Black Sabbath says they never heard of Coven and we, of course, believe them... it's just that the calendar appears to have some follow-up questions.
Eight months before Sabbath dropped their debut, a Chicago band named Coven had already arrived armed with Satanic lyrics, inverted crosses, fake blood, a song called Black Sabbath, and a frontwoman named Jinx Dawson who signed her record deal in actual blood. Unfortunately, Charles Manson held up a copy of their album, record labels collectively wet themselves, and history quietly shoved heavy metal's real mother into a cupboard for fifty years. Expect atheist comedy, religious satire, occult history, sketch comedy, and Satanic Panic. Fully scripted. Heavily produced. Featuring Satan and Tony Iommi's Heavy Metal Paternity Test, and a very stressed HR department dealing with human skulls.

SAUCES This episode draws on interviews with Jinx Dawson, Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls, and Craig Karpel’s notorious 1970 California Evil article in Esquire. The complete research pile is considerably larger, mildly alarming, and available on request if you're into bibliographies and poor life choices.
