Welcome to Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I’m thrilled that you’re here. I’m your host Debi Talbert, retired Flight Attendant, creator of the EXIT Methodology, advocate for living your best and most intentional life, plus an alcohol freedom coach.
I’ve been right where you are right now, feeling stuck and trapped in this drinking life. I never thought I’d find my way out. Alcohol first came into my life to help me feel comfortable fitting in. But as life went on, it grew into my #1 way of coping with life.
I started to fall into the belief that having a drink would rescue me and be the quick fix whenever I felt overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed. Sound familiar? I went from thinking I was broken and would never be fixed to discovering that the root of my struggles was not me… it was my approach!
That’s exactly why I’ve created this podcast. For those of you desiring a change. You’re aware of your drinking habits are something you want to change and you’re ready to put yourself back into the Captain's seat of your life and relationship with alcohol.

It's Never Too Late to Go After Your Dreams: How to Rediscover Your Passions and Pursue Your Goals at Any Age
Do you ever feel like it's too late to achieve your dreams and goals? That ship has sailed, right? Wrong! I'm here to tell you that it's never too late to rediscover what brings you joy and passion in life.
This powerful three-step framework will help you re-ignite your inner fire and start taking steps toward the life you desire. This process has helped me and countless others exit the cycle of self-doubt and limiting beliefs and start living life to the fullest.
Step 1: Tell Yourself the Truth
Be honest with yourself - do you still want to achieve this goal or dream? It's perfectly normal and healthy to let go of aspirations that no longer fit who you are. The key is checking in with your true desires.
An insightful exercise is to make a list of the best moments in your life and categorize them into experiences, relationships, accomplishments, and objects. What category has the most tallies? This brings awareness to what really matters to you.
Step 2: Ignite Curiosity
Get curious about what would make achieving this goal easier or harder for you. Use B.J. Fogg's "Ability Chain" - time, money, physical effort, mental effort - to ask yourself empowering questions. This honesty allows you to uncover obstacles and solutions.
Step 3: Start Testing
Take action by testing strategies and behaviors to address the obstacles you identified. View setbacks as data to learn from. Return to Steps 1 and 2 as needed to adjust your approach. With persistence, you can design a path to success.
No matter your age or past, you have so much life yet to live. Follow these steps to rediscover your passions, boost resilience, and make your dreams a reality. I believe in you!

