In late 2019, the Hunter Local Land Services Cultural Burn Training Project brought together Aboriginal community members in the region to share Cultural Burning knowledge and practices, together with Indigenous Fire Practitioner Victor Steffenson and Fire Stick Alliance. 

Undertaken on Wanaruah Nations Aboriginal Corporations land at Paynes Crossing in the lower Hunter Valley, the objective was to provide a fire break for the property and care for native flora and fauna. 

Thanks to the Wonnarua/Wanaruah Elders and community for their participation, and allowing the project to be undertaken on their traditional lands.

In this episode of the Hunter LLS Poddy, Colin Elphick talks with Kelvin Johnston, a Wiradjuri man who works with Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council and is participating in the Cultural Burn Training Project. 

Kelvin is passionate about improving the management of Aboriginal land and took part in the project to learn more about Cultural burning so he can begin applying it to the land he manages.
