Motley Crue (Part 1) (S3-E13)
In Part 1 of a 2 Part episode, the JabberGuys get into the beginnings of Motley Crue. Their dysfunctional relationships, run-ins with the law, and insane antics while on tour have earned them their “bad boys of rock” reputation.

Motley Crue has sold over 100 million albums
Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Glam Rock
Vince Neil actually turned down the first offer to join the band, but later reconsidered.
Sixx wanted to initially call the band “Christmas”
Sixx remembered someone calling their group “a motley looking crew” ... and he later used that memory to name the band,
Motley Crue’s 1982 Canadian Tour was filled with bad behaviour, criminal antics, and ended early as a financial disaster.
(1983) Opened for KISS’s Creatures of the Night Tour, but were dropped after a few dates. Did it have something to do with members of Crue were having sex with Eric Carr’s (KISS drummer) girlfriend behind the drum kit?
(1983) “Too Fast for Love” – debut album.
Bad behaviour trashing hotels continued during their Hamburg, Germany tour.
(1983) “Shout at the Devil” album released (4x Platinum)
Controversial due to claims of devil worship.
Ozzy Osbourne befriends members of Crue and invites them to open on his “Bark at the Moon" Tour... and the bad behaviour continued.
In Memphis, Ozzy and Vince Neil stole a car and trashed it.
(1985) “Theatre of Pain (3rd album)
Vince Neil coming back from a liquor run, had a head-on collision and his passenger was killed. Neil was sentenced to 30 days for man slaughter and charged with a $2.5 million civil suit.
(1987) Nikki Sixx has out-of-body experience during one of his heroine over-doses and paramedics had to ‘kickstart‘ his heart, which was the inspiration for their song “Kickstart My Heart”
(1987) “Girls Girls Girls” – reaches #2 on Billboard
(1989) They hit #1 with “Dr Feelgood” album featuring the single “Kickstart My Heart”.

Their manager convinces the band members to enter rehab before they end up in body bags
Bob Rock (Producer) made them record their parts separately (Dr. Feelgood) because of too much in-fighting

(1973) Scottish born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young start AC/DC, based out of Sydney Australia. Brother George (EasyBeats) helps produce
Dave Evans starts as the lead singer but doesn't last long. On occasion the band’s manager had to replace Evans when Evans refused to go on stage.
Where did the AC/DC name come from?
(1975) Bon Scott joins the band after being with ‘The Valentines’ and “The Fraternity’, and taking odd jobs, including driving for AC/DC.

The Dark Side of the Moon concept album is launched in 1973
Ground-breaking use of progressive technical sound engineering
Original members of Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright
David Gilmour joins the group in 1967 and Syd Barrett leaves in 1968
The recording environment was dark to feed creativity, and contributed to the dark lyrics
Studio album is recorded over 2 years with the working title ‘Eclipse’ at Decca Studios (Hampstead-1972), Rolling Stones Victorian warehouse studio (Bermondsey-1972), and Abbey Road Studios (London-1972-73).
Two songs used to promote album were “Us and Them” and “Money”
Album scheduled for release in March 1973, is preceded by a press reception in February, but band doesn’t show up since they felt the album wasn’t ready yet. The press listened to the album with cardboard cut-outs of the band members on a low-quality PA system.
Controversy with credits and compensation for the song “The Big Gig in the Sky” with singer Clare Torry. She wanted credit for co-composing and sued them 30 years later. Settled out of court.
Original pressing has an error in the credits for the assistant sound engineer: “Peter Jones vs Peter James”
Alan Parsons was a big part of the sound engineering for the Dark Side of the Moon and was nominated for a Grammy for his work on the album.

Wizard of Oz sync’d with The Dark Side of the Moon? The JabberGuys are skeptical.
The Dark Side of the Moon remained in the Billboard Top-200 for 736 non-consecutive weeks between 1973 and 1988.

The Vinyl Comeback (S3-E9)

The various revolutions per minute (RPM): 78, 33 1/3, 45
Play your vinyl on quality turntables for the best sound and to protect the record.
How are you supposed to clean your vinyl? Is the vinyl cleaning fluid all that special?
The album artwork is part of the experience of buying and enjoying vinyl.
Cassette mixed tapes relied on record players or radio play for recording songs.
So, where did the vinyl record come from?
78rpm records, made from shellac were introduced in
(1877) Thomas Edison invented the phonograph which could record and play sound.
Early 1900s the disk was further developed and by 1925 the shellac 78rpm was the standard.
(1939) Columbia Records starts to develop vinyl technology.
By 1948, the ‘LP’ (Long play) label is successfully introduced, allowing for longer playtimes per side.
Why does the 45rpm record have a larger hole in the centre, that requires an adapter to play on your turntable? All for the convenience of accommodating the mechanics of the jukebox, which exclusively used 45rpm records.
After their failed 1931 attempt, in 1949 RCA successfully launches the 7” fine-grooved 45rpm record format.
By the 1950s, 12” 33 1/3 vinyl becomes the standard.
(1962) Phillips introduces the cassette tape.

