"The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body is full of light; but when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness. Hebrews 10:23-25

James 5:13-14

God is the one who decides when it's time for each of us to experience a spiritual system upgrade, so we can move forward in the growth in our relationship with Him
"To the week I became weak, that I might win the week; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some." 1 Corinthians 9:22
"The generous man will be prosperous, and he who Waters will himself be watered." Proverbs 11:25
Could it be that the reason you are fighting so hard on life and not seeing any fruit is because you are planted in untamed territory?
Is what you want for your life what you're choosing? Are you choosing to rest and have peace in God's perfect will and timing and harvesting good fruit? Or, are You restless, coming apart at the seams, and find your life in disorder and chaos leading to nothing resembling good fruit?
"To those... who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours to the fullest measure." This is the favored life
Negative fears push away, yet good fears pull us close. Thus, fear of the Lord will draw is closer to Him and to a less dangerous and fearful way of living
How easy it is to get caught up in our own self-sufficiency, which is really not sufficient at all, but a rejection of the true source of everything we need to be holy, productive, and supported in the calling God has put on our lives.
"For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends." 2 Corinthians 10:18
"Respect what is right in the site of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men." Romans 12:17-18
Salt that is useful must be refined, so too for Christians. Being refined is the required process by which we live out our faith and a are useful for kingdom work
Our devotional call is to deny the world and its pursuits, set our eyes on Jesus, and not get distracted by fame, riches, beauty, or accolades, or even fear of the loss of these things.
Giving praise to God is less work than keeping those proclamations bottled up inside us, so why do we choose to bottle it up? Inside we should yearn to live out a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of our lips supplied by God to bring heaven near to us and all who hear our praise.
Stories of people overcoming great obstacles make great movies. We all want to be that person after we know the rest of the story. But, in order to be that person after, we must first be that person before and during the struggle to overcome.
When we allow God to work out things in our lives not only does he get the job done but he also strengthens us, helps us, and keeps us on a righteous path as we trust and rest in His work.
Worship is the creative expression of our faith, and God the Creator, who has made us in His image, calls us to creatively praise and worship Him unique to who He made us.
When we see Injustice we can basically choose to see and respond to the situation from one of two perspectives. The first is that God is pouring out his compassion on those affected by the injustice and we need to join Him in His work. The second is that God has turned his back on the injustice, and we must do something to fill His void.
Our response to God at work can either lead to following Him , making excuses, or complete denial.
If Jesus were to ask you, "What do you want me to do for you?" what would you say? Do you even know what you desire Him to accomplish in you, instead of what you want Him to do in those around you and in your situations?
Walking humbly and lowly as a follower of Jesus is where God can work and make the impossible, possible.
We can observe things, participate in daily activities, basically live life either recognizing God or denying his existence among these things.
Loving God requires action. It requires moving our hearts towards acts of devotion to God instead of the gods of this world, moving ourselves towards prioritizing serving God instead of serving ourselves, moving ourselves towards doing activities that put our lives in alignment with God's law and his will, moving ourselves to speak out in truth in about the injustices of the world, and moving ourselves to physically remove things in our lives that tempt us and draws away from pursuing God with everything we've got.
Who do you run to when you need advice? It may not be a medium or spiritist as mentioned in Isaiah 8, but what about others? We should run to God for all the advice we need, yet others also play an important role in enlightening the advice God gives us.
It is simple and straightforward to categorize people by their choices, but less so by their personal obedience to God. But this becomes a stumbling block that trips us up when we determine faithfulness by righteous pillars.
God working in and through us requires we start with faith, abiding in His peace and grace, being filled with His love, and then sharing it as the Holy Spirit directs.
Our greatest need is hope. But, not just any hope. Rather one that is trustworthy, true, and anchored so firmly we can trust in its holding power.
Perfection. We live in a society that strives for it, pays for procedures to get closer to it, offers self-help books and workouts that help us strive towards it, and we have editing software to touch up photos to fake it or products that promise to magically deliver it, but the problem is that this perfection is imaginary. Thankfully, we can strive with joy for another perfection that is real, true and attainable through Jesus.
When we hear the words "war", "famine", "persecution", and like, our natural inclination is to put up our defenses. To start planning. Or to figure a way out. But Jesus told his disciples there was a better way to react. They were to prepare themselves to go against their natural inclinations and not defend themselves, but let Him do it through them by their testimony.
Diligently pursuing God will always increase our faith, but it will also lead today us to everything our heart and soul desires.
In a world that is shaking and moving under our feet every day, how can live unshaken? Psalm 15 is a good place to lean into truth and recenter our lives so we can stay unshakable.
A sustaining joy food or lives when we willingly allow the excitement of being led by God and living in His presence to move us along through every thing we do.
What are you stumbling over? Un-dealt-with sin is like an obstacle we leave right where we take our daily steps. Just like laundry or toys that clutter a path in a room, unresolved sin can clutter our decisions pathways, our daily routes, and even our ability to walk in joy.
God does for us what we can't do or change on our own. He has the power to step into each of our lives, meet us uniquely where we need him to, work in amazing ways, and He is not limited by time, space, resources, energy, or even other people. This understanding of God is a firm anchor for peace.
"Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, you who serve Him, doing His will." Psalm 103:21. Accessing God's power is a simple, yet as difficult, as releasing our independence and living in service to our God and King through obedience and following His will.
We often feel like we need to posture ourselves properly to pray, but in waiting for pockets of clarity to connect with God we miss out on experiencing God's presence in our turmoil and the peace he can bring in to those places.
Expectations change our behavior and how we pay attention. If we expect the ordinary, we will get the ordinary. If we expect God we will see God.
Deception surrounds us, confusion muddles our thinking and distorts are judgment. Who can we believe? We can believe Jesus, but believing Him isn't the process of adding a new thought or idea to our web of confusion, but allowing that truth to clean out our minds and replace it with a firm foundation of truth.
God does not ask us to live by standards shaped or propagated by human means. Instead He asks is to obey Him in faith and not worry about what our obedience may look like in the eyes of others.
Our part in God's story is to wait, cry out, walk alongside Him, allow Him to move us and change things around us, and not get in the way of what He is working out, which in a self-help/self-made/self-promoting society is very counter-cultural, but required if we don't want to miss out on God's amazing work in our lives.
"We have to get out of our minds that our walk with the Lord is equivalent to skipping through a pastor a beautiful wildflowers and instead except that it is a hard, yet rewarding, climb to a magnificent summit."
These days we don't have a group of "old women" sitting around and sharing juicy gossip in the town square that can pull us away from our pursuit of truth, but we are surrounded by the same type of stories on just about every media source we can tap into with the touch of a button.
As Christians we are to live in love, and our primary place to express that love of God is within community. This is where love should be bursting at the seams, but that love should not be void of truth.
"... it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him." Hebrews 9:27-28. Have you ever wondered what awaits you once you die? If your only reference is cartoons or comics or simplified Bible stories then your facts may be a little askew especially about the account you will give at the time of judgment.
"... to which of the angels has He ever said, 'Sit at My right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?' Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to render service for the sake of those who inherit salvation?" Hebrews 1:3-4. Have you ever considered, that has a child of God, you are constantly surrounded by angels that have a sole purpose, of ministering to you?
In our human state we're easily trapped by temptation and that is why Jesus, in His wisdom, showed us by example how to partner with God to stay on track and fight these temptations with the word of truth.
"... Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, 'God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.' But He turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are stumbling block to Me; for you or not setting your mind on God's interest, but man's.'" Matthew 16:21-23. God's interests at first glance seem harsh and unrealistic but that is only because, just does peter, we are looking at the circumstances his interest create short-term in this world, not the long-term implications of the plan and its eternal significance that goes beyond our comforts, which is usually the chief driving force in our lives and thoughts.
"... what I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, so that with me there will be yes, yes and no, no at the same time? But as God is faithful, our word to you is not yes and no. For the Son of God, Jesus christ, who was preached among you by us...was not yes and no, but yes and Him. For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes, therefore also through him is our Amen to the glory of God through us." 2 Corinthians 1:17-20. The world lies and tells us it has all the answers, but God has a simpler and more grounded way for us to live that always ends and yes and amen.
"For the we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to The obedience of Christ..." 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. Our faith is not just to be needed on our words, but in how we live in direct opposition to the skewed philosophies, social agendas, and celebrated propaganda of untruth we find everywhere in our world.
"For a while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the law, having died to that which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the spirit and not an oldness of the letter." Romans 7:5-6. History has shown us that every human attempt to reach perfection apart from God ends in failure and even though it seems like the more logical and safer way to live in the end all it produces is death.
"But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, 'I will make you jealous by that which is not a nation, by a nation without understanding I will anger you.' And Isaiah is very bold and says, 'I was found by those who did not seek me, I became manifest to those who did not ask for me.' But as for Israel he says, 'All the day long I have stretched out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.'" Romans 10:19-21 God's method of drawing people closer to Him includes raising up people who make non-believers yearn for something better.
"This is the only thing I want to find out from you, did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain if indeed it was in vain? So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you do it by the works of the law, or by hearing with faith?" Galatians 3:2-5. A question we must all ask ourselves on a regular basis is, "Are you pursuing God or just an empty religious practice?"
"For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also, but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as he had said, 'As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest', although his works were finished from the foundation of the world." If God's works were finished from the foundation of the world, who are we to think that we can bring about what is? This is why God reminds us that rest comes by faith.
"When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and of the testimony which they have maintained..." Revelation 6:9. Christian martyrs who've gone before us maintained their testimony to a brutal end, one that God knew they would have and did not interfere to stop, because He knew their witness would be what the next generation of believers needed to maintain their faith when persecution came their way.
"But when he came to his senses, he said, "How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here in hunger!" Luke 15:17. The pursuit of joy, friendship, love, power, and so much more blinds us that we're living a reckless life away from God until our world comes falling apart and we come to our senses that we left the better way.
"The Lord is my portion; I promise to keep your words. I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments." Psalm 119:57-60 God graciously directs us to do our best to stay on the smooth path He has already prepared for us to walk on alongside Him.
"Shout for joy in the Lord, I you righteous! Praise befits the upright. Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done and faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord." Psalm 33:1-5. Praise should look different in each of our lives because God has gifted us each with different skill sets, energy levels, and ways of expressing creativity and connecting with Him.
"But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favor as with a shield." Psalm 5:11-12. Restful refuge requires that we become childlike and hide out in the space that our father has made so we can sing rejoice and exalt in his presence.
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's." Psalm 103:1-5. God's name is holy and worthy to be praised, end of sentence...but God doesn't stop there. He showers is with benefits to the point we can't help but bless His holy name
"He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint, and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:29-31. We find it hard to wait because in our society waiting equates to getting nothing done - procrastinating - laziness, but waiting on the Lord is active waiting, not empty waiting, and it's where God renews our strength.
"For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase in thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:15-18. God knows our hearts are weak and our tendency is to look at the things of the world instead of focusing on him and the greater things he has prepared for us that can't be found in the here and now.
