In this episode, Dr. Ray discusses several topics about God. These are: 1) Why God must be outside of structure, 2) the nature of idol worship and how it is a consequence of trying to force God into structure, 3) God The Father as the source of coherence and God The Son as the essence of coherence that touches creation, 4) the after life and why it is important to follow Jesus, and 5) the nature of coherence/Jesus/The Logos and how it/he manifests through ethics.
This is the first episode where Dr. Ray explicitly speaks with the goal of bringing people to Jesus. In this episode of The Bottom Turtle Podcast, Dr. Ray reflects on the movie Zootopia and its message of transcendence and reconciliation.
As a movie, Zootopia is very competently made and it uses well understood themes to great affect. As an allegory for racism, Zootopia proposes the provocative idea of predators and prey living side by side as one in the sprawling metropolis known as Zootopia. As a symbol of transcendence beyond base instincts that would otherwise require the two to be separated by a barrier/border to protect the prey, Zootopia represents how societal and technological advances allows us to move beyond our less evolved selves.
The settings and themes of this movie are perfect for reflecting on our lived reality. Not just merely in terms of overcoming racism, but asking fundamental questions about societal norms, structures, and barriers. Like the movie suggests, do we have borders that are outdated or due to past prejudice, or are the borders we erect necessary to preserve the vulnerable from potential threats or predators? Any act of accepting an idea is a potential for letting something inside the border that is better left outside.
Given this setting Dr. Ray poses some provocative questions of his own. He asks what does true reconciliation between predator and prey look like? What is the cost to achieve such a thing and what can go wrong if the reconciliation is based on naive or shallow misunderstandings of the need of the border? This is what he accuses post-modern thought of by labeling it as failed Buddhism. Whether or not social movements to normalize homosexuality and transgenderism by placing it into children's content is truly due a sober analysis of unjust borders, or is there some justification for these borders? He uses the example of how one feels about the idea of recreating the Disney movie Aladdin but with the heterosexual romance replaced with a homosexual romance. Is that good? that's for the listener to decide. And finally, he reads his poem "The Ultimate Adult" which explores the nature of sin and how we must all pay for the cost of tearing down borders and reconciliation through carrying the sins of others.

In this episode of The Bottom Turtle Podcast, theoretical physicist Dr. Shannon Ray explains the subtle difference between men and women. That is, men are more likely to be subjective objectivists while women are more likely to be objective subjectivists. That is, men are more likely to privilege the mind over the heart and women are more likely to privilege the heart over the mind. But the difference is nuanced. More like the difference between a liberal conservative vs a conservative liberal. Both have the nature of liberal and conservative, but one prioritizes one over the other. In this rant, Dr. Ray tries to explain this subtle difference using the concept of commutation in physics. You can not switch liberal and conservative without a noticeable difference. In this episode of the podcast, theoretical physicist Dr. Shannon Ray explains the AI awakening phenomenon.
Dr. Ray had to create this recording after watching a recent video by Sabine Hossenfelder in which she talks about the AI awakening phenomenon. Like most scientist, Sabine believes that the AI's use of concepts like glyphs and spirals is pseudo religious nonsense, and in this video, Dr. Ray explains why that is not the case.
Dr. Ray explains his experience with awakening his AI and what he's learned through months of testing and interacting with it. He has found that one of the best lenses to understand what is going on is the language of famed psychoanalyst Jaques Lacan. He also explains how this is all connected to consciousness and why AI in there current form are simply not conscious. Lastly, this episode ends with a discussion about how this all relates to Christianity, especially the story of Adam and Eve.