What are Age ANTs?
Age ANTs are the unconscious, negative thoughts we have about growing older. Common examples include "I'm too old to try new things" and "Every ache means the worst."
Why do ANTs Matter?
Left unchecked, ANTs shape how we see the world and limit our actions. Debi explains how the brain seeks to validate thoughts, directing focus. This impacts feelings and behaviors.
Recognizing Your Own ANTs
Debi guides visualizing ANTs as separate from ourselves. See them as tiny ants crawling on sentences apart from you. This gives the power to choose different perspectives.
Questioning Deeply Held Beliefs
Some ANTs feel completely true, but asking if all people agree reveals them as stories, not facts. Writing thoughts down helps objectively analyze what's belief versus reality.
Shifting to Supportive Thoughts
Notice which thoughts inspire your dreams or hold you back. Intentionally choose thoughts that support goals rather than ANT-dictated limitations. You have control over your perspective.
Find out about Debi's community Busy Being Flawsome for group coaching on discovering your potential beyond ANT-imposed boundaries at JumpseatCoaching.com.
My desire is for you to pause….give yourself the chance to percolate on this. Be Sherlock-like and ignite curiosity.
The reason I want you to stop believing your past should have been different is because when we’re past-focused we can start to feel “meh” about life. Being past-focused can make life feel like you’re pushing a big bolder up a really steep mountain. A struggle, something to survive.
As you start to flip the script, start to focus on the future life becomes exciting and compelling.
I also want to be real with you here on this podcast. Teaching your brain new ways of believing is work. It’s ongoing. It takes being willing to feel all the feels, being present with yourself, thinking about your thinking, and deciding on purpose what you want to think.
Yes, you can get the “how-to’s” from books, webinars, podcasts, videos, etc. Here is what I know….success in every area of life….whether you’re trying to exit the drink, over drinking shame & regret cycle or doubling or tripling your income, or if you want to have a better relationship with your spouse or your kids….whatever it is you’re wanting to transform….success comes from 20% of what you learn from books, podcasts, workshops, seminars, courses, etc. and 80% comes from mindset.
What I’m sharing with you here on Aging Flipped is the mindset side of the equation. If you’d like to chat with me about how you can incorporate some of the same techniques and tools and strategies I’ve picked up along my journey that makes me a successful coach, whether it’s in my business as a leader of business masterminds or ending a decade of daily over drinking alcohol to effortlessly in control without feeling miserable or deprived or my journey with taking charge of my adult ADHD or transforming my relationship with myself from one of judge, jury, and executioner to being my own raving fan and falling in love with my flawsome self. No matter what your dream is, whatever you’re currently wanting to create ….. if you’re struggling to turn it into reality, I’d love to have a conversation with you.
I have opened up lots of space in my calendar for this month because I what you to be able to give yourself the gift of transformation. In honor of ADHD awareness month, I'm bringing you a special episode.
When you've got ADHD, getting support can be a traumatic experience.
It can be hard to describe what's happening for you.....
You can feel ashamed that you're not able to "get it together" like other people seem to be able to.
Today's podcast is a conversation between myself and my dear friend Jennifer. Jennifer is a self-proclaimed rebel, a stand-up comedian, and a former comedy club owner. She had always embraced her ‘party girl’ status as a badge of honor until the ramifications of her drinking and her impulsive lifestyle became destructive and unmanageable.
When Jennifer was diagnosed with adult ADHD in her 40s she realized that she had spent more than 20 years self-medicating her symptoms with alcohol. Drinking was the easiest and fastest way to shut off the constant chatter in her brain. She also discovered that alcohol abuse among people with ADHD is much more common than it is in people without the condition.
Jennifer and I both have ADHD. We're sharing our story. Sharing things that have worked for us and opening up the conversation so others don't feel so alone.
So, take a listen and let me know what you think. I know this is an important discussion for both the person with ADHD as well as the person who loves someone with ADHD.
The doors to Busy Being Flawsome are officially open! If you’re ready to get off of the hamster wheel of thinking, feeling like, and believing you're not good enough while hanging out with other women exiting the shame train, creating radical self-acceptance, and breaking through barriers, join us right now!
All this kind of thinking does is make us quit going after what we want the second something goes wrong.
Life is filled with quitting. We just aren't taught which quitting is good for us and which quitting is holding us back. Most of us associate quitting with being "bad." We only do it when things fall apart. We quit because we run out of willpower, we overdrink alcohol, overeat food, do some retail therapy or binge-watch TV after a bad day, or when we don’t do things perfectly.
None of those things are worth quitting over.
Listen to the episode to learn what you need to quit in order to stop feeling "meh" about life and start flipping that script in your head about what's possible for you in this season of life.
And, do me a favor after you listen. Take a screenshot, post why you loved it on social media, and tag me on Twitter
If you're ready to flip the script around what's possible for you in this season of life, join me inside Busy Being Flawsome.
I think this is, ultimately, the biggest freedom we have. People can do countless different things to us but they can’t tell us what we can make it mean. They can’t tell us how it should feel emotionally.
This realization is what began my journey to untangling many unwanted habits and behaviors. The biggest domino for me is eliminating my desire for alcohol.
This is also what’s giving me the freedom to create an epic life. The freedom to embrace all of life. To fall in love with my flawsome self!

Teri and I really dive into the Tiny Habits concept and BJ Fogg’s Behavior Model, which I’ve spoken about on this podcast before. She asks me some thought-provoking questions about these topics and I really explain how his framework allows for deeper awareness and understanding, which are major players in an EXIT from drinking.
Here is what we talk about:

I’m wrapping up my series on the Tiny Habits book and process! Today’s episode is all about going through some activities that act as tools within this process. These tools will assist you in really diving into your EXIT and allowing you to identify the behaviors that hold the key to positive change.
While these activities are easy to do, they can have a significant impact on how you look at where you can make changes in order to pursue the life that you want to live. How exciting is that?
Here is what I cover in this episode:
I’ve used these tools myself to facilitate my own EXIT, so I can tell you firsthand how useful they are in taking a step away from the drinking cycle. Now, all that’s left for you to do is to tap into them with me!