"...I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my speech and my message were not implausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God." 1 Corinthians 2:3-5. It is when we are weak, prone to fearfulness, our knees are knocking, and our words are jumbled that our ability to trust God and still be obedient to His calling that we witness real life Faith to others.
"For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience - by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God - so that from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the Gospel of Christ." Romans 15: 18-19 A convicting gospel message does not come from a well thought out sermon or a biblical self-help list, but rather it's the story that God has given each of us to share from our walk in obedience with Him.
"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and truth, for the father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:23-24 Even the most mundane task can be turned into worship if we allow God's spirit to fill that space and our heart and mind to focus on the truth of the situation.
"The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them. The Lord preserves all who love him but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the lord, and let all flesh bless His holy name forever and ever." Psalm 145:17-21 God is already near, but we can't experience his nearness if we continually push him and his truth away from us.
"With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not send against you. Blessed are you, oh Lord; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I will delight as much as all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word." Psalm 119: 10-16. We can't rejoice in God's ways if our heart and mind are fixed on the end product because we are constant work in progress therefore we must rejoice every step of the way that God walks with us.
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the council of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. And all that he does, he prospers." Psalm 1:1-3 Are you set up to receive what God has to give you listen in to daily Revelations today to learn how to live the blessed life and to be in a position to receive all he has to give you.
Day 3 Precept study of Genesis 47 using cross references. This devotional podcast cross reference is Hebrews 11: 9, 13-16
We may be told that first impressions are important, but God's word reminds us that eternal impressions are far more important. Genesis 23 recounts Sarah's life and death. A woman whose physical beauty we learned in the previous chapters of Genesis left a jaw dropping first impression, but it was her internal beauty that left an account for the ages and reminds us what we look like is much less important than where our life points others.
Living a life of faith involves more than just going through the motions and allowing others to see our good works. Instead, an active faith life requires engagement with the individuals who witness the working out of our faith. Abraham engages with a group of witnesses in Genesis 23, and in doing so, provides us with an example we can copy as we move from having our faith on display to engaging witnesses along our faith journey.
In this world Christians live as strangers and sojourners, just as Abraham did among the people groups God called him to live among. The danger in living in this place, that's not our home, is not so much what others will do to us, but what we will not do because of the fear within us that holds us back from living freely for God in the face of opposition.
What we call ourselves, compared to what God calls us, needs to be kept in constant check because lies easily creep in and cover our true identity in Christ. Genesis 23 reveals a contrast in even how Abraham viewed himself verses the surrounding people, which reminds us that more often than not we are our biggest critic and source of spiraling thoughts abut ourselves.
We often say or pray over others for "traveling mercies," but what does that really mean? Genesis 23 tells of how Abraham required traveling mercies from the people of Hebron because he didn't own land and required a grave site for his wife Sarah. So too when we are in situations where we don't have a home base or we are living on the road, we require mercy from those we encounter on our path so we can do tasks we normally take care of ourselves, but our transient life leaves us unable to do.
Just as God promised Abraham that his obedience would cause long-term benefits, so too does God reward those who obediently follow Him and put their complete trust and faith in the work Jesus accomplished on the cross.
Not only is a path the route that takes us from one place to another, but it also marks and records the steps, twists, and turns we take while getting from one destination to another. Genesis 22 tells of a path of obedience Abraham took in obeying God's command that tested his faith as well as were that path took him, but have you ever considered each of the steps Abraham took as he walked out that obedience, how he explained his obedience to observers, or what he internally battled as he walked out his faith? Today we take a deeper look at this and how it relates to the paths of obedience God has presented to each of us.
We can call a lot of things "worship" but is what we call worship really worship? When you look at the examples provided in the biblical text, Including Genesis 22, 2 Samuel 24, and John 3, God-approved worship has always come with a price attached.
If the world is the classroom of life, then God is our classroom teacher. Every day He calls roll and asks us to respond. Abraham shows an attentive response to God's call and the blessings that follow from his ready response.
When we say we trust, that means we are willing to let go. Abraham shows us what real trust looks like as he follows God's command to give up his most precious possession, his son.
Where is your meeting place with God? What do you do when circumstances upset your regular schedule? Learn from Abraham in Genesis 21 on how to keep a relationship with God going when your meeting place has to change.
Relationships with family, friends, and co-workers can't fill us with what we need to live well and reach the goals God has for us. Instead, these people should be recipients of the overflowing blessings that God pours into our lives. Genesis 21 reminds us of this truth as we read about the exchange between two men who put God at the center of their relationship to provide beyond what they can humanly provide for one another.
Are you feeling overwhelmed or less than adequate to fill the shoes God has asked you to occupy? Good. God never meant for you to carry out His will in your life. Genesis 21 tells of the joy Sarah experienced as God stepped into the void she could not fill and Psalm 126 and Isaiah further instruct and encourage us to live large even when we can't yet see the evidence of what God is going to do to fill the voids in our calling that we can't.
Are you looking for a place to settle, yet life continues to bring transition and change? Maybe you are facing a move, a job change, a child is graduating, you are healing from a difficult relationship, or any other situation that can make us feel very much unsettled. Genesis 21 talks about an unsettling situation that God steps into to show that no matter where we find ourselves we can be settled if we keep our focus on Him and not the disrupted circumstances we find ourselves in.
When you are in charge of keeping a lot of plates spinning and overseeing the plates of others as well, it's easy to miss a few that get dropped or broken. Genesis 21 reminds us that relationships that involve many spinning parts are complex and difficult to navigate when communication isn't constant, but that scheduled reminders can set things right if both parties are willing to see that oversights are not malicious, and can be turned around through regular check-ins.
Proverbs 10:21 tells us that "love covers all transgressions" and 1 Peter 4:8 says that "love covers a multitude of sin," but have you ever wondered just how to love others in this manner? Genesis 20 tells of an exchange that was made to change the appearance of Sarah in the eyes of her family and friends would be cleared. So too has an exchange been made for us to change our appearance, but it doesn't just stop with us but continues as we love others and as God has loved us.
It may sound obvious that traps would in unknown places, but what about the traps we set for others unknowingly? Genesis 20 tells of how Abraham trapped king Abimelech as a means of self-preservation. Likewise, each of us react or act in ways that set traps for people who cross our paths...unless we realize these tendencies and seek God's guidance for developing new patterns in our lives that provide clear paths for those our life intersects with.
When we pray for God to "lead us not into temptation", we realize that this request requires not just God's orchestration of keeping us from sinning, but also having the best intentions in everything we do. Genesis 20 provides an example as we read about king Abimelech and then we see this same truth displayed in 1 Samuel 25 as David is sparred from sinning because he too had good intentions.
We all fall into patterns in relationships, some more so than others, that eventually turn into scripted habits of how we relate to others. Genesis 20 tells of two men and their scripted patterns for dealing with situations that cause more harm than good, which provides us with an outside view of how we also may have scripts we need to be aware of regarding how they are muddling up our relationships.
What do you use to judge other's intentions? First impressions? Or, do you investigate and dig deeper to learn more about others before determining what the motives are behind their actions. Genesis 20 tells how Abraham wrongly misjudged the king of Gerar because he didn't take the time to get to know him and understand his heart for God and his people.
The compassion of the Lord isn't given to us because we are in a good place. Rather, it is a gift God extends to us in terrible places where sin and condemnation hold us, to pull us out and bring us somewhere we can't bring ourselves. Genesis 19 tells of God's compassion towards Lot and his family and we see this theme repeated again and again throughout the Bible text and our own redemption stories.
How we treat others usually stems from everything, but what God says should be the foundation of every relationship...His will. Genesis 19 tells of the birth of two nations who go on to complicate the lives of the nation of Israel. Later on in Numbers and Deuteronomy we get an even clearer picture of the complications that develop between these people groups, and how God's will works out the relationships they have with one another.
We can think we know what is best for both ourselves and others, but usually our thoughts are wrapped up in our arrogance or short-sided perspective of a situation. Genesis 19 tells of three individuals who thought they knew what was best, and by acting on their knowledge instead of the knowledge shared with them from God, they lost their lives and could not live out the best God had prepared for them.
Are you looking for an easy button to help you sail through life? More than likely you have already found them, but the downside of taking the easiest route out of our situations is these actions pull us further away from God and trap us in patterns of sin. Genesis 19 shows how Lot over and over choose the easy button in life and where those choices led him and his family.
Are you struggling with your call to lead? If you are a leader, your calling requires having followers. In fact, we see a person in a leadership position without followers as a judge rather than a leader, as we learn from the story of Lot in Genesis 19.
Are you looking for God to speak more into your life? Or maybe you fear if you ask Him to speak you won't be able to bear what He has to tell you. Genesis 18 tells of a conversation God has with Abraham about His plans regarding Sodom and Gomorrah. Through this exchange and a cross-reference to John 16, we gain insight into both ends of the relational spectrum we can have with God and how He meets us where we are at every time He comes near.
Every day God asks us to enter into fellowship with Him. How do you respond to His invitation? Do you scramble to find a quiet place, prepare your heart, and set aside time for Him? Genesis 18 provides us with a beautiful window into Abraham's relationship with God, how prepared and took the time to talk as well as listen.
Comparison keeps us trapped from living out the autonomous life God has created for each of us to show His excellence to the world because it drives us towards average instead of our chosen calling. Genesis 18 tells how God has set apart Abraham and Sarah and their son and grandsons, each for a specific purpose, based on God's kindness, tolerance, and patience for each of their unique lives and callings.
In a society where we turn towards demographics, define people by their population segment, and judge others before we get to know them, God's character provides a countercultural example for living. Genesis 18 tells of Abraham confronting God for uncharacteristically grouping the wicked with the righteous, which plays out a scenario that shows God sees, and he sees beyond the masses into each of our lives and hearts.
Are you doing your best to be a good Christian? Follow religious rules so you can please God? Genesis 18 shows us that Abraham was living this same way, and yet he wasn't seeing any fruit and the process was becoming wearisome and frustrating. Thankfully God showed Abraham a better way to live that would not wear him down or be frustrating.
Have you ever tried to change your name? As we dig further into Genesis 17 to look at this chapter in the bigger picture of God's truth we see that there are many names we call ourselves that He doesn't call us, and how difficult it can be to bring what we name ourselves into alignment with what He calls us.
Digging into Genesis 17 with day 4 of our study, using the Precept method of looking at the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of this chapter and seeing how God believes the best in all of us, even when we haven't done a thing.
Scaling a mountain, physical, mental, or spiritual, requires overcoming obstacles when the terrain gets difficult. But, if we hope to reach the summit, then we must allow the obstacles on the lower part of our path to increase our grip strength so we don't slip when our path becomes more steep and the weariness of the journey sets in. Genesis 17 talks about a summit for the decedents of Abraham and their need to hold on, and in the same manner Revelations 21 talks about the summit before every Christian.
Who doesn't want their life to be filled with God's blessings day after day? God wants the same for us too. We just need to move from wanting to being willing. Genesis 17 tells of God's desire to abundantly bless Abraham and his decedents, but He tells Abraham what is necessary for each generation to do to keep the chain of blessing going to show they are willing to follow His commands for blessings and this example parallels what God calls all believers within the new covenant.
No matter what God has shown you He has planned for your life, it is not up to you to figure out how to make it happen. God instead provides us detailed instruction and everything else we need to accomplish the mission He has given us. Genesis 17 tells of a plan God has for Abram and Sarai that will completely change their lives, as well as detailed instructions for carrying it out and everything they needed. He left nothing up to them, except to follow the instructions He had included.

