Genesis chapter 22. God does the unthinkable. He asks for Isaac as a sacrifice. Surely, no. Surely, not this son: the son of the promise. No son, no descendants, no future, no kept-promise. God, why? Abraham obeys. God sees his heart and stops the whole sacrifice. He Himself will provide. Some two thousand years later, God would do the same. He would offer His own son on a holy altar. And this time, the knife came down.