Rutsey leaves the band due to health issues
The band drives 300-400 miles a night in a rental car, then they move up to a station-wagon for about 10 years. Finally upgrading to the ‘Funcraft’ van.
RUSH has a drinking session with Thin Lizzy in the Funcraft
RUSH recruits Neil Peart for an audition to replace Rutsey, who was working as a parts manager for his dad’s factory supply store in Beamsville, Ontario
(Aug 1974) RUSH opens for Uriah Heap and Manfred Man, Neil Peart’s first concert with the band, having only 2 weeks to prepare for the concert
Neil Peart, a very well-read and talented guy, takes on lyricist duties along with his drumming

Harry Nilsson - His manager took all of his money, and left him with $300, and lots of outstanding debts. Died of heart failure a few months after claiming bankruptcy in 1994.
Dee Snider - (Twisted Sister): Huge success in the 80s, followed by a downturn, but Dee kept up his spending, leaving him flat broke in 1995.

Bjorn Ulvaeus: Hootenany Singers
Benny Andersson: Hep Stars (one of biggest pop groups in Sweden in the 1960s)
Anni-Frid Lyngstad: won a talent contest and a contract with EMI Sweden (originally from Norway)
Agnetha Faltskog: Solo career (4 solo albums between 1968-1971)
The 4 meet and start writing songs and performing together
Benny+Frida, Bjorn+Agnetha, become couples
1970 - Festfolk was their first attempt together, with not-so-great results
1973 - They enter the contest at Melodifestivalen, and qualify for Eurovision with the song “Ring-Ring” finishing third
1974 - Eurovision, ABBA wins the competition with the song “Waterloo”, with their new name “ABBA”
“ABBA” is an acronym for their names… Anni-Frid, Benny, Bjorn, and Agnetha

1976- ‘Arrival’, their 4th album is a big hit

ABBA’s Australian TV special receives more viewership in Australia than the moon landing
1979- Schedule a tour of the USA and Canada. Agnetha was fearful of large groups, traveling and specifically flying. Going into Boston, their flight is delayed due to their landing airport being wiped out by a level 4 tornado.
1979- “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” is released
1979- Bjorn and Agnetha file for divorce
(1981 - Benny and Frida file for divorce, but ABBA continues to perform together)
1980- “Super Trooper”, “Winner Takes It All”
1980- ABBA’s last performance in front of a live concert crowd in Japan
The touring, Agnetha’s social issues, 2 divorces all start to catch up with them
1982- Band members start to do some separate projects
1992- Release the compilation album “ABBA GOLD”, selling over 31 million copies
1999- “Mama Mia” play and movie bring ABBA introduces their music to a new group of people
Agnetha at this point becomes a bit of a recluse
2010- Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Started with the band in 1963
Charlie was a graphic artist before he joined the band
Charlie had the ‘Charlie Watts Quintet’
Charlie’s first music love … jazz and blues
The Rolling Stones band was originally called the ‘Blues Boys’
Charlie has been married since 1964 to the same woman for 57 years … Shirley Ann Shepard
Charlie Watts loved his oatmeal, and Keith opted for Jack Daniels
Charlie had some substance abuse issues in the 80s
During the time when the band members weren’t getting along, and Mick suggested that he was going to pursue a solo career, which didn’t sit well with Keith and Charlie.
Mick called Charlie in his hotel room asking … “Where’s my drummer”. Charlie responded by coming down to Mick’s room and punching him. “Don’t ever call me YOUR drummer again.”
Charlie had to be convinced to join Mick and Keith in the band in 1963, since he was already in another band.
The upcoming Filter Tour was to be the first time that Charlie was going to miss some of the band’s gigs.
After falling down a flight of stairs and breaking his ankle, Charlie went cold turkey and gave up everything, smoking, drinking, drugs.
Charlie survived throat cancer in 2004
Charlie sketched every bed in the hotel rooms he has slept in … a little quirky?
Charlie and his wife owned a horse breeding farm
Charlie’s net worth when he died was estimated to be about $250 million
To loosen up before gigs Charlie would perform a series of hip wiggles he got from show girls
Charlie had a collection of suits and vintage cars. Unfortunately, Charlie never had a drivers’ license. (According to the Rolling Stones Documentary)
Cha got stung by a bee before the show. Don’t kill bees!
Charlie was comfortable being in the background, and didn’t want to perform drum solos