How are you gauging success? Do you base it relative to what we would call the "average life"? Planning for an average life-span, expecting average life circumstances, working towards average career goals, and even targeting an average retirement age? Unfortunately, this way of thinking takes our eyes off the unique plan God has for each of our lives. Genesis 16 reminds us through the life story of Abram and Sarai that God does not want us to set our eyes on average, but on Him and the un-average life we can live for His glory.

When things are not going as we like, or the fallout from our actions produces results we would rather not take credit for, the natural inclination is to blame someone else instead of owning up to our failure. Genesis 16 shows us how Sarai blames both God and her husband for her life circumstances, yet both redirect her to the truth of her situation resulted from her own failures.

We live in a world where more decisions are made from reactions to feelings, opinions, situations, and societal pressures than out of proactive choices formed from a desire to love and extend compassion. Genesis 16 shows us that this trend is nothing new, but that there is a way to live counter-culturally by trusting in God over our natural reactions.

In a perfect world we would have no skeletons in our closets and nothing we were ashamed to admit about ourselves, but we do not live in a perfect world and we all have things about our past, and even present, we would rather not share with others. Genesis 16 reminds us that even if we are good enough at keeping secrets hidden from others, we can't hide them from the God who sees all and who actually transforms our shames into victory and then asks us to declassify them as part of our testimony of His grace and love.

What do you do when your life, or the life of someone you love, is in a holding pattern? Do you try to find a place to land and get to your destination by other means, or do you hold tight to God's purpose in the waiting? Genesis 16 reminds us that the human tendency is to divert when waiting is required, but God asks we fight against that temptation and stay holding onto His promises that are never late in coming.

The benefits that come along with being a child of God are endless, but there is one benefit in this package that outshines them all. Genesis 15 highlights this benefit, as well as showcases our human tendency is to forget it is there for us to take advantage of.

When we doubt and fear that things will not happen in our lives, the lives of those we love, or even in our business dealings, we can fear. In these times, God reminds us He is our shield, that in the end will help us persevere through our doubts and fears and towards His promises. Genesis 15 reminds us of this, and in looking more closely at the purpose of a shield in battle, we can learn some practical truths on how to live in faith with God as our shield.

It is hard to trust and have faith when we don't have evidence. The bible provides us various examples of men who asked God, "How will I know?" In looking at theses examples in Genesis 15, Judges 6, and Luke 1 we can learn a lot about how to step forward in faith truly knowing God will follow through, even when the evidence of what is yet to come is unknown.

When we dream, pray and anticipate our children's futures, we don't yearn for trials in their lives because we think they would be stopping blocks in God's plan for them. In Genesis 15 we are reminded that trials are actually the way God brings about His purposes and that we need to be okay with the adversity our children will face in their lives and pray into and through it as parent.

It is easy to give into doubt when we don't see things unfolding in our lives like we expected...especially when it comes to promises from God we are waiting to be fulfilled. Genesis 15 provides us with an example of how our doubts in God's promises can be turned into trust and not only that, but a righteous standing with God.

With our world being completely upended a year ago, we can find it even more difficult to navigate the downward spiraling issues that are part and parcel of living. Genesis 14 talks about "...in the days of..." conflict in a particular region and in the same way we are going to look back and talk about "…in the days of ...Covid..." What we have to say about this time rests on how we handle an uncertain future in the here and how while still holding onto hope for life eternal.

Within community, conflict happens. But we have a choice on how to deal with conflict. One choice is prudent, while many others are not. Genesis 14 provides an example of a community in conflict and how various people were affected, or unaffected, by the crossfire because of the way they dealt with the conflict.

When God appoints someone to be in a place of leadership, whether we agree or disagree with His appointment, He calls us to honor that person and their position. Genesis 14 tells about an appointed priest who God raised up and Abram honored for no other reason than the appointment God had given to this man. As we look deeper into this exchange by referencing Hebrews 7, we learn more on how we too can honor those God appoints to lead and guide His people.

Living a simple life doesn't mean we discard everything and live as a minimalist. Instead, simple living is about knowing both our identity and purpose have nothing to do with us, but with God, the Great Creator and Owner of all things. Genesis 14 tells us how Abram lived the simple life by finding his identity and purpose in God, and Psalm 91 gives us specific ways we too can live this simplified life in the shadow of of God.

In a task oriented world, we often choose to do and prioritize our choices and actions because of what they will accomplish or how they will get us ahead. This may seem productive and smart, but in God's economy our choices and priorities should be based instead on relationships. Genesis 14 chronicles the choices and priorities Abram makes because of his relationships and how peace and God's will were consistent as he chose this way over the way of the world.

With today being Good Friday, it seems strange that the "good" of this day is the death of our Savior on a cross. That is why it is important to put our perception of good and evil into context of God's redemption story and the greater purpose of the ultimate defeat of the wickedness in this world. Genesis 13, 2 Peter 2, and Luke 23 help us focus on this bigger picture so we can truly call today good.

Because we don't always follow God's plan perfectly, we need resets that pull us back to where we got off track. Genesis 13 includes an example of how God reset Abram on the right pat. This mercy God extended towards Abram parallels the mercy He shows through the Easter story, and His willingness to step in and reset the path of anyone who has gone astray and needs to realign their life again with Him.