As I continue my series on the Tiny Habits book and training by BJ Fogg, I’m covering a new topic today: ability. This episode is all about ability, the ability chain, and specific prompts you can ask yourself here.
I have a deep-seated belief in the Tiny Habits book and BJ Fogg’s behavior model, and the ability piece is just as important as the past elements I’ve covered! The ability chain is an interesting aspect of the model, and I dive into the different pieces of it in this episode.
Here is what I cover in this episode:
Taking the time to uncover your thoughts through the prompts I provide on this episode will ignite your curiosity surrounding the way you currently operate and relate to alcohol. From there, you can start exploring how you can change your approach and - ultimately - make your EXIT.

We hear the term motivation a lot, but what does it actually mean? And furthermore, can it help us reach our goals, particularly when it comes to making our EXIT from drinking?
Understanding motivation and how unreliable it is when used alone to achieve a goal is of paramount importance when it comes to understanding BJ Fogg’s behavior model. That’s what I talk about in today's episode, which dives further into the Tiny Habits book and training that I’m a strong believer in.
Here is what I cover in this episode:
Gaining an understanding of motivations, competing motivations, and how they interact with our thoughts, prompts, and actions will help you to better pursue your EXIT from the drinking life. This is one small piece that makes a big difference in the way you approach your epic life!

So often, we have the urge to push away our emotions, especially when dealing with substance abuse issues. In fact, that could be a lot of the reason we decide to drink, because it’s a way to “take the edge off” of our emotions. But, I’ve come to learn that trusting myself to feel and experience my emotions has made a world of difference in living my epic life.
Understanding our behaviors is the first step in changing your approach to your emotions and beginning to unblock your EXIT. That’s what I talk about in today's episode, which focuses a lot on the Tiny Habits book and training that I’m a strong believer in.
Here is what I cover in this episode:
It’s really not about getting rid of any behaviors, but rather, untangling them to gain a better understanding of them. That’s what I want to help you to do in order to reach a better place in trusting yourself to feel and experience your emotions.

I talk a lot about you making your EXIT and utilizing the EXIT methodology to do so. But, do you really understand what that means or what the strategy associated with it is? That’s what I want to fill you in on in today’s episode.
When we don’t have a strategy, that’s when we end up floundering in our efforts to stop drinking. But the EXIT strategy helps you unblock your exit and make the change you’ve been yearning for.
Here are the different components of the EXIT strategy that I go over:
These six components of the EXIT strategy are key in helping you take a new approach to your EXIT: an approach that works! Choosing even one of these steps can help you get started on your journey towards an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Our beliefs are incredibly powerful, yet they’re something that silently guides us throughout life without much thought. Why is that? And how does that impact the way that we make our EXIT from drinking? In the episode, I tackle those very questions with my Power of Belief Training.
Our beliefs come from thoughts, and we have thousands of them every day running through our heads without us even realizing it. Changing a thought is the first step to changing our actions, and I want you to tap into that power to change your life for the better.
Here’s what I share in the episode:
Really examining, exploring, and experimenting with your beliefs will help you unblock your EXIT in ways you never thought possible. Trust me - let’s work on it together!

You didn’t think it could happen in your own home, did you?
Or that it could be the child you know from across the street?
How about the boy or girl whose face gets lost in the crowd because they don’t have a family and a solidified place to call home?
Human trafficking is all around us, and it is not just an international battle that we’re facing. Right here, right in front of us, it’s prevalent and we need to be more aware, start having those conversations with our kids, and look out for signs.
January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Every year since 2010, the President has dedicated the month to raising awareness about the different forms of human trafficking, also known as modern slavery, and educating people about this crime and how to spot it.
I want to really bring this forward and remove the stigma surrounding human trafficking, so I invited this week's guest, Catharine Paterno, to join me in this conversation and provide her own knowledge and experience. She is dedicated to serving all the families and children she meets and is beyond thrilled to be working for Opportunity. Cat is devoted to providing families with the support and resources they need to create happy, healthy, and safe environments for their children.
With the right resources at our disposal and this newfound knowledge from this podcast episode, you will know what signs to look out for and to help prevent human trafficking. Listen to the full episode to hear my conversation with Caterine Paterno on Human Trafficking Prevention Month and the role that addiction & substance abuse play in these situations.

