We are so indoctrinated with the idea that policing and caging people stops crime that it's difficult to imagine anything other than the police state. But if reducing harm is achieved by giving police unlimited powers and handing out long prison sentences, something America has done for decades, why don’t we have the safest society? Prison abolitionists like Mariame Kaba say there is a better way.  And it starts with mutual aid.