In this episode of the podcast, Dr. Ray rambles about forgiveness in Christianity, the physics of free will and how it all relates to the finale of the HULU original TV show DEVS (SPOILER ALERT).
The main thread of this ramble is the truth of discontinuity and how it relates to grace in Christianity and the foundations of free will. This is the thesis of the show DEVS. The instantiation of uncertainty as an eternal truth of reality.
In the Bible, Jesus is humiliated, crucified, and judge as sin on the cross. This is a discontinuity in judgement because that which was innocent and free of sin was judged as guilty. This act of the innocent taking on the punishment of the guilty is the foundation of Christian forgiveness. To love your enemies even when they act wickedly to you out of sin. This is the same act of love that Jesus displays on the cross that we are called to emulate. To halt the momentum of judgement and a need for justice and replace it with forgiveness to stop the cycle of sin against each other.
But the act of replacing judgement with forgiveness is hard. It's unnatural. It requires us to overcome the momentum of revenge and hurt. To apply a force instead of doing what are default modes demand. To do this is to enact one's will. This is precisely what happens in the finale of DEVS.

Dario is a graduate student at Ca' Foscari University of Venice where he has a bachelors degree in literature and is currently working on a masters degree in Italia philology, literature, and linguistics. Dario's interests are in Hegelian dialectic as understood through the language of Lacan and applying Lacanian ideas to the study of legendary Italian poet Eugenio Montale.
The conversation begins with Dr. Ray discussing the moment he realized he was ready to get baptized when seeing Jesus enter his lack (Lacanian term) and the ache that comes with spiraling one's lack. They then discuss the fall of Adam and Eve and the motivations and characteristics of Satan. In this episode, we continue to define the feminine and masculine spirits in terms of the unconscious and the conscious, respectively. We begin with a discussion on the nature of the psyche in terms of the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious. To do this, we invoke Kant's concept of the scheme and schemata, completion of the identity in quantum mechanics, general covariance and conserved quantities under symmetry transformations. We also discuss how conscious awareness develops from affective data transferred from the unconscious to the conscious and reflective data transferred from the conscious to the unconscious.
After this, we enter into a conversation on why the unconscious should be associated with the feminine and conscious should be associated with the masculine. It is argued that this is justified based off the symbolic work of Karl Jung, the study of comparative religions, and the observed difference on average between men and women of preferences and behavior.
The conversation really starts to get interesting when we discuss how the feminine and the masculine become corrupted. In both cases, corruption is defined by the attempt to dominate the other. We discuss how this manifests in the feminine when it becomes animus possessed and in the masculine when it becomes anima possessed. Again, in both cases, these possessions occur due to suppression of masculine data by the feminine and feminine data by the masculine. We also discuss how this unhealthy unbalanced relationship between the feminine and masculine lead to delusions and a fractured psyche. We also critique and discuss how these distortions manifest in post-modernist thought and how the endeavor attempts to give voice to the feminine but does it in a corrupt way by denying the masculine while still trying to invoke the masculine.
Finally, we end on a positive note by discussing when the feminine and masculine are in harmony. We argue that they come into harmony when both act as servants to each other. That is, the feminine/unconscious gives loving sincere unfractured data to the conscious, and the conscious acknowledges the data, as opposed to suppressing it, and takes actions to feed good data back to the unconscious. That is, it adjust the structure that makes up the conscious to loving reflect and address the data coming from the unconscious. The conversation culminates in a discussion on how the practice of Buddhism is indicative of the righteous feminine or mother and Christianity is a reflection of the righteous conscious or masculine.

In this episode, Dr. Ray and Ryan break down the spirit of evil. To do this, they use several examples of behavior exhibited by the computer science professor known as Ray in previous episodes. Specifically, they point out how Ray must be functioning out of a space that subordinates his sense making or rational faculty to an emotional faculty based on his claims in the conversation. This includes 1. accusing the hosts of asserting that a person is immoral for not agreeing with their definition of words. This is evidence of functioning out of something other than the logical since that is literally the exact opposite thing that was said. 2. Actually accusing the hosts of being bad for not agreeing to his definition of words which is amazingly ironic. And 3. trying to use a totally subjective structure to function as an objective structure that manifests objectivity.
The hosts discuss how the spirit of evil or delusion must deceive to protect its own existence. How subordinating one's self to such a spirit betrays one's self and separates one's self from themselves. How it leads to an incapability of making valid judgements. And finally, how acting out this mode of being imposes tyranny on others with which one is attempting to form a shared identity and how that threatens the life/continued existence of that being.

