The law was a temporary restraint until the promise made to Abraham was fulfilled through Jesus Christ. The law was given so man would recognize his sins and see these were offenses to God. People cannot rely on their own righteousness but must turn to God in faith. Paul writes in Galatians chapter 4, "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons."