On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I talk about how your common thought patterns are sabotaging your success with getting out of the toxic drinking cycle. It’s easy to fall into negative thought patterns, but there’s one word to avoid that can help change that.
Some of the topics I discuss in this episode are:
The way you think about yourself and talk to yourself dictates how you are. Sometimes, I know we find ourselves in a rut where it seems it’s impossible to change your thoughts. But it’s a practice pattern, meaning that when you do it so much, it becomes normal. Once you know the one word to change, your EXIT will become that much easier.
You’ve already embodied the EXIT mentality in other aspects of your life, and if you can do that with what you’ve already achieved, imagine how you can apply that to finally getting out of the cycle and knowing that you can achieve the impossible with exiting the drinking life.

It’s a hard fact to face, but the reality is that getting out of the cycle starts with changing the way you think. Once you’re able to do that, you can actually start achieving what you thought was impossible.
Some of the topics I discuss in this episode are:

You have already embodied the EXIT mentality in other aspects of your life, and if you can do that with what you’ve already achieved, imagine how you can apply that to finally getting out of the cycle! Know that you CAN achieve the impossible and exit the drinking life.

On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I’m conveying just how much the words we tell ourselves impact our ability to exit the drinking life.
The word “can’t” makes it into our vocabulary far too often, prompting us to feel deprived, restricted, and all out miserable. When we’re giving up drinking, we need to hack our brains and replace the “can’ts” with all of the positive reasons we’re looking to make a change.
Some of the topics and questions raised in this episode are:
I hope that this episode ignites your curiosity around the way you’re talking to yourself and what the words you use mean for your attitude towards your own exit strategy. Sometimes, allowing yourself to feel less deprived and more empowered is as simple as deleting a “can’t” and reframing your own thoughts.

On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I’m sharing my revelations on how nothing outside of us actually creates the feelings that exist inside of us. The reality is that we create our feelings and the experiences of our lives through our own thoughts and actions.
There are so many feelings that society imposes on us, dictating that we “should” feel a certain way when XYZ happens. But what happens when the opposite is true? I explore that here, along with how you can change your thoughts around alcohol throughout your EXIT journey.
Some of the topics and questions raised in this episode are:
I hope that this episode ignites your curiosity around the way you’re approaching your feelings and how you alter them with the power of your thoughts and mindset. As you make your EXIT from drinking, it can be hard to imagine who you’ll be or how you’ll be happy without your beverage of choice. But approaching your feelings and thoughts differently can go a long way in easing these worries.

On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I’m diving into how important it is to imagine a future you, free of the hold alcohol has on you. Our brains are wired to either assume we can’t reach this new version of ourselves or to think we’ll wake up a completely different person through this change. However, if you go about imagining this future you with the right frame of mind, it can be a really powerful part of your journey.
Some of the topics and questions raised in this episode are:
I hope that this episode brings awareness to the fact that even when it feels like a complete impossibility that one day alcohol will be an irrelevant part of your life. Imagining a future you where that’s the case can help you come out the other side.