We may not have stone altars in our homes or yards or have access to sacrificial animals, but this doesn't mean our lives are void of the opportunity to sacrifice to God. Genesis 13 references altar building at a settled location, just as in previous chapters and helps us realize that within the settled boundaries of our lives we still have modern altars that offer our greatest commodity, time.

From the perspective of eternity, with our eyes set on the inheritance God has promised us in His kingdom, we can't allow ourselves to get stuck in focusing on the spaces we or those around us occupy in this world. Genesis 13 tells of how Lot goes to occupy the land to the east and as he leaves God tells Abram not to focus on where Lot is going or even where Abram's feet currently touch the ground, but to look beyond, to the promises yet ahead God has willed for his ownership.

Peace with others requires give and take, but in a self-centered society we see more taking than giving. Genesis 13 provides a wonderful model for living in peace with others, but it requires giving that trusts in God's ability to provide and fill in our losses when we give up the best for the benefit of another.

Religious thinking can often cheat us of the joy God desires in our lives because we do not view our perception of holiness from God's perspective. This self-denying approach to life steals away our ability to enjoy what God has given us because we are always looking for the catch that reveals what we really deserve. Genesis 12 shows of an instance where Abram reveals his own insecurities and ability to trust God with the beauty God has placed in his life.

Mission is movement and thus stalling out has no place when we are on a mission, but many times we allow things to put us into holding patterns instead of continuing forward. Genesis 12 tells of a famine that caused Abram to stall out on his mission and lose forward momentum. And while a famine may not be throwing me or you off course, there are other things that creep into our lives that we need to be aware of and know how to press through so we don't get off track and lose momentum in the mission God has for our lives.

We use the word "blessed" as we talk about our faith, and many of us even have décor in our homes referencing it. But what does it really mean to be blessed? And how is it we live blessed and bless others? Genesis 12 starts with God telling Abram he will be blessed and he will be a blessing to the families of the earth, but as we look further into Acts and Galatians we gain a greater understanding of what being "blessed" truly is and how we can live it and give it.

It is easy to worship God when things are easy and going well in our lives. In fact, it's when life gets hard and fear clouds our thinking that worship becomes necessary to stand in faith, do the hard things, and press through the places we would rather run from. Genesis 12 gives us a peek into Abram's early walk with God as a fair weather worshiper. This story should give us all hope when we struggle to stand in faith because just as God transformed Abram into a pillar of faith for generations to follow, so too can He do the same thing in each of our lives.

How are you doing with fitting everything you need into your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly schedule? There are lots of methods for planning and make the most efficient use of our time, but in the end, none of them are perfect...except for one. Genesis 12 starts off with God calling Abram to Canaan from Haran with the simple instructions, "I will show you..." The simple method of asking, "What next God?" is how we not only live for God but also make the most efficient use of our days.

Builders use a variety of conventional and unconventional materials, but God, the master builder, uses the most unconventional, unstable, and fluid material that exists to build His kingdom...the human heart. Genesis 11 provides us with this comparison contrast, as does the rest of the bible. What's most amazing though is the fact that when we allow God to build His kingdom with our hearts, His structure is stronger than any earthly building.

Getting somewhere is great, but do you spend so much time focused on your destination that the lessons of the journey get lost in your pursuit of the finish line? What if going in circles is exactly what you need to get the take aways you need for the path God has laid out for your life? Genesis 11 lays out the road map taken by Shem, the oldest son of Noah, and his decedents from and back to their original launching point after the flood. There are lessons we can all learn from the journey taken by this family and God’s use of their path so they could receive the lessons needed to keep walking with Him in faith.

How is it that truth can so easily slip through our fingers? One minute we have a clear understanding and then the next it is gone. The issues aren't with the truth itself, but what we are doing with it once we have given it to us. Why do you do what you do to cultivate relationships, decorate your home, aspire to various business interests, pursue better health, and invest in specific interests of your children? It all boils down to the underlying motivations that drive how and where we invest our energy and devote our time. Genesis 11 reminds us that unchecked, these motivations can lead us away from God's purposes and result in wasted time and resources, eventually leaving us nothing to show for our efforts.

Whether we know it or not, many times we choose to settle down in painful places instead of pursuing the beautiful life God wants us to live. This movement forward requires faith, forgiveness, and leaning into God's strength that goes beyond what we can muster up ourselves. Genesis 11 shares the story of Tereh whose son Haran died and how the loss of his son kept him from fulfilling his calling to enter the land of Canaan because he could not lean into God for forward momentum to push beyond the pain into the promises God had ready for him and his family.

Whether God directs us to stay in one place or to pack up and go, His purpose always underlies His directions. God has a way of using loving pushes to keep us moving forward. These pushes keep us from allowing stagnation to set in and creativity and growth halt. Genesis 10 provides us reminders that God’s loving pushes are sometimes subtle and other times extreme. Either way, the goal of these pushes is to move us out of reach of the things that are behind so we can instead focus on the things that are ahead.

Life is filled with distractions and deceptions which take our eyes off what's most important. No matter how hard we try, on our own we cannot sort through these things, but God provides simple instruction on how to clear our vision and see His path that leads to life. Genesis 10 points us to Isaiah 66 and these instructions, and that's where we focus our study for today.

Placemaking is what we do when we dwell somewhere. In these places we can either establish worldly or heavenly kingdoms. Genesis 10 lists many kingdom places created by Noah's lineage that came and went in a worldly fashion except one. The only kingdom that withstood the test of time, is the eternal kingdom of God, passed through the lineage of Shem to Jesus to us.

Our heritage and legacy depend on the lines we draw in our lives. We define these lines by the boundaries we set in the places we inhabit, the location of those places, how we allow the experiences in those places to affect us, and how we live to affect the lives of those around us. Genesis 10 tells of the linage of Noah and his sons and how they distinctly divided themselves into these categories as they grew from family units to large nations, a legacy that determined their usefulness or uselessness to God's overarching plan for humanity.

Falling into sin is exactly that, a fall into a trap and ensnares us into behaving sinfully. But these falls can be prevented. Genesis 9 and Joshua 9 both tell stories of sinful traps set by the same lineage and how God's people foolishly allowed themselves to fall into sin by letting their guard down and not seeking wisdom in how to navigate their steps.

We all make mistakes, so how is it we can still honor someone who has let us down or messed up? The answer is we honor the person, not their choices. Genesis 9 shares a story of a father who made a poor choice, and how his children responded. One dishonors him and the other two honor. So too, we have the choice to honor or dishonor others when we see their failings and then respond. In the end, we either allow God's covering over that person's failure or hold it back in unforgiveness.

What captures and holds your attention mostly each day? Is it the things that are manmade or those that our Creator put on this earth to reflect His glory? Genesis 9 reminds us that something we may take for granted after a rainstorm, the rainbow, was placed with a purpose and Ezekiel 1 further explains how this bow of colorful light reflects God's radiance and beckons us to fall on our knees in awe of the God of creation.

Without blood, we can't live. The blood in our bodies connects our organs and helps them work together and keep us alive. Genesis 9 has four verses that remind us that in the same way that blood connects our body, our relationships with God and others are interconnected and necessary for living.

It is easy to get down on ourselves when we mess up and don't live the "perfect Christian" life. But God doesn't get down on us during these times, instead His word reminds us that our perfection completely rests on Him. Genesis 9 reminds us of God's desire to step into our imperfect world and lives and live out His perfect standards despite our sinful tendencies.

No one is immune to suffering, especially Christians. Why? Because suffering has a purpose to shake us up and remake us better. Genesis 8 draws us into Noah's story, where his suffering led him to be a remade man. Today we look at some wisdom shared from Peter about suffering and discern how this year long shaking of our world by an epidemic is something God can use to remake us, His people, each into more perfected, conformed, strengthened, and established followers.

What are you waiting for to start ______________? Whatever you fill that blank with, it is a good question to ask then God is asking you to follow Him in faith to get going, but all you can do is think of excuses why you shouldn't get started right way. Genesis 8 is clear through the example of Noah that God doesn't need us to wait for things to be perfect to use us, He just needs us to get our and get going with what we have. That's what living in faith is all about. About following God in the here and now, not when things look good from our perspective.

We live in a world where promises mean little. Contracts broken, marriages annulled, agreements disputed...but God works differently. Genesis 8 ends by God stating that there will be things He ensures will happen in this world and they are unbreakable by anyone. Then in Jemimah we learn that God's list of unbreakable promises, His Covenant promises to His people, reaches beyond Genesis 8 and into the everyday fabric of our lives.

When moments of rest present themselves while you are in a time of waiting, what do you do? Do you rest in that moment or pace away the moments, hoping you will start moving again and no longer in need of rest? Genesis 8 tells us about two birds Noah released to determine how much time they had left to wait for the flood waters to recede. The actions of these birds had a lot to teach us about our own nature, the choices we have while in a waiting season, and the benefit of returning and resting in safe and secure love of God.

What is the first thing you think of doing when you are weary and worn out from a long journey or hard trial? Probably not taking time to worship God, but that's exactly what our body, mind and spirit need to be replenished, renewed, and strengthened. Noah's example in Génesis 8 reminds us that when we are weary, the best thing to do is worship.

