Practices to watch, and Blair was included in Elle Decor Magazine's A-list of Architecture as one of the 18 greatest living architects in the world alongside several Pritzker Prize winners. This week I'm joined by Ernesto Cragnolino, a partner of at local firm, Alterstudio and his wife, Krista Whitson an architect at Mell Lawrence Architects. In 2004 the couple saved what's known to be the best work of architect Harwell Hamilton Harris, who built the apartments in the 1950s, from unsympathetic developers. Krista and Ernesto restored the building and in 2013 they strived for it to be a national landmark.
This however is not their AIA Austin Homes tour house, they have generously opened their own home which they designed together in the West Campus neighbourhood of Austin.
Their home was recently featured in Dwell magazine .
Krista Whitson, AIA, holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. Krista has worked at Mell Lawrence Architects for the past two decades. She is interested in all things designed related. Her photography exhibit "Dance Halls of Central Texas" and catalog was supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. She hails from Indiana.
With over 20 years of professional practice, Ernesto Cragnolino has focused on the design of institutional, commercial and residential projects for a variety of clients and at a variety of budgets. Ernesto has taught design and construction at The University of Texas School of Architecture, with an emphasis towards building envelope design and detailing. Ernesto was elevated to the prestigious AIA College of Fellows in 2016. He is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, but grew up in Columbus, Ohio and Long Island, New York.

Prior to founding CHARLES DI PIAZZA ARCHITECTURE in Austin, Charles worked for two internationally recognized offices on projects ranging in size from a carbon-neutral city of 90,000 inhabitants and a skyscraper, to a retail bank branch prototype and an intimate gallery of photographic arts. He has been responsible for all phases of design and has consistently endeavoured to integrate design with nature.
Charles believes buildings can provoke us toward better social interaction, a more open relationship with nature and more productive and upbeat lives. Another of Charles’ interests is sustainability, and toward this goal he strives to contribute toward projects in terms of reduced footprints, recycled materials and minimal energy solutions.