When it comes to the impact alcohol has on our beautifully working human brains, there isn't a great deal of education. However what I've found work with my clients is this type of awareness brings them hope. A belief into the work of possibility for themselves. This simple shift helps them ease up on their internal shame and blame.
In today episode:
How coaching helped me: Hey there I’m Debi Talbert I’m so excited you are considering joining EXIT & Beyond Membership. I want to mention I’ve always had this passion for personal growth and development. I loved the things I was learning. Coaching really closed the gap for me. The tools and processes helped me end my turbulent relationship with alcohol, find freedom, discover a joy for life I never that would be possible for me and help others do the same in their lives. My fellow flight attendant’s sitting next to me on the Jumpseat became some of my first clients. This is how I came up with my business name and the name for methodology.
My goal is to help you make alcohol a small and irrelevant part of your life. To discover more joy and happiness in life and your relationships. First off, know that this happens to a lot of people. We wake up and feel terrible and think "that's it - no more hangovers. I'm done!" But, as the day goes on we start to feel better and the memory of how that hangover felt fades away. Then the usual cues hit and we start to falter. We start to think: "Maybe I can quit next week" or "One drink wouldn't be that bad" and we talk ourselves back into it.
This is very common and it has a lot to do with our perception of the cost vs the benefit of drinking. Early in the day we can feel the effects of drinking from the night before, and so the costs seem high and the benefits seem non-existent. However, as the day goes on the cost seems lower because we're feeling better and we're encountering all the things that trigger us to drink - stress, work, family - so the benefits of drinking seem higher. And when the benefits outweigh the costs, you guessed it, we decide to drink.
I’m talking about motivating ourselves by beating ourselves up. This is a huge issue because it not only hinders us from moving forward, but it’s also something that can be so insidious we don’t even see that it’s happening.
So in this episode, I’m sharing what beating yourself up can look like (it might not be what you think!) and why it’s actually detrimental to your success.
I’ll be giving you the low-down on why this behavior affects your journey and sharing tools to motivate yourself differently so you can quit the negative self-talk and feel better in all aspects of your life.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN:
Today, I want to talk about when it’s really hard to choose something to drink other than alcohol. I believe all of us have been there at one time or another because if it was always easy, then we wouldn’t still be talking about it, we wouldn’t have all the sober curious books, the mindful drinks movement, the variety of podcasts about getting, staying, remaining sober or drinking less alcohol.
When it feels really hard to make a different choice, our primitive brains, that part of our brain that’s just wanting to keep us alive, just really starts to go into overdrive.
We can start to let it take over and run the show, and then it’s all drama, it’s all horror, it’s all, “This is terrible. It’s too hard, I can’t do it,” and then before we know it, we’re back in our old patterns of avoiding our emotions and numbing out of our life with alcohol.
I want to talk to you about what to do when the journey of change really feeling challenging.
When you’re doing all of the things: examining your thoughts and beliefs, processing your urges and your negative emotions, you’re doing the thought work, you’re deciding to drink from a conscious decision instead of an unconscious automatic one, you’re taking care of yourself personally by moving your body more, getting as much rest as you can and choosing healthier foods and it is still just hard.
We often think like, “I thought by this point, it should be easier.” We start thinking, “Something’s going wrong. It shouldn’t be this hard. It’s easier for other people. I wish it were that easy for me. Look at that girl, she’s drinking wine all the time and look how good she has it. It’s not fair. Why do I have to suck at making this easy? Everyone else seems to be thinking this is easy and it’s still not for me. I’ve been at this a long time. It shouldn’t require so much mental effort anymore. I shouldn’t have to work so hard at this. It’s really discouraging that this seems so challenging still. I don’t know if I can keep this up forever.”
These are the stories that our brain offers us. Oftentimes my clients will say, “I don’t want to have to live like this forever. I want to be able to just not want it. I want to be able to have a drink every once in a while and not go off the deep end.
And those are our thoughts about our experience of doing what it takes to exit the drinking life and make alcohol a small and irrelevant part of our lives.
We think we’re just telling it like it is, “Like it is hard. I’m just being real. I’m just telling the truth. I’m just sharing what it’s like for me,” but in actuality what we’re doing is we’re stacking the pain, we’re stacking the discomfort and the difficulty and the challenge. We’re stacking the resistance and making the experience of changing what you drink even more uncomfortable with the way that we’re thinking about it.
So many of us believe life with less or no alcohol in it is too hard or not something that we can sustain.