It is easy to accumulate more than we need, but more difficult to sort through we should keep and what should go. This can be true with physical possessions, relationships, and even spiritual strongholds. The command of God Noah followed in Genesis 7 was to take only what was necessary, because that was all there was capacity for in the ark. In the same way, God speaks into our lives regarding what we have the capacity to keep and what must be left behind.

Being prepared for a storm requires more than just a quick run to the grocery store and gas station. Likewise, being prepared for the final storm, the return of Christ, takes more effort than glimpsing at a daily devotional. Genesis 7 along with the gospels of Matthew and Luke provide adequate warning that a storm is coming and we best do everything necessary to be prepared for the storm of all storms that will shake our world to the core.

We all have a tendency to keep our options open when we start towards a new adventure, so we have a way to escape if things should go awry, but following God doesn't allow for a back door. In faith, just as Noah in Génesis 7, we are called to be all in and that commitment eventually leads us to experience the fulfillment of the wonderful promises God has planned for our lives.

It often feels like there is not enough time in a day to get everything done, so to get ahead of the urgent we often sacrifice what seems unnecessary. But, in rushing ahead of God and not taking time for rest, relationships, and His perfect timing for projects and plans to happen, we forgo a better way to live that God ensures us leaves enough time for everything just as we learn in Genesis 7 and the 100 years Noah had to build the ark and it was completed on the exact day they were ready to enter the ark as the flood came.

To run the race of life with endurance, we unavoidably have to go over various hurdles, some that are unmovable that we must strive to overcome and others we must learn to recognize as movable and destroy before they consume the energy we need for the unmovable ones. Genesis 6 and Hebrews 11 remind us that Noah set an example for us on how to run a race of faithful endurance by destroying movable hurdles.

Even if we hope for the best when trusting another person to make wonderful choices with an opportunity we have afforded them, these open doors may not materialize into the result we hoped for us or that other person and there comes a point when the door must be shut and a change of plans made. Genesis 6 provides us with a view of God's desired hope for humanity, the opportunity He provided for them to turn from sin and walk with Him in righteousness, but unfortunately that open door was used by only one man, Noah, so instead the door needed closing and alternative plan was put into action.

Viruses we tend to focus on are those that affect the body. But there is an even more invasive virus that spreads by similar means and corrupts the soul. Genesis 6 provides us a description of a society affected by this second type of virus that when looked at more closely using cross-referenced scriptures in Psalms, Proverbs, and Romans we see there is a cure, but one that requires consistent treatment.

Our body is a vessel with great potential for good or evil. What determines the difference in what manifests on the outside has to do with what the vessel holds inside comes from years of choices on what to keep and what to let go. Genesis 6 is a reminder that humans hold on to more evil than good, and that accumulation eventually leads to our own undoing and separation from God, unless we live consistently in check with God.

Family trees come in all shapes and sizes, but our earthly ones have some definite deficits. On the other hand, God's family tree is not only perfect, it's one that anyone can be part of. Genesis 5 is the starting record of God's family tree, which is then continued in Genesis 11 and Matthew 1, but the most exciting record is in Galatians 3, which reminds us we have a place on this tree as well.

It is easy to get discouraged, point finger and blame when our life situations are hard and a seemingly easier and more restful life is just out of our reach. But discouragement is a mindset. Genesis 5 provides us with examples of two individuals who faced the same situation, one choosing to find rest and peace within his less than perfect life and the other blaming God for his predicament. What distinguished the one from the other was how they looked at their situation.

In our western culture, we are far removed from the societal practice of offering physical sacrifices to gods. Thus, we can think we're doing well in worshipping and living a life for God, while in reality we are not. Genesis 4 provides two examples of sacrifice and how one is regarded by God and the other is not, and the difference in the two came down to a simple choice in what to offer.

We may not like these facets of life, but they are the reality we must face in a fallen world. Lust is a strong word that we equate to leading to specific sins, but in a biblical context it is the basis for every sin. Genesis 3 provides us the first example of lust as Eve delights and desires forbidden fruit, but that was only the beginning of examples of our human nature to desire eventually what will be our undoing instead of pursuing what would lead us to a rich and full life in God.

It is hard to fathom how everything God created in the brief beginning of the heavens, earth and the hosts of heaven to contain everything needed for every person's life to live out His purposes. We follow in His footsteps as we continue to use the raw materials He has given us to make new things. Of course we don't do this as perfectly as God, but there is a desire within each of us to refine creation following the example God gave us in Genesis 2.

God created humans to connect with one another through relationships. Not superficial connections, but ones that require us to expose who we really are to one another and yet find acceptance, love, and belonging. Genesis 2 reminds us of this truth, which stands in stark contrast to the superficial communities we hide in instead.

Rest is not just good for our bodies, but it is necessary for our souls. Without rest, we start to hyper-focus on the things we deem important in our life instead of the blessed and sanctified work God has done in our lives and continues to work out as we put our faith and trust in Him. Genesis 2 and Hebrews 4 remind us that rest is something we must be diligent to enter and how to incorporate this practice into our lives.

Have you ever prayed about something you felt God placed on your heart to dream and hope for, only to still be waiting or for it to completely change into something you had not expected? In these times we can feel like something went wrong. Genesis 2 brings us a reminder that God plants seeds in advance of His plan for growing them and at the perfect time He sends the rain so they can sprout and grow.

Living is more than just getting by, more than just occupying a space, and more than pressing through one day after another. To live abundantly, we must cultivate and invest in all that our life intersections with. Genesis 2 goes beyond the chronology of creation from Genesis 1 to remind us that this earth isn't just a house where we drop our things and squat out our existence, but a home where we can live abundantly if we choose to work at cultivating everything God has given us.

From the beginning, the earth yielded fruit for man and every living creature, but there was a slight difference in the sources. Human food was to have seeds, while animal food could come from any plant. We uncover the importance of this distinction in throughout the pages of the bible as God reveals His Seed and the necessity of seedy food to sustain us spiritually.

In the age of helicopter parenting, it is hard to fathom that God has never hovered over humankind to ensure we stay within the boundaries He set for us, learning the lessons He desires for us to learn, or even taking care of the things He has given us. Genesis 1 and Psalm 8 are glorious reminders to us all that God's parenting style is based on trust and a loving relationship that He desires we reciprocate towards Him and those around us.

By nature, every one of us is forgetful and unable to remember exactly what we have done, said, and experienced with complete accuracy. For this reason we take pictures, record videos, buy souvenirs, and write in journals. In Genesis 1 we see a similar recording written to provide the reader of the clarity of a very good beginning and how it unfolded.

If God is good all the time, why it is that we can't see consistent goodness in our lives? The reality of goodness is that it is cumulative and too often we only focus on seeing the end product of goodness instead of the smaller "good things" that God brings together to ultimately create something that is "very good." Genesis 1 reminds us that God has been working "good" things into "very good" outcomes since the beginning of time.

God is not a taskmaster with a set of rules in His one hand and a rod of disciple in His other. Instead, He is the source of truth who invites us to discover, learn and grow in truth as we immerse ourselves in knowing Him more. 1 John 5, John summarizes his letter that God's invitation to all believers is to be lifelong learners in knowing Him who is true that in doing so we are deceived by the lies of the world and miss out on an eternal life of learning and growing in truth.

New year's resolutions center on planning a better future for ourselves and those we love, but can be short-sided if they lack the wisdom, insight, and understanding needed to get to the heart of our struggles. Thankfully, God has provided us a means for refinement that centers on one resolution all believers can pursue, sanctification. 1 John 5 refers to these heart struggles that God refines through sanctification as "sin not leading to death" yet instead to eternal life in Jesus if we resolve to go through the refining process instead of turning away from it.

Looking back at this past year, what evidence do you think your words and actions left for others to see a testimony of a Christian life and a heart of praise? What if you were to ask those closest to you to confirm this evidence? Would they agree or disagree with you? 1 John 5 talks about the confirmed testimony of God and the evidence of that testimony in those who believe in the Son of God as a reminder to all believers that living out our faith is the greatest testimony we have that God is truth and life.

Have you ever been so distracted that you didn't even hear what someone was saying directly to you? Hearing requires focus on one who is talking and on the topic, thus to really hear we must connect with the person talking not just be within earshot. 1 John 4 reminds us that hearing from God works the same way and if we want to ensure we aren't missing out from what He wants to tell us we need to stay connected to Him and not give in to the distractions of the world. What a fitting message to hear on Christmas eve when a multitude of distractions can pull us away from the perfect birthday celebration for Jesus our Savior.

We often look at the 'holy family' as an example of perfection, but in reality Mary and Joseph were not perfect, only their son, Jesus, was. Instead, these parents allowed God to work through their lives, and parenting imperfections, to allow God to manifest Himself in them. John, in 1 John 4 talks about "the love of God made manifest in us," and later in his gospel letter he references Jesus on how parents, children, and really every believer can be used by God to manifest Himself in this world, in our less than perfect lives.

The evening of Jesus' birth, God assembled a rather motley (and smelly) celebratory crowd, a group of shepherds. Unfortunately, our modern day reenactments of this scene removes the realistic elements needed to understand a key lesson John was teaching in 1 John 4, that we can't love an unseen God until we love others no matter what they smell like or the baggage they bring with them to our fellowship.