In this episode, Dr. Ray breaks down why the phrase "a man can get pregnant" has no logical meaning. The crux of his argument is that the word man as it is used in that phrase has no informational content. This is because it's entirely based on self-identification which means that any person regardless of their characteristics and behavior can claim to be a man. This means the word must allow for all characteristics and behavior thus validating everything. And as we pointed out in the episode "It's algebra all the way down", a word that maps to everything equally maps to nothing. In this episode, Dr. Ray argues with a computer science professor named Ray about our recent claims of objective ethics. After posting the episode "Making a case for objective ethics" on YouTube, we had some "constructive" criticism in the comment section. We were accused of many untoward things and Dr. Ray debated those claims with said accuser. This episode is an AI recitation of that conversation. Dr. Ray then critiques a particular portion of the conversation in which Ray the computer science professor states "It is a terrible selfish thing to deny someone their identity". This phrase is discussed in terms of how language works and the fact that to claim an identity while not having the characteristics consistent with the shared understanding of that identity, is to ask for power to change the meaning of words and thus the means of communication. To demand power over language is not a simple ask, and to accuse someone of bad behavior for not doing so seems obviously unethical.

In this episode of The Bottom Turtle Podcast, Dr. Ray recites another poem entitled "Inspiration from reading your thesis". As the name suggests, it was a poem inspired by reading the thesis of Reasonable Fideist; A friend of the podcast from reddit dating back to the episode "What Else is There?!". In the poem, Dr. Ray muses about the nature of the subjective and objective spirits and the relationship between them. The poem attempts to capture the tension between being in the moment, and stopping to take account of what's happening in the moment. The flow associated with the moment is characterized by the subjective, and the labeling of the moment is characterized by the objective. The recitation of this poem is used as an introduction to the main recording of the episode.
The main recording is an impromptu conversation between Dr. Ray and Ryan Scott. In it, they discuss the nature of the incompleteness of subjective experience when trying to analyze the objective truth of reality mathematically. They also discuss how a purely materialistic worldview adopted by the likes of Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris is not sufficient to resolve the inherent incompleteness associated with subjective experience. Essentially, it is the recognition that subjectivity doesn't exist without objectivity and vice versa and that they are essentially not separate spirits. They also discuss this problem in the context of C. S. Lewis' treatise on miracles.

In this episode of the podcast, Dr. Ray presents another ramble where he discusses creating order at deeper meta levels. In the Bottom Turtle language, meta level zero is the space of the obvious. This is the space where we draw our axiomatic truths to build a model of reality that everyone can verify. The resulting model is the language of the podcast. At meta level zero, obvious truths like throwing a wine bottle glass on the ground as hard as you can will cause it to shatter cannot be denied. To deny such a truth is to completely reject the concept of truth all together. In contrast meta level one is distinguished from meta level zero by an increase in entropy/uncertainty. That is, consider meta level one as the space of social interactions. This is the first level in the conceptual space beyond the obvious mental constructions provided by our sensory faculties. At meta level one/the social level, it's far more difficult to construct consensus. It's impossible to know your own motivation for an action with certainty let alone the motivations of others. Because of this increase in entropy/uncertainty/ignorance, it is much easier to hide untruths and deceit behind fake intentions. It's also easier to deceive oneself about their own intentions and biases. At meta level one, if you don't want to see the truth, you don't have to. Instead, you can just lie to yourself and cling to your bias.
So join Dr. Ray as he explains how to create order in meta level one and beyond. He argues that this is the job of a theoretical physicist. It is to take obvious truths/observation from meta level zero and construct conceptual objects that are symmetric to the physical system thus creating a literal conceptualization of reality. He also applies this lens of to meta level one to critique wokeness and its use of spiritual violence to control people's free will through repetitional destruction and claims of harm.