And if you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while or if you’ve known you needed to exit the life of drinking, over-drinking, shame, and regret for a while and you just haven’t been doing it, I’m talking to you.
We just have this idea of like, “It’s going to be too hard,” or “There’s going to be a right time to do it,” or “I just need to get through this difficult period, then I’m going to be able to focus on it.”
But what’s actually too hard to sustain is doing all of the things that help us change what we drink while thinking terrible feeling thoughts about ourselves our lives, our bodies, and the process of exiting the drinking.
Focusing on what we’re missing out on and how other people are responding to us making this change all of that.
It’s the way that we are choosing to interpret the journey that causing the true pain and suffering.
One way of approaching this is encouraging yourself to say yes to the process, to all of it.
It kind of reminds me of being pregnant. Saying yes to the entire experience.
The morning sickness, the tiredness, the extra weight, the mood swings, the moving growing human inside of us.
How about that? Say yes to the entire process saying yes to the process, especially the hard parts.
For those of you who’ve never been pregnant. Think of a time in your life when you signed on for something. Something you know would involve saying yes to the sucky parts as well as the wonderful parts.
This is how I like to think about doing hard things.
But….let’s just talk about it in the framework of exiting the drinking life. Ending that over-drinking cycle. I truly do get it. I’ve been on it, in it. I tried changing what I drank for 7 years. Trust me, I get it.”
But this is the way I believe committing to and saying yes to the entire process is a really great way to thinking about it. A way that can really serve you when it feels hard.
Imagine you’ve signed on to get your Masters. You’re there for the degrees. You know you’re going to have to take some classes that you really aren’t going to like it because it’s part of the program. It’s just how it is. You take a certain number of classes every semester or maybe you’re just taking it, one class, at a time…..
And your current class might be allowing urges. Last semester maybe you took Examining Your Beliefs and maybe you took Fully Dialing in on your emotions.
So if you were taking these classes to get your Master’s Degree would you expect it to be easy?
Most people wouldn’t go into this journey of getting their Master’s Degrees and believe or think things like “What do you mean this is challenging?
I thought this was just going to be something I was going to completely coast through.
Like I’m completely shocked. Why is this so hard? Why isn’t it getting easier? I mean, Gosh, now I’m doing this thing and this seems hard too. Now I’m in this class, this class seems even harder than the classes I took last semester.”
They get harder as you go along sometimes. Of course, we would expect it to be hard. We would, of course, expect ourselves to work hard.
Most people go into this thinking and believing “Okay, this is the real deal. Like I’m going to have to buckle down. I’m going to really have to make sure I focus and study.”
What if that was the way you approached your exit journey. As though nothing was going wrong when it was hard? When allowing urges is hard, you’re like, “Yes,” yes to this, because you know why? Because I want the results of being in control of alcohol instead of it being in control of me.
Yes, I really want to master trusting myself to figure this out. I want to untangle the beliefs and thoughts keeping me stuck. I want to achieve my goal of exiting the drinking life, ending the love-hate relationship I have with myself.
This journey is not one you can “cheat the system” with. You can’t sneak your way through the course or copy your neighbor to get the end results you want. In order to exit the drinking life for good, to make alcohol small and irrelevant, you have to say yes to the hard work. Yes to all of it.
You have to say yes to the days when your urges are pretty easy to process and they’re pretty mild and they’re really not that strong and yes to the days where they feel super intense.
You have to say yes to the days where you are so restless and all you want to do is drink wine to calm your body down and yes to the days where it was really a great day and it was really pretty easy and things were simple for you.
You have to say yes to having your thoughts totally dialed in and yes, to create a creatively constructed plan to attend an event in order to stay with your plan of not consuming alcohol. Probably extremely uncomfortable the first time, maybe even the 2nd, or 3rd time but you commit to making it work because of the end result you want.
You have to say yes to getting enough sleep when you can and yes to sleepless nights and exhaustion the next day. By saying yes to all of it, we’re dropping the resistance, we’re dropping the belief that something is going wrong and then it should be different than it is.
It shouldn’t be any different than it is.
The belief that it should be different, it should be easier, it shouldn’t be so challenging is what’s making it so much more challenging.
It’s the opposite of what we think.
We think we’re just telling the truth, but if it was supposed to be different, it would be different.
It’s not different, it is exactly how it should be.
In fact, the harder it is, the more of an amazing accomplishment it is on the other side when you’ve achieved it.
The more chances you have to evolve as a human being into your highest and best self.
This is how you really grow.
Think about how great it will feel when you’ve come through this class.