The wise men who traveled to seek the king connect with a star foretold in their ancient texts were not wise because of what they knew, but because of what they did with the knowledge they were given. John, in the 4th chapter of 1 John, uses repetition of what he has already addressed in this letter to remind his readers of this very thing, that knowing good from evil is not enough. To be truly wise, they must actively test everything so they can live wisely.

Charities receive most of their donation in December, which is fitting as part of our season of giving traditions. But John reminds the followers of Christ in his letter that giving is to be a continuous practice based on a simple 3 step method which assures our hearts, and minds, that what we give will encourage the faith of both the giver and the gift recipient.

The events of 2020 have left most of us weary, Thankfully God's provided for our weariness and composer Adolphe Adam wraps up a description of this provision so well in one verse of the traditional Christmas song, O Holy Night. Referencing 1 John 3 while looking at this specific verse in O Holy Night, we can gain a greater appreciation for the words both men wrote to remind us we can relieve our weariness by abiding in God.

The story of Rudolph centers on seeking out a purpose amid opposition, even when others don't understand or include us. So too, as "children of God" we must live out our purpose when others consider us outcasts and strange for living out our walk with God. John recounts the words of Jesus in 1 John 3 of this very fact and reminds us that this lack of love from the world is part of the Christian journey.

The traditional Christmas song, The 12 Days of Christmas is unusual, but when you dig into the history and symbolism, it unveils a series of gifts that our true love, God, has given to all followers of Christ. 1 John 3 talks about this love relationship and how it should be lived unveiled and as the melody that resonates from how we live out our walk with God.

Just as it is easy to figure out who is on which side in the battle between the mice and toy soldiers in Nutcracker, 1 John 3 states that it should be obvious for us to discern who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil. Jesus is the hero of this heavenly battle and His coming to earth was for a single purpose, "to destroy the works of the devil" and granting the children of God the ability to enjoy the endless days of discovery and joy that lay beyond the battle and into eternity with Him.

Those lovely Christmas card photos of friends and family we receive this time of year highlight the best features and moments of those we love. Sugar cookies are simple and sturdy canvases, just like simple faith is a sturdy canvas for God's work in our lives. 1 John 2 talks about how the basic recipe of faith that God had provided His followers was being changed and resulting in an inferior faith that didn't meet the basic standards of the original recipe.

It may not seem like there is a cold-hearted green guy lurking over our lives, bent on stealing our joy, but the Bible is clear such a spirit exists - the antichrist. His goal is to not only steal the joy for the reason of this season, but all seasons of life. 1 John 2 talks about this deceiver and the lies he desires to propagate, but also the tactic of believing that God has provided to help us walk in faith and not by sight.

Most children do not worry about getting coal in their stockings, but as adults we often shrink back from awaiting "gifts" from our heavenly Father because of the shame of past sins. Fortunately, Jesus has provided us a way to coal-proof our lives and thus John in 1 John 2 reminds us we must approach the gift-filled life God has given us with confidence and not let the fear of judgement hold us back from the best God want to give us.

Even though Santa's litmus test on how he seemingly judges children is relative to an unspoken gauge of right and wrong, God provides explicit instructions on how we can know if our life is keeping to His teaching. 1 John 2 tells us what the true Christian litmus test is, and how we can use it catch our sinful patterns and be more consistent in living out our faith.

Over the years, our family has gone back and forth on whether to buy a real tree or put up our fake one. If our fake tree didn't look so real, I don't think my family would be as hesitant, but since it does and it is just easier to bring it down from the attic already covered in lights, we often opt for the fake. Unfortunately, we can play out this same scenario with fake reality we entertain in our daily lives. John wrote the letter of 1 John to counteract the human tendency to lean towards false realities and warn followers of Christ for the need to consistently view the things in our lives through the lens of truth so we can determine what is real and what is fake.

God is the ultimate decorator. He transforms any and every thing with just a word. John introduces us to this Word made flesh in 1 John 1, describing Him as a radical demonstration of what a life transformed by God looks like, but he doesn't stop there. Instead, John proceeds to in his gospel to that Jesus' work started in creating a beautifully decorated home for us on earth and is still in process as His decorating process continues until He returns to bring us to our eternal home.

If you have ever walked through a Christmas light display, you know that it is an immersive experience, transporting you out of the chaos and struggles of your day-to-day life. 1 John 1 talks about a similar experience that is the core of the Christian walk and the essence of the message we have to share with others who feel trapped in darkness and uncertainty.

Christmas lights fill our homes and flood our neighborhoods with brilliant displays. And while these lights bring our family together before a fire, around a lit tree, or huddled together in a warm car taking in yards and houses flooded with Christmas lights, they pale compared to the God of Light and the fellowship His light provides. 1 John 1 talks about this fellowship of light and how to maintain it as we continue our walk with God and with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The season of joy, Christmas, is upon us. Joy in the decorating, in the gift-giving, in the baking, and in the rest of the activities that come along with this seaon...at least that is the message we hear loud and clear from the world. But John shares a different message in John 1 about a better, a complete joy, that is ours to have and gift to others, no matter what the season.

When our efforts are thwarted, missions sidetracked, good deeds are unnoticed, and relationships torn apart, we can feel defeated. Yet, as a follower of Christ, we are to remember that even among these setbacks we are bearers of the Lord's victory. James 5 refers to the Lord of Sabaoth, which stands for the Lord of the armies who bear the title of victors who have been given a mission that will succeed.

What we all need more than anything as we wrap up 2020 and face the uncertainties of 2021 with continued COVID-19 concerns is encouragement to endure, or live out patience with action. James concludes his letter in chapter 5 with just such a message that can help us all in fleshing out how to continue living out our faith, no matter what lays ahead for us to endure.

You have probably heard before that prayer doesn't change God, rather it changes us. In a way that is true because if we are intent on praying effective prayers, we need a heart change. So which must come first? The heard prayer or the change in us? What James teaches us in chapter 5 is that the change in us must come first, but thankfully scripture also backs up the truth that this change is a work of God, for which we must pray and will ourselves to to be open to what needs changing.

Have ever felt imprisoned by your schedule, to-do list, or a controlling person? When James speaks about oaths in chapter 5 these are the arrangements he is warning against over business contracts or developing relationships with people who may not agree with our beliefs but respect ours. Today we look at the Greek words and tenses used in verse 12, to gain a clearer understanding why James starts this verse with "above all" and the importance of following this truth has on our walk of faith.

Dieting of any sort requires endurance, but restricting our will to take control of our lives and stay steadfast in our faith proves even more difficult because the results are not usually immediate, and may not even be realized in our lifetime. James 5 talks about this faith-based diet and the patience, endurance, and suffering needed to keep from being "fattened" on the things of this world instead of God's perfect diet that keeps us in prime shape for His kingdom and purposes.

Jealousy is not a word we naturally would equate with good, but it is with God's jealousy for us because it works to rid our hearts of the idols of this world. James 4 talks about this jealousy, but that's not the only place in the Bible you will find text related to this attribute of God and how His jealousy is at work continually to overthrow the idols that vie for our attention over His rightful place as the King of our heart.

We do not forge our closest relationships from safe distances. Instead, they are developed as we interact with others in and through the messy places of our lives and commit to knowing and loving another person so we can grow a deeper attachment and stronger bonds of friendship and love. James 4 reminds us that knowing God through relationship is vital to our faith and follows the example He provides each of us by loving us and knowing us through each of our messy places.

Are you looking to better your life? I'm not talking about the one here and now, but your eternal life. James 4 warns us that there is a difference between the two and why it is so important we do not get stuck in trying to fix our circumstances in this life because in doing so we ultimately miss out on the better things God desires to give us as an eternal gift for our endurance, faith, and trust in Him through them.

When it comes to a relationship with God, we can either choose friendship or war, there are no in-between. James 4 is clear on this and yet what is not so clear is the way we seek the world's friendship daily to comfort us, provide us acceptance, and give us opportunities where we feel included. Today we look to Philippians to add to this text so we can choose a better way, friendship with God and His perfect comfort, acceptance, and inclusion.

Just as we ask our children to give us a wishlist of things they would like for Christmas, God asks us to give Him our wishlists. The bible teaches us He, Our Father, is the giver of good gifts, but as James 4 reminds us, we must remember we can't compare the gifts our Father gives us with the gifts with others or set our hearts on taking their gifts just because we didn't ask Him for any gifts or we can't see the goodness in the gifts God has given us.

The tongue is a powerful tool or weapon, depending on how we use it. Unfortunately, the easiest use of the tongue is to let sparks of destruction fly, which spread quickly into all the other areas of our lives. James 3 addresses the use of the tongue in depth, so today we dig into that subject more and what God has to teach us about His solution to controlling this seemingly untamable part of our body.

Whether you are looking towards a promotion in your job, into the next stage of life, or in your overall lifestyle, there are costs to be considered with each of these "upgrades." Do you struggle in living among people who seem ignorant and foolish in their attitudes and actions? There is explicit instruction in the Bible on how to live wise in a foolish world, but it's counter-cultural to the ways we would naturally use to silence the ignorance of truth in others. Today I explore a series of Bible verses that speaks to how Christians are to live towards those on the outside in "gentle wisdom" which God uses to accomplish greater work than we could do through our own self-directed actions.