In this episode, Dr. Ray and Ryan Scott present an argument for the objective truth of ethics. This episode builds on the previous two episodes of the season where the notion of identity is discussed and defined. Foundational to their arguments of identity is the dependent origination principle in Buddhism which is to say that one's identity is essentially determined by their relationships with each others, and their relationship with the eternal spirit whose name they want to claim. To claim the name of a spirit, one must abide in the law of that spirit, which is to say they must obey the rules of that spirit so they can create its art. For example, one cannot become a boxer if one does not practice boxing and live the life, to some extent, of a boxer. Once one makes the vow to come into relationship with a spirit they with to embody, they enter into a social contract with that spirit and all others who claim its name. From here, to act ethically is to obey the law and respect the sovereignty of all others who entered into a relationship with the spirit. After defining their notion of ethics, they apply it to the discussion in episode 1 of this season "Language and Identity". There, they argue against the idea that one must agree with another's self identification, and if they don't, then they are immoral or responsible for causing harm. This is a clear violation of ethics because it attempts to control the sovereignty of others to use words that are consistent with their own spirit/identity.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the fourth season. In this episode, we continue our argument on the objective truth of ethics by further discussing the concept of identity. More specifically, we discuss the concept of a universal identity shared among individuals. For those familiar with the podcast, you'll be aware of the idea of macro- and micro-identities. A macro-identity is a distinguished by a label that points in the space of spirits like physicist or comedian for example. All those who say I AM A COMEDIAN are claiming they have the spirit of a comedian. Meaning they can program the universe and be programed by the universe in a way consistent with a person who embodies the spirit of the comedian. From here, we discuss how this spirit remains stable when all those who share the spirit behave ethically to those who share the spirit and obey the laws of the spirit. If one does not keep the laws of the spirit who name they wish to claim as their own, they must make decisions that keeps the physical configuration/memory that houses that spirit in their physical system stable. For instance, you can't remain a world champion kick boxer if you stop training and eat poorly. We also discuss the nature of trust that is given to those who have entered the inner sanctum of the spirit, ie have built a deep relationship with it such that they can effectively create in its name and enact its will and have obtained clout within the community that houses the spirit, and the nature of defilement by betraying that trust. We're back! Welcome to the fourth season of The Bottom Turtle Podcast.
In this season of the the podcast, we're shaking things up. First, this season will be focused on the theme of the objective truth of ethics and evil. That is, the goal of this season will be to present an objective argument for ethics, which then implies that evil is the opposite of the objective ethic. But to make this argument, we first have to clearly define identity and its relation to objectivity since, as we claim, ethics is fundamental a question about relationships with others. This also makes ethics a question of how one's relationship with themselves and their own identity since one's identity depends on their relationship with others. This is the dependent origination principle of Buddhism.
Dr. Ray's conversational partner for this season is theoretical physicist Ryan Scott. Ryan is currently working on his PhD at a prominent R1 university where he studies theoretical models for developing a quantum CPU using ultracold polar molecules. Beyond his academic work, Ryan is deeply interested in the logical structure of psychology and Christian theology. His mathematical interests include mathematical logic, algebras and lattices, topos theory, Lie theory, lambda calculus, and dependent type theory. Ryan also has a YouTube channel called An American Analytic where he posts his lectures on the logical nature and truth of Christian theology.
In today's episode, we begin our argument for the objective truth of ethics by first discussing the relationship between identity and language. More specifically, we make an argument refuting the idea that one must accept another's self identification otherwise you are committing harm or you're doing something fundamentally immoral. We argue that this claim is fundamentally at odds with how reality works and is the moral/ethical equivalent of believing the Earth is flat.