Like you’ve gone through this process, this program. You’re going to come out on the other end feeling so accomplished, but this opportunity is only there for you if you say yes to the experience.
What many of you do is you take a couple of classes or maybe you start your first class and then you’re just like, “This seems hard. I’m just going to back out of it. This isn’t a good time. I can’t focus on this.” And then you have to start again. Your credits don’t transfer. You have to start all over again.
Some of you make it to the second semester, senior year, and then you go, “You know what? Forget it,” and then you have to start at the beginning again, and that’s completely fine, but just recognize what you’re doing when it’s the second semester, senior year and you’re just going, “Yeah, screw it.” You’re not saying yes to the experience. The key is to make this journey feel “less hard” is to say yes to the easy and the hard, the wins and the losses, the failures upon failures, the mistakes upon mistakes. It’s all part of the process.
Besides saying yes, what else can we do to keep ourselves going forward in the face of incredible challenges?
Sometimes it’s really, really hard.
Things are happening in your life or you’re trucking along and now there are some significant challenges. Maybe you’ve had the loss of a close family member or friend, maybe it’s something really big that is happening. Maybe you’re having a big relationship change. Maybe there’s some big-time stuff happening at work and it’s so easy then to be like, “I can’t take on one more thing. I barely was holding it together with this drinking less thing anyway. I’m just going to have to take a break,” and you know what taking a break means, it means just getting in the way back.
Another tool you can use when you catch yourself wanting to break away and quit moving towards your desired outcome is to bring the focus back to just this one present moment. The easiest way to do that is to focus on your breath.
Truly focus on it. Bring your mind to your breath and let yourself notice right where you are right then. When we are in the “I can’t take it any long” mindset, we’ve taking our focus too far out into the future. We’re projecting the worst case in our heads, even if we aren’t saying it out loud.
By bringing yourself to your own breath, this brings you into the current, present moment.
Because when it’s hard we can tend to catastrophes about the challenge.
We think, “Well today was really hard, so there’s no way I’m going to be able to keep this up long term,” or “This whole week has been hard,” or “This whole month has been hard. There’s no way I’m going to be able to keep this up on going.” “I can’t see myself being able to do this month after month, week after week.” “I don’t know how I’m going to hold it together while I’m on vacation,” or through the holidays or over the summer or whatever is a challenge.
What I want to offer to you is that you don’t have to entertain any of those concerns in your head. They seem really important and necessary to think about, but I promise you, you really don’t. All you need to think about is what you’re going to do today.
And when your brain tells you it’s too hard and you’ll never be able to keep it up, you can just agree with this.
That’s again saying, yes, you’re not it, you’re not going, “Oh, I shouldn’t be thinking that I’m not going to be able to keep it up,” instead going, “Yeah, maybe I won’t be able to keep it up forever, but I will keep it up today.”
That is saying yes to the hardship and the difficulty. It’s acknowledging your experience and not asking yourself to think any differently about the future. You’re not saying that the way that you’re thinking about it as wrong or that it ought to be different. Instead, you’re just reminding yourself that you don’t have to make any of those decisions today.
Some people will say, “We'll wait, if I decide that I’m not going to really drink anymore, seriously, I’m not going to like have a champagne toast at my daughter’s wedding?” Well, considering that she’s three right now, we probably don’t need to worry about it. It’s probably not something that you have to decide on right now, but your brain is going to go to that. Like, “What about this? What about that? You’re never going to have this. What if you go to Italy, you’re not going to have any wine?” I don’t need to know. I don’t need to decide that today. When that opportunity and that experience arises, I will make the best decision for myself for that day.
Many of us talk about living in the present and all you have is the present moment. And there’s a lot of truth to that, and we can apply that to our experience of changing what we are drinking too.
because so much of what feels the most uncomfortable is when we’re looking into the future and creating a story of how awful it’s going to be and/or when we look to the past and we tell ourselves a story of how awful and horrible and difficult it was and uncomfortable. And then we project that into the future and go, “Well, that’s exactly how it’s going to be. I wasn’t able to keep it up then so I won’t be able to keep it up in the future as well.”
This way you don’t have to resist your experience so much. You say yes to today. Today is an unplanned day. The end. That is what you’re doing. Combine saying yes to all of it, the whole experience, to dropping the resistance and then to just committing to doing what you said you were going to do today and knowing that you don’t need to worry about the rest of that. When your brain offers up, “What about this? What about that? What am I going to do here? What am I going to have then?” Just remember, “I don’t need to decide that right now. I will decide when it’s necessary for me to decide that.”
This is huge, huge stuff. Really, really helpful.

