I recall a few years ago buying a new car, it was a Hyundai Coupe, I’d never seen one before and thought I’d get something different.
As soon as I got the key and drove it, I saw them all over the place!
Not so unique after all.
This phenomenon is called ‘Intentional Blindness’ or ‘Perceptual Blindness’, when we don’t notice something in our field of view because we are busy focusing on something else.
I think this is akin to the pervasiveness of Digital Signage, it is everywhere we simply don’t see it.

At IGEL DISRUPT 2024 in Munich this week, Lenovo presented its vision of how generative AI’s next advancement will involve personalizing end-user devices. This means that computers, phones, tablets, and other devices will soon be able to understand the context of our activities and adapt to how we prefer to work.
Overall, the concept of adding AI at the endpoint is gaining a lot of traction. In 2023, Adobe reported that 77% of all devices use some form of AI. Lenovo sees the future of AI moving to a background-running service, first appearing locally in high-end and then consumer devices and eventually becoming ubiquitous across all environments, allowing incredibly high-power models to function at low-power demand.
Lenovo, in partnership with IGEL, has already taken steps to implement these innovative features.

Windows 10 goes end of life on the 14th of October 2025. By that date, Microsoft will stop providing free software updates from Windows update, no technical assistance will be offered and lastly, there will not be any more security fixes. Security fixes are a crucial part, and if you are on a system where a new vulnerability is exposed, and no more security fixes are going to be provided, you are in big trouble. Looking at last year’s increase of cyberattacks with ransomware, and how it affects companies, that is not an option!

In a DR scenario IGEL OS will work without the need for management infrastructure to be setup and configured, simply boot to IGEL OS, download evaluation licenses for 90 days; install any client applications you require to connect to your VDI, DaaS and\or WEB and SaaS applications and get your users back up and running FAST.
This may also have the advantage of granting the IT team breathing space whilst they continue to troubleshoot any ongoing outages.

IGEL, provider of the secure endpoint OS for now and next, today from IGEL DISRUPT 24 announced new innovations with Citrix, a business unit of Cloud Software Group, which enhance the security and digital work experiences of their mutual customers. IGEL announced that the IGEL OS will be among the first Linux OSs to deliver support for Citrix® Enterprise Browser, which works in concert with Citrix® Secure Private Access to provide zero trust access across virtual, web, and SaaS applications from a unified platform with common policies and observability. Citrix also announced planned Linux support with Citrix uberAgent®, which IGEL plans to support upon availability, enabling comprehensive endpoint monitoring of their devices.

The principle of ‘waste not, want not’ was first declared 300 years ago. It is a reasonable idea, to avoid wasteful use of resources and provide for a more secure future. However, the principle has lost ground; the IT environment being one example. A spending study by Flexera reports underutilization or wasted IT spending of 36 percent for desktop software, 33 percent for data center software, 32 percent for SaaS and 32 percent for IaaS/PaaS.
The study confirms that enterprises continue to spend needless dollars and use precious IT time, loading up their hardware endpoint devices with up to a dozen pieces of software – and required agents – before the end user can even work productively with the device. It also confirms some of this software spend never even makes it to the desktop.

From pension funds to healthcare providers, ransomware is still finding plenty of victims. After a post-pandemic drop, the rate of ransomware is accelerating. Two groups getting attention are CIOp and BlackCat (ALPHV). Cl0p’s MOVEit Transfer hack to date has affected 15 million people and 121 organizations, including two large pension funds, CalPERS and CalSTRS. BlackCat (ALPHV), skilled at exfiltration, threatened to leak photos and sensitive data of a plastic surgeon’s patients and, according to a Check Point report, previously leaked patients’ photos and medical records after an attack against American healthcare provider LVHN earlier this year.

Remote work is alive and well and thriving in the U.S. and abroad. An estimated 36.2 million American employees will be working remotely by 2025. Right now, about a quarter of U.S. employees are working remotely and 16% of U.S. companies are all-remote, according to Zippia. It’s indicative of what is becoming the standard workforce environment of the future: a hybrid work environment that includes a fluid mix of remote, mobile, and on-site workspaces with a steadily increasing number of applications being delivered from the cloud. IT teams must contend with this assortment of workspaces and remote worker needs at the endpoint, and it is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. They need to achieve a fine balance fulfilling all remote worker requests and maintaining a level of security and access control that supports the overall safety of the network.

The Digital Workspace Ecosystem Alliance (DWEA), a non-profit consortium of technology leaders dedicated to providing vendor-neutral tools and resources to help organizations develop their digital workspace strategies, has released the results of its first annual “State of the Digital Workspace 2022” survey, which looks at adoption, benefits, challenges and opportunities that remote, hybrid and on-premises work environments currently face.
During September 2022, more than 2,500 organizations around the world took part in the survey, which was one of the largest digital workspace-focused surveys to date and comes at a pivotal moment when the upheaval we’ve experienced due to the global pandemic. The lessons learned over the last two years are still fresh in our minds and based on the survey, a clearer picture of the path forward is emerging with many organizations eager to solidify the digital workspace strategies that will see them into the future.