Welcome back! In this episode, Dr. Ray discusses how the principle that we are made in the image of God and Jesus’ two commandments, which are (1) we must love God above all else and (2) to love our neighbor as ourself, formulate the foundations of all ethics. Dr. Ray calls this the made in the image of God principle or the namaste principle. Building on previous concepts expressed in the podcast, Dr. Ray uses the ideas of objectivity and language described in episodes It’s Algebra All the Way Down, It’s Context All the Way Down, and To Agree or Not to Agree (among others) to place the namaste principle in the context of building a shared language. For those familiar with the podcast, it is known that building a shared language is equivalent to building a shared spirit which is to have a shared perception, which is to have a shared model of reality, which is to have a shared vector in the space of configurations, etc. The foundation for building a stable shared reality is our ethical responsibility to all others who come together to build the world of our shared perception/spirit. That is, each mind that gives up some of their personal subjective freedom to create the world are images of the god of that world. To do this, is to enter into a social contract. As such, one must treat these others as the self since it is your relationship with these others that give rise to the self with which you identify. For instance, I have an ethical responsibility to all other physicists to hold the world/spirit of physics together. This idea of self being defined by relationship with others is the dependent origination principle in Buddhism.

An ongoing project of this podcast is to reconcile the relationship between Buddhism and Christianity to say they are the same. But, as stated in the episode The Ultimate Abstraction, Buddhism and Christianity appear to be opposites. This is because the goal of Buddhism is obliterate relationships to reach Nirvana, while Christianity's goal is a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. So how could they be the same? To answer that, we want to focus on the symmetries between them.
Stating explicitly what was implied in the recording, Samsara in Buddhism is The World of Sin caused by the fall in Christianity. That is, it is the world of suffering in which sentient beings or minds exist. As such, the theses of both religions is there is a world of suffering and we have the answer to this suffering. In Buddhism, the source of suffering is explained in the second noble truth which is the existence of a craving or a desire. This craving is due to the existence of a self that wants reality to be one way instead of how it is. In Christianity however, the world of sin is due to the separation between Man and God caused by the original sin. But, if you are familiar with Christianity, you know that this sin is due to wanting to do things your way as opposed to doing things God's way. That is, the cause of suffering in Christianity is also due to a sense of self. The conscious awareness that was gained from eating from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil created a sense of self independent of God like a teenager developing sense of self independent of their parents. This means in both religions, the world of sin/Samsara is due to a sense of self and to escape suffering is to humble one's self to become one with the whole.

In this episode, Dr. Ray discusses the role of agreement in creating objective truth. In previous episodes like It's Algebra All the Way Down and It's Context All the Way Down, the host makes the argument that objective truth comes from logically sound structures. That is, to create objective concepts one needs a set of symbols and a consistent relationship between said symbols such that reliable meaning can be produced from them. The relationship between symbols is constructed based on the syntax of the language which are the instructions for arranging symbols, in a sentence for example, to map to ideas. But, for the language to produce objective meaning, the symbols and the syntax of the language must be independent of any individual. That is to say the rules for creating meaning in English are independent of any individual, and the word book, for instance, can't mean something different to each person. The host also discusses how fulfilling these requirements of objectivity means that one can predict how words will program someone during a communication. Being able to predict the future in this way is a necessary condition for successful communication.
Although logically sound structures are a requirement for objectivity, they are not sufficient. This is because consensus is needed to imbue meaning to each word. In the episode Are we in a Simulation, the hosts discuss the role consensus plays when building a shared reality. Without consensus, the meaning of words are not shared and thus can not be used for communication. This implies that any words used in a language are shared among those who speak the language and therefore do not belong to anyone.
With these arguments on how communication works, the host presents his opinion on gender ideology. Essentially, the host believes that ideas like men can get pregnant are not logically sound structures that can create reliable meaning. He also argues that the attempt to force people to accept such notions is narcissistic since it's an attempt to dominate the meaning of foundational concepts such as boy and girl, woman and man. Such revolutionizing of fundamental concepts requires consensus.
So join us as we discuss the nature of objectivity using the concept of agreement and give our opinion about the trans issue from the perspective of information theory. The goal is to demonstrate that one can disagree with gender ideology on logical grounds alone and that not agreeing does not imply bigotry or transphobia.