What we say is not a direct product of our minds, but our hearts. So, eve;n when we know we shouldn't say or write something, we let words come out of us we later regret. James 3 addresses this issue in great detail and provides insight into how we are to redirect our arrogant hearts, so what we say and write is wise and fruitful.

A song I grew up singing in church had the words "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me." And while that may not be a verse from the bible it is the premise that James is teaching in James 3 regarding how peace starts with us; not how we can manufacture it, but rather how we are called to plant it.

Faith is a progressive process that builds upon each step and is the foremost "work" of belief. James 2, John 6, and 1 Thessalonians 3 all teach about how work and faith brought together lead to God's ultimate goal for each of our lives.

What do you use to fuel your day? Coffee? Relationships? Food? Experiences? Purchases? These things may provide us with a quick charge to tackle a few things, but they don't sustain us well enough to fuel our faith. James 2 reminds us that faith requires output and can only be sustained with the right type of fuel otherwise it isn't faith that works.

Laws help us stay within healthy boundaries, but if we focus on the law, skirting disobedience, and doing our best to not do anything deemed "wrong" we live in bondage to the law. James 2 reminds us that as a follower of Christ we can choose to follow a more perfect law, the law of liberty.

On a day when divisions are expected to run high, how do we seek first to love our neighbor as ourself even when we don't see eye to eye over politics? James 2 talks specifically to partiality and how it is rooted in evil, but thankfully that is not where God leaves us. He instead has provided us a much better example on how to live in love towards everyone, even those who may never understand or return the love we extend to them.

Occasionally, useful items are aesthetically pleasing, but looks are usually an afterthought when practicality considering the needs an item fulfills in our everyday life. James 2 reminds us that useful faith is messy and rarely aesthetically pleasing to the person living it out and the surrounding observers, at least in the short-term, that is why it's called faith.

As Christians we are to bear fruit in bunches with others, not as solitary pieces of fruit on the vine. The book of James is written with the words "us" and "we" to ensure that even when circumstances may cause believers to not be in physical proximity, we can't disassociate from other believers and expect to live out our full calling.

Persevering through life requires more than determination, grit, and self-confidence because these internal factors can't always compensate for the extreme external forces we face that lead to weakness, doubt, and fear. James 1 talks about how to maintain a persevering faith, not by trusting in ourselves, but rather in a very trustworthy guide who has no weakness, doubts, or fears.

There are lots of things we take into our bodies that are here today, gone tomorrow. But some things build up a presence inside us either through repeated exposure or by a conscience choice to remove the unwanted and tend only what we desire. James 1 refers to these build-ups as implants that we need to either set aside or receive more. Today we look further into this concept in Ephesians and 1 Peter to better understand how to live this way and why it matters for our soul health.

Being a good servant who uses their resources wisely has little to do with lack or excess of material goods has afforded us in this world, but our worldly provisions do dictate the mindset we need to take. James 1:2-11 teaches to those on both ends of the spectrum of worldly provisions and reminds us all that our response to various circumstances and trials will show how well we keep to this mindset when we are hard-pressed and looking for an escape instead of being perfected by living out our faith.

Living an effective life requires we make wise choices at every turn we encounter. These choices are not so much a matter of avoiding poor decisions, but pursing what is best and leaving the rest behind. As we start a new study in the book of James today, we see that James summarizes there are two key things we must do regularly to make wise choices that lead to an effective and fruitful life that will receive God's stamp of approval.

Do you know God offers the best disaster insurance policy that exists? His policy not only covers typical natural disasters, but even ones that in Daniel 12 are described as "such as never occurred since there was a nation." Thankfully, God has already written up the policy and signed on the dotted line that He will pay out when this date comes, but we also need to sign on the dotted line and our signature as everything to do with understanding the details of this policy and how we stay insured until that time comes.

Living in this world but not of it is not a onetime decision, but a consistent decision to stay on the track God asks us to live out each step of every day. Daniel 11 points out a historical record of the world that we can't remove ourselves from, yet Galatians 4 reminds us that there is a way to live parallel to these events without being subject to our human tendencies to fall prey to living in a worldly rut of existence.

Are you ready for 2020 to be over? Most people are. It has been a year filled with calamity. Unfortunately, the bible teaches that a time of tribulation beyond anything we can imagine is still yet to come, and Daniel 12 is one of those places where we see this reference. How then are we to spend our days as we anticipate this end date? The answer is, in hope of a guaranteed of what comes after that date.

No matter how much history you have studied in your past, if you look beyond the specific people and dates, it is apparent that the swaying of power in one direction and then in its opposition is normal. Daniel 11 goes into a great depth of how this cycle will only continue through human history. Thankfully, in Galations 4, Paul provides us with instruction on how to ride these worldly waves anchored in God's kingdom instead of the one we live in.

When we shine our faith, the spotlight has very little to do with us. The radiance we are given by means of our testimony is only meant to be the initial encounter others have with the Light of the World, Jesus. Daniel 12 tells us that our light makes a difference, but Jesus in John 5 continues this teaching by reminding us that light leading to life must move to a greater testimony, His.

I challenge you to take a step back today. Looking at your life (your actions, your decisions, your words, and your priorities) what type of proof are you living out about how a meaningful existence should be lived? No matter what you see in your survey, there is truth to be found in Daniel 11, Proverbs 4 and Romans 12, which remind us how to live a meaningful life that proves more than we have just survived another day on this planet.

Faith is not a life-preserver from the perspective of our earthly bodies. Faith calls us to die to self and thus gain a greater life which can only be attained when our earthly bodies have been shattered. Daniel 12 reminds us of this truth that 1 Corinthians 15 goes on to further expound upon and reminds us to stop living to preserve what will work against the best life God has for us.

Truth is not as some believe to be relative, but steadfast and immovable. In an ever-changing world, how do we know the difference between truth and mere speculations, or guesses of what may be true? In Daniel 11, Daniel states, "And now I tell you the truth..." and from this is where our study begins and we view this verse considering the warning of 1 Timothy 1:3-5.

What trait, circumstance, relationship, etc. are you looking to come to a perfect resolution? Would it bother you to learn that nothing can end in perfection in this world? What are you looking towards as you encounter bad habits, pain, heartache, sin, corruption, and evil in your daily life? Self-help tips, political fixes, research findings, and/or expert advice? No matter where we look, if we are not looking to Jesus, the systems we are putting our trust in are broken and flawed and can only provide minor repair and topical and temporary fixes. In Daniel 10, we see that the systems of the world are not any better at offering hope and comfort than they are today, but there is another approach to living within the brokenness and that is the calling we are asked to live as followers of Christ.

The life of a Christian is a battle, and our enemy stands ready consistently to make war with those who are living out their faith. And while we may know what our armor is and even how to use it, are we certain we know of battle orders and that we are consistently following them? In Daniel 10 we read about Michael the archangel and as we follow references to this same angel in Jude and Revelations we learn more about how his battle affects our daily lives and how every decision we make either follows our battle orders or turns a deaf ear to them.

It seems like a well worn Christmas cliché to say that you just need to believe to see, but the bible is filled with many examples that belief is a requirement for seeing beyond what most people are blinded to because of their unbelief. Within Daniel 10 we encounter one of those examples and from there reference a few more stories which confirm this truth.

Strength and resolve waxes and wanes in the best of us, despite efforts to stay strong on our own. In Daniel 10 we see Daniel depleted of strength. In comparison, we also read the description of an angel sent to Daniel who is full of strength and who passes along some of his strength to Daniel in his time of need. Within this transaction, we witness 5 basic principles on how to pass along strength to others and how to receive it when we are the one in need.

Spiritual battles surround us constantly, but too often we focus so much on what we can see, hear, touch, and smell that we miss opportunities to glimpse into these heavenly fights and that would increase our faith and understanding of spiritual things. In Daniel 10, Daniel goes beyond his earthly senses and mourns for understanding based upon his spiritual inclinations, and he is rewarded with a visit that increases his faith and strength.

God works as a master artist, not a mass producer. The gallery installation He is creating has already been planned out from beginning to end, but the canvases (the lives of the saints) are still works in progress. In Daniel 7 we get a sneak preview of how this gallery installation will be shaped, formed, and displayed. And the books of Ephesians and Revelations provide even more details for those anticipating the finishing of His installation.

What we glean from a devotional, a podcast, or even a good Christian book is only a summary of the truth God has revealed to another person. And although these summaries are inspiring, they should never replace our personal time with God in His word, with personal revelations directed by the Holy Spirit. in Daniel 7 we read a "summary" of the vision Daniel was given during his time with the Lord and in this video we talk about how we can get beyond surviving on other people's summaries and prioritize connecting with God one-on-one for a more satisfying drink from the well of truth.

Life has appointed seasons in which we can do little to speed up, slow down, or move past, but what we can do is control our actions in each of these seasons to ensure we optimize our activities to match the nature of the season and how it eventually will affect our life's harvest. In Daniel 7 we read that the enemy of God has his mind set on changes the appointed seasons God had set, yet in the end his attempt would be annihilated and destroyed. Today we dive into how we can work with God instead of against Him in each of the appointed seasons He has determined for our lives so we can bear the greatest eternal fruit.