More and more of our IGEL customers want to facilitate work from anywhere.
In the office they were familiar with using #IGELOS driven devices. By providing end users with notebooks running IGEL OS or UD Pocket(IGEL on a stick) user can safely and easily connect to their virtual workplace.
The management backend (UMS) is managing these devices in the local network. connect to ICG and the management backend connects to ICG and the devices can be managed as if they were local.
If you're ICG is installed and configured well you can now manage you're devices outside the office. Deploy and update profiles, support users with shadow functionality. One important part that has to be configured separately is the distribution of IGEL OS firmware and Custom Partitions (Additional Software running on the IGEL OS like MS Teams and Zoom)

One of my favorite parts about the IGEL Community and any community is people helping people. Someone asks a question, maybe not even relating to IGEL itself but an associated technology. Many fine folks jump in to give their suggestions. Recently I saw just this in the IGEL Community, and the solution is so fantastic and helpful; I wanted to share it with all of you!
Joseph Masone, asked the question:
"Aside from modifying hosts files, is there a way to allow only a list of URLs we designate via the Firefox browser? We tried setting up a local HTTP proxy. However, that can be bypassed by simply typing HTTPS in the URL. We also tried restricting all the navigation menus/toolbars; however, one of the sites we need to allow access to has links that can leverage to access other unwanted sites."

I’m often asked why is IGEL investing in IGEL OS (RPI4) as an alternative to the Intel x86-64 bit architecture. There is no simple answer, but in a nutshell, this is why IGEL OS on ARM:
- ARM is here to stay (witness Apple’s move to M1)
- Choice is good – competition is good, it keeps us all honest
- RPI4 often offers a smaller form factor than the equivalent x86 device
- Etc….
THAT’S ALL WELL AND GOOD, BUT WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Need for an Enhanced User Experience Drives Adoption for VDI and User Experience Management Solutions
Earlier this year, during our annual DISRUPT event, we had the opportunity to dig deeper into the issues and challenges IT faced during the onset of the global pandemic. Most specifically, we looked into how end user computing (EUC) professionals addressed the immediate need to move workers from the office to home with record speed.
Based on survey responses from 269 end user computing (EUC) professionals across North America and EMEA, 61% named user experience the most significant challenge they faced when shifting to a work-from-home model. While being the number one issue across all regions, the challenge was more prevalent in North America (66%) than EMEA (52%).

Sadly, in 2021, we’re used to the fact that people are constantly trying to get access to our information. We seem to hear reports from major businesses weekly that some database has been hacked, or supposedly secure credentials have been compromised, and personal details have been leaked all over the internet.
We’ve got to the stage where we no longer labor under the misapprehension that we, or the businesses we use will never be hacked. Instead, we’re into the era of damage limitation. If sensitive information is stolen, the strategy is to make it as difficult as possible to get anything useful from it via encryption, or by keeping key parts of the data separate.
There’s another type of attack though, which is much more insidious. It’s one that doesn’t aim to steal any data. Instead, is about pure blackmail. And it’s on the rise.

Hello everyone, I had a recent case where a customer wanted his Bluetooth headset to automatically be in HSP (Headset Profile) mode. By default, IGEL OS seems to connect Bluetooth headsets in A2DP mode (suitable for high-quality audio but no mic input).
However, it's possible to run a command to switch to headset mode.

There is a lot of confusion about the term “digital workspace.” If you have a remote workforce, then you have probably come across this term and may know that it is a way to help your employees have access to all of their applications and services regardless of where they are or what device they are using.
Another term that you have probably come across is virtual desktop infrastructure. If you already have a VDI solution, does this mean you have a digital workspace?
Given how confusing the terminology is, this is a very reasonable question to ask, so let’s look at what the two things are and whether they do, indeed, serve the same purpose.

Back in the 1980’s, there was a focused effort to stop the environmental impact of pollution caused by litter and other harmful pollutants damaging our air quality and water. The public service announcement proclaimed: “People Start Pollution, People Can Stop It.” Little did we know then how relevant this slogan would be for the massive volume of e-waste now damaging our environment.
The UN is calling it the “Tsunami of E-Waste”. It’s the world’s fasted growing waste stream and is becoming a significant global environmental issue. Whether piled in the landfill or incinerated, improperly processed e-waste causes significant health risks to humans, as well as the environment around use, as dangerous toxins are released.

Have you ever asked yourself these questions when doing some support or admin tasks?
- Your user is connected via WIFI and is complaining everything is slow. How strong/good is the WIFI Signal of the remote endpoint?
- Your user is not able to access a resource and you to debug is. What is his Public IP?
- Your user is complaining that his connection is slow. You would be happy to do a quick Speed test. How is his Download speed on her/his side?
- The user needs to access a server but can't. Could you check automatically if the server is reachable from the endpoint?
Well, for all of these questions, they are Linux commands you could issue in a Remote Terminal, Terminal, SSH but how handy would it be to get that information back to UMS every time the device boots? I created a few Profiles writing that information back to UMS using the UMS Structure Tag.

I received a customer's request on how to create a custom partition with which a user running IGEL OS can register the device with an IGEL Cloud Gateway server at any time. The customer wants to store all the data prior so is not required to enter anything. I looked at it and developed a safe and straightforward solution that does not require a custom partition. It has become a custom profile that works with predefined variables.

AMAZON WORKSPACES ON IGEL IS HERE!
On February 25th, 2021, at IGEL DISRUPT Unite, IGEL announced and released a private build (fully supported) of IGEL OS containing an integration of Amazon WorkSpaces Linux client conveying to the world that all major VDI/DaaS platforms were now available.