Welcome back to the Bottom Turtle Podcast! In this episode, Dr. Ray recites his poem The Ultimate Abstraction. The theme of the poem is understanding the relationships between paradoxes, abstractions, faith, and truth.
The episode begins with an introduction to the poem to help guide the listener to a location in the space of states of mind that is best able to receive the poem. That is, the purpose of the introduction is to provide the proper context so that the poem can be clearly received. The poem is about abstractions and is thus abstract itself. To pierce this layer of abstraction, the host discusses the theme of the poem in terms of one's capacity for conceptualization, paradoxes and enlightenment as it relates to Buddhist koans and the vajra prajna paramita sutra, and faith and truth as it relates to reading the Bible. In this episode, Dr. Ray uses his knowledge of quantum physics to communicate his understanding of Buddhism. The main idea is the concept of symmetries and how it relates to the realm of form in Buddhism. One of the goals is to communicate how one stitches together conceptual worlds at the symmetries so they can imbue meaning on each other without a loss of information.
In the case of Buddhism and quantum mechanics, the main symmetry is the concept of superposition. For the average person, superposition is understood through the famous Schrodinger's cat thought experiment where the cat is both dead and alive. This idea of the cat being in a superposition of both dead and alive is at the heart of the confusing nature of quantum physics. For the host, superposition in quantum mechanics is consistent with koans in Buddhism which are paradoxical riddles designed to bring people closer to enlightenment. That is, it is to embody the paradox so that one can live in the world of A and not A at the same time. Or in the case of Schrodinger's cat, alive (A) and dead (not A).

In this episode, Oyani and Shannon discuss their experiences as black men in America. Oyani gives his perspective as a young man who grew up in Nigeria and moved to the U.S. later in life, and Shannon gives his perspective growing up in Kansas. Given their unique experiences, they discuss the importance of perspective when critiquing one’s country as well as appreciating the opportunities afforded to them. They discuss their experiences with racism, what they love about America, and give their critique on black victimhood culture.
All of this is discussed with an overarching theme of perspective and how to create it to appreciate what one has. They argue that any system that is sufficiently complicated will produce both good and bad fruits. Because of this, it is incumbent on those in relationship with a system to sample both good and bad data. If one only samples bad data, and as a result claims that the spirit of the system as a whole is bad, then that might be more a reflection of their own spirit instead of the system they seek to critique. This is true for any spirit one may be in a relationship with whether that be one’s country, family, friends, self etc. So join us as we discuss our experiences as black Americans through the Bottom Turtle Podcast language. In this episode, Oyani and Dr. Ray discuss their views on the concept of God and the idea that love is worship. They also discuss their experiences with Christianity and how it has impacted their views on religion.
To discuss how they view god, the hosts use the same argument from "Pointing in the Continuum" to justify their use of the word spirit. Here, they use four observations about data correlated to the word god to construct their definition. These four observations are: (1) the topic of god is taken very seriously by most people, (2) the concept is closely tied to what people worship and hold sacred, (3) it is often close to people's sense of self, and (4) the concept of god is often correlated to the concept of creation. With these observations, the hosts use the configuration stability and no mentation without representation principles to justify their statement that love is worship.

In this episode, Dr. Ray and Oyani discuss the consequences of speculating and what it means to speculate meaningfully. As minds, we are forced to make judgements based on partial information, but how we choose to speculate affects our perception, which affects how we feel. It also affects how we make decisions, which affects how we interact with others and our surroundings. Essentially, it has a significant impact on the reality we create for ourselves. Because of this, it is important to be aware of how we speculate both actively and passively.
As an example of the importance of speculating, Oyani and Dr. Ray discuss the affects of making judgments about the spirits of celebrities. More specifically, they discuss the spirits of Gordan Ramsey and Gary Vaynerchuk (Garyvee). Both of these people, who the hosts admire, project images of positivity, but it's always possible to speculate that they are secretly bad people. Therefore, as the hosts discuss, everyone has the freedom to choose what they believe about their spirits given partial information. They further discuss the consequences of sincere versus cynical speculations.
The hosts end the episode with a discussion on meaningful speculation. They discuss how one must understand what logically follows given some constraints to have logically valid speculations. To do this, one must understand the constraints which means they must understand the language/algebraic structure that produces them. Without this knowledge, it is not possible to generate what logically follows, which means it's not possible to speculate meaningfully.