Whatever we keep looking towards is what we are pursuing because wherever our eyes focus our body will follow. In general, we are likely to pursue those things we find pleasing, yet God doesn't qualify our pursuit of Him to happen only when He reveals things we find pleasant. In Daniel 7 we see that Daniel "kept looking" to God, even though the truth God made known to him was difficult to understand and accept.

Too often we hinge our joy on temporary things we are looking forward to...a vacation, a change in a relationship, or even in the purchase of an item. The problem is not that we use hope to drive our joy, but that we base our joy on things that are not permanent. In Daniel 7, Daniel shares a vision God gives him of an eternal possession and destination, one that we all should wait for and living in the joy of its guaranteed arrival.

As we get older, it becomes more difficult to muster our own energy to work. But, does that mean we should retire and put ourselves to pasture or is there an energy source that we need to connect with even more than we did in our youth that will fuel us for even more productive years yet ahead? In Daniel 6 we rarely consider that Daniel was about 81 years old when we was deposited into the lion's den and then from there, "enjoyed success" in his career. Today we look further at this truth in the light of Daniel's life and a message Paul gave to the Ephesians on a better alternative to retirement.

As Christians, God asks us to live as subjects, not as rulers or decision makers. Our paths are to follow His unchangeable law, and our choices are to reflect how that law agrees or disagrees with the options the world presents us. in Daniel 6 we encounter a parallel example of an unchangeable law that reveals some interesting insight on how to live in obedience as a subject of the King of Kings.

Without knowing it, we often make decisions based on fear, worry, or anxiety, especially if the decision is made in a rush. In Daniel 6 we see a group take advantage of this tendency in a scheme to do away with their adversary, Daniel. Today we take a closer look at what other parts of scripture say about making decisions based on feelings and how we can avoid that trap in our own lives.

What types of stories does your life tell? Stories that prove the truth of God's word or stories that contradict it? In Daniel 6 we see the life of Daniel reflecting the truth about God, which is magnified because of the contradiction it has with the stories of the lives of the others who are living around him.

Life’s ups and downs can throw off our balance and our resolve and if we allow the external things in our life to toss us around, it is more likely we will give into our fears, pain, sorrow, discouragement, and strife. In taking a step back and looking at Daniel 5 in the larger scope of Daniel’s life, we see him pass through some extreme ups and downs with unwavering confidence.

We often think life would be wonderful if it followed a plan, and we knew how that plan would play out step by step, but life is not like that and if it were to work that way it would prove to be a rather disappointing venture. In Daniel 5 we see the plan for an entire nation upended and a greater vision takes its place.

God does not ask us to change our environment. Instead, He asks us to stay illuminated wherever we find the road of life takes us. In Daniel 5, Daniel is brought into a situation that harkens the changing of environment he was brought into as a slave and that his only mission both before and after God’s changing of the guard is to continue to stay in His light.

God is sufficient, but He also asks us to be sufficient vessels for holding within us His Spirit. In Daniel 5 we see two contrasting examples of men who are described by their sufficiency, or lack thereof.

Our hands are extensions of our hearts and what they are doing, pointing to, and even grabbing for say much about what our hearts are seeking peace, joy, and ultimately hope from. In Daniel 5 gives us multiple examples of people who have extended their hands in various ways, both good and bad, for us to glean wisdom from.

We do not need a personal faith or convicted belief system to acknowledge God exists. God’s work is clear to any who are watching, and by choice we either are part of God’s work or watch Him work from the outside. In Daniel 4 we witness this insider/outsider choice in the lives of two men, Daniel and the king.

Creating peaceful spaces in our homes, families, and even in the community we live may pose challenging, but most of us would probably consider it a worthy pursuit because it seems like a surmountable task. In Daniel 4 we see King Nebuchadnezzar seeking to spread peace not just in one space or community, but throughout whole earth.

Sometimes in the simplicity of trying to understand the ways of God we take in scripture as “if – then” rules. “If I do _____, then God will do ____.” But the Bible is not God’s ultimate flow chart for godly and ungodly actions, rather it is a book filled wisdom on how to choose a better track, the one that brings us closer to God and others while pulling us further away from our own sinful tendencies. In Daniel 4 we see Daniel pull from his relationship and understanding of God to warn the king he is on a track and it would be advisable to do all he could to get off that track.

Our lives are but blimps on the canvas of time, and within the story God is orchestrating. So, how then are we to live with the greatest purpose? The answer is simple, yet requires us to lie down everything we hold dear within us that could manipulate life to our benefit. In Daniel 4 we see how God makes it clear to the king that even though he has been given reign over the whole known world, he truly has no control.

Humbling experiences have a way of reducing a person’s pride, but is a reduction in personal pride and an external exalting of God enough for salvation? In Daniel 4 we read on how God worked in the life of King Nebuchadnezzar to humble him and get his attention, but it’s very unlikely he started faithfully following Him as his god.

Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?”, but way back in the book of Daniel this same question put into the mind of a king. In Daniel 3, King Nebuchadnezzar refers to the fourth image in the fiery furnace which shows he has seen someone who is more than just mortal and even more than an angelic being.

History has proven repeatedly that human attempts to unify peoples and nations are never successful, at least not for any length of time. In Daniel 3 we see how King Nebuchadnezzar tries to unify the known world. In the end, his efforts are much less effective than he intended, but the courage of three young men who in contrast put their faith in the True Unifier reflected a message to the world that there is another way to achieve the unity we crave with both God and our fellow man.

It seems to make sense that if we are desiring to go some place stylish that we should also arrive to that destination in style, but would our choice from a human framework of stylish transportation bring us to a desired end of a heavenly stylish entrance? The answer is no. In Daniel 3 we are given a glimpse of how the king has used gold, a precious earthly mineral, to try to achieve a heavenly status and then compare it to what the Bible tells us may not seem as stylish a choice, but in the end will lead us to the most stylish outcome…entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven.

In the new era of social distancing, being a witness for Christ has become more complicated because witnessing requires proximity so others can see the difference between our true flawed nature and the contrasting perfect nature of God at work in our lives. In Daniel 3 we see now the God uses gatherings to do this very thing.

What do you do when you disagree with something? Do you take that matter into your own hands and figure out how you can make known your opposition, or do you let God handle the details and trust how He can use you as you stand strong in Him? In Daniel 3 we witness three young men allow God to lead them on the path of righteous opposition, trust in God no matter what the outcome means for their own lives.

An overarching theme God desires to create throughout our life stories is faithfulness. If we look at the example from the Bible, biographies of Christians who were greatly used by God, and people in our sphere of influence who have shown great faith, we see how their faith in God was what made their stories powerful.

When pressed hard for answers, our response discloses what we believe about God and how He operates in the world around us. In Daniel 2 we see two men, the king and Daniel, and how each responds to a disturbing situation as examples of two extremely different belief systems.

With every source of light there is the possibility of a shadow, which results in darkened spaces which things can hide and be undetected. But the Bible teaches us that with God there are no shadows and everything is revealed. How can this be? In Daniel 2 we see three different verses that point out no human can see into these dark places, but there is one Light that confirms this fact throughout scripture.

When we find ourself in a difficult situation, we often will pray for wisdom so we know best how to navigate ourselves out of the situation, but in Daniel 2 we see Daniel pray for compassion instead. At first this may not make sense, but if you consider how much your emotions and sinful tendencies tend to impede making good choices even with a healthy dose of wisdom, then you understand the reasoning for his plea.

We can have some preconceived ideas on what type of role we must fill to lead a righteous life, yet God is not about worldly appointments or titles, in fact He often works in opposition to what seems godly just to show that this world is not His. In Daniel 2 we see Daniel appointed to leadership over an ungodly group of people, but in God's hands this appointment is anything but ungodly.

Facts can influence us to a certain degree, but not with the same impact as a well-told story. Narratives throughout history have changed the course of lives and even nations. In Daniel 1 confirms this practice ,as does the Bible in general, giving us more insight on how we too can live lives of influence by becoming part of the ongoing narrative of God.

Our purpose is not just tied up in all the things we do right, handle well, or breeze through in life. Instead, our purpose is a combination of these things and the messy things in life. In Daniel 1 we see the pathway change for Daniel and his friends along with the entire nation of Israel, but in God's hands the purpose He had for all these people and the nation as a whole was still working out for their good and His glory.

Why do you eat the way you do? It is easy to tip the scales (literally) from one extreme to the other by either not thinking about our diet or overthinking our food choices. In Daniel 1 we see a more balanced approach to figuring out the best diet choices, a faithful approach.

When we focus more on what we have lost in our life instead of what we have to gain, we deprive ourselves and others of the potential for something greater yet ahead. Daniel 1 gives us a glimpse into the many losses the Jewish captives had to come to grips with, but in doing so they show us how letting go of these painful losses opened even greater doors for gain.

Confinement, captivity, quarantine...these are words our freedom-centered, individualized society finds oppressive. Yet, in God's hands, these places with forced boundaries hold us in the exact places where our purpose can flourish. As we kick off our study of Daniel 1 we look at how Daniel embraced his captivity and thus his God-given life purpose.