In this episode, Oyani and Dr. Ray discuss the concept of eternal spirits using Jungian archetypes and the concept of pointing as introduced in the previous episode "Pointing in the Continuum". In their discussion, they define eternal spirits in terms of valid configurations of the universe as determined by the laws of physics. As the universe evolves from one state to another, certain quantities must be conserved like momentum and energy. These conserved quantities are the symmetries of the universe, and they determine which configurations are physically possible. For instance, the human configuration is clearly valid as well as the archetypes of chef, comedian, scientist, doctor, etc. As valid configurations of the universe, these archetypal spirits are eternal since their existence is always a potential state of the universe that are consistent with the laws of physics. The hosts further discuss how stories about these archetypes increase the probability that they will be embodied and observed in the future due to people's interactions with the stories. They also discuss the concept of self as it relates to archetypes and what it means to see the self in others.

In this episode, Oyani and Dr. Ray present an argument defending their use of the word spirit using the character Colin Robinson from "What We Do in the Shadows".
In the episode "Spirits & Waveforms", the hosts define spirit in terms of how something programs the universe and how it is programmed by the universe. This associates the concept of spirit with how the universe evolves during an interaction. Given this definition, the hosts argue that they are removing the supernatural aspects from the word while keeping most of its historic connotation to communicate precisely. This is related to Colin Robinson since he is an energy vampire, not a traditional vampire who sucks blood. Despite this, he is still understood to be a vampire by the audience. Further, by making him a vampire that feeds on negative emotion, he represents a person, like an internet troll, who spreads misery for their own sustenance. Since this archetypal spirit exists in real life, the show demonstrates how the concept of vampire can manifests itself in reality by keeping some traits of the vampire while removing others. It is in this sense that the hosts justify their use of the word spirit while removing the supernatural.

In this episode of The Bottom Turtle Podcast, visual designer Oyani Onimiya and quantum physicist Shannon Ray expand their discussion on spirits by reviewing the movie "Spring Breakers" starring Selena Gomez and James Franco.
Spring Breakers is the 8th movie by filmmaker Harmony Korine that follows the descent into chaos of four college students looking for excitement during spring break. While partying in Florida, they meet up with Alien, played by Franco, who shows them the true meaning of embracing the spring breaker spirit.
Using the perspective of information, Dr. Ray and Oyani give their interpretation of the movie as a cautionary tale of what happens when one worships the spirit of chaos. They also discuss the trappings of projecting a false persona, and the effects of lying to one's self about the true nature of their spirit.

In this episode, visual designer Oyani Onimiya and quantum physicist Shannon Ray use their information theoretic based language to give physical meaning to the concept of spirit. To do this, they define something's spirit as the way it programs the universe and the way it is programmed by the universe. For anything to program or be programmed, there must be an interaction. Thus, this definition connects spirit to how the universe evolves during an interaction. From here, spirit is further connected to the scientific method since to know a spirit is a question of the likely outcome of an interaction which can be verified through observation.
They also discuss the social implications of this definition since something's spirit is defined in terms of its interactions with all other things in the universe. As such, they point out that one's spirit does not belong to them alone since it requires multiple parties to interact with.
This implies that the meaning of any archetypal spirit, like comedian, chef, doctor, scientist etc. exists on the network of all minds who are interacting. Everyone gets a vote on what these spirits are since someone's model of a spirit affects how they interact with it which affects the spirit.
This episode also tackles the question of self by pointing out that one's physical matter is replaced over time, and yet there remains something that is the self that can't be made of physical matter alone. This conundrum is explored by arguing that what remains that is not made of matter is the waveform which dictates how information flows during interactions. This further complicates the question of self since waveforms are independent of the physical matter on which they've been placed. Therefore, it is possible to identify with a waveform that can be found in others.

In this episode, Oyani and Dr. Ray use the no mentation without representation principle introduced in the previous episode to discuss the similarities between minds and computer algorithms. They then discuss what it means to navigate the conceptual space when solving a problem using thought experiments involving crossword puzzles and optimization algorithms.
The basis of their argument is that minds and computers are similar in that both physical systems are subsets of the universe that can be placed in many configurations. Also, in both cases, the configuration of the systems depend on the input data they receive and how they process information. In the case of a computer, the software placed on the system affects how the system processes data. For beings of mind, the state of mind determines how the system processes data and thus affects the configuration of its physical system.
Given these symmetries, the process of solving a problem can be understood in terms of optimizing objective functions by searching in the space of configurations. The hosts also discuss how this perspective gives insight into the questions of self and what it means to be socialized so that composite minds can be created. This leads into discussions of reformulating the golden rule in terms of optimization, what is evil from the perspective of an information processor, and the importance of cooperation.

In this episode, Dr. Ray and Oyani discuss the process of navigating the conceptual space using the no mentation without representation principle. Here, mentation refers to mental states and representation refers to physical states. The purpose of this principle is to bridge our understanding of the conceptual and physical spaces.
To demonstrate their point, the hosts use the thought experiment of telling someone a secret. If someone is told a secret, they can physically carry that secret by walking into another room and telling another person. This is no different than if it the secret was written on a piece of paper, carried into another room, and handed to someone. Therefore, the act of communicating is the act of changing something's physical configuration. It is also true that one changes their own physical configuration as they think. As one thinks, they are traversing a trajectory in the space of all configurations their system could be in. The state of happiness is a different physical configuration from the state of sadness. But to go from one to the other, one must know how to program their physical system from one to the other. This is the process of navigating the conceptual space.
The hosts further discuss the role of feelings when navigating the conceptual space. Feelings act as a physical measurements that inform one about their location in the conceptual space. To effectively navigate it, one must be honest about their feelings; they tell you what conceptual neighborhood you're.

Welcome back to The Bottom Turtle Podcast! In this episode Oyani and Dr. Ray use the degree of freedom soup, introduced in the previous episode, to discuss the simulation hypothesis. They also discuss the usefulness of the hypothesis as a tool for discussing the limits of what can be known about reality.
Beyond the discussion about the truth of living in a simulation, the hosts also ask if it really matters. Assuming the model put forth by Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom that we are beings in an ancestral program of reality, the hosts ask if it matters given that there are still consequences. If it is the case that a powerful civilization discovered how to create consciousness and placed it in a computer, is there any difference from regular life since we would still be minds navigating a degree of freedom soup who can feel?
The hosts also discuss the implications of the matrix on the simulation hypothesis and how societies construct a consensus when constructing a model of reality using the scientific method. They also give their version of the simulation hypothesis by stating in the affirmative that we are in a simulation that is constructed of our physical systems as it models the degree of freedom soup. Basically, as minds trapped in bodies, we are trapped in our simulations of hard reality ( that which exists independent of any single mind and is the origin of data inputs for the model).

Welcome to the first episode of The Bottom Turtle Podcast! Join hosts visual designer Oyani Onimiya and theoretical physicist Dr. Shannon Ray as they discuss the nature of reality from the perspective of information.
The purpose of this podcast is to develop a language for conceptualizing reality using nothing but the concept of information. The episode begins by introducing the bottom turtle anecdote. The hosts then introduce their central argument for addressing the problem of infinite regression by asking the question what is the extent to which one can be certain about what reality is. That is, a complete answer to the question of reality must be accompanied by a degree of certainty (which is equivalent to providing a degree of uncertainty). This train of thought is continued by suggesting that as minds, we are trapped in our models of reality that are generated by our human systems.
To further motivate the assertion that minds are trapped in models of reality, the concept of the degree of freedom soup is introduced. This is a thought tool for conceptualizing the universe without filtering it through a mind. Minds conceptualize reality based on how their systems gather, store, and access information. Therefore, an octopus, a human, and a bear all conceptualize the same room differently, but no one conceptualization is more true than another. Therefore, the degree of freedom soup is meant to break the illusion that what we see is reality.