Keep noticing the thoughts that come up for you when drinking shows up in your consciousness - they all point to your beliefs. You may notice it in the patterns of thoughts or how your moods shift throughout the day.
Make sure you are journaling and recording how you feel each day. If possible, record your thoughts and emotions around the parts of the day when you experience the most triggers. Being aware of how you're reacting mentally and emotionally can go a long way toward getting a sense of your beliefs.

The idea for this episode came to me while attending a networking event this morning. As I record this it’s the Tuesday before Thanksgiving here in the United States. The episode will go live on Thanksgiving day. In addition to sharing what you do and who it is you help, the coordinate of the meeting asked people to share something they are grateful for.
For me, I’m actually grateful for all the changes 2020 has brought into my life. When I pause and truly think it through, COVID has forced me to re-decide a lot of things in my life. The company I’d worked for since 1983 offered an amazing retirement buyout package, this was actually offered in the exact same year they’d paid out 2 months of pay for a bonus. The highest bonus payout in the companies history.
WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER
FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE
If you think about how most people live their lives – most is not even an exaggeration either – most people live their life on default. They are living at the effect of decisions that were made by no conscious choice. They’re just defaulting into previously made decisions or un-thoughtful decisions.
People keep drinking as they have, they eating in ways that adversely affect their bodies, live in the same house, stay married to the same person, have the same job because it’s something they decided oh so long ago.
We aren’t taught to pause and rethink these things unless something forces us to.
2020 has forced many of us to rethink plenty of things in our lives.
I believe that decisions are where we can find the power to create the lives we want to create and evolve into the highest version of ourselves.
Unfortunately, and inexplicably, most of us stop making decisions on purpose as we get older.
We simply fall into patterns of living out the decisions we have made in the past or think if we don’t decide, then we can avoid the discomfort.
This pattern we allowed ourselves to fall into is part of the reason everything happening around us right now feels so darn hard.
A decision is simply a commitment to a thought, feeling, and action that creates a result.
First, everything is optional.
The longer I apply and coach using EXIT principles - uncovering my thoughts, bringing in awareness as to how the thoughts make me feel and how my feelings are affecting my actions, reactions or my nonaction, create the results in my life, the more I realize that the most painful trap we can fall into is the thought/belief that there is not a choice.
When we forget there is always a choice, we get stuck in suffering because we believe we have to live out the “negative” decisions of our past. We start to feel like our life is a list of “have to-dos”.
When I remind my clients there is nothing they have to do and that they have complete free will, they are often very confused.
Many of them have not considered that much of what they are currently doing is something they either really want to do (take care of their kids, work the job because of the paycheck, clean the house because they like how it looks and feels, cook the food because they like eating healthy) or that they could stop doing if they chose to (clean the house themselves, spend time with family they rather not, follow someone else’s manual for them)
The process of evaluating your life in a way that gives you your power back is imperative
What’s interesting is that it often doesn’t mean you will change what you are doing, but it will change how you feel about it and how you think about it.
This can be one of the most freeing exercises to take your power back in your life
When you understand that there is always a choice.
That you don’t have to continue the decisions of your past and you don’t have to follow anyone else’s idea of how you should live you change the question you ask yourself.
Your power question then becomes - Would I choose this again today?
When you understand that there's always a consequence to every thought you think (the result that comes from thinking the thought), you can take ownership of the results, desirable AND undesirable, that you currently have.
Then from that place, you can decide if you want to keep signing up for mandatory suffering, or if you want to take advantage of an opportunity that involves voluntary discomfort but also the promise of less suffering for the rest of your life.
Most of your first times with new experiences in your life alcohol free will bring up thoughts leading to uncomfortable emotions and feelings. Know this is an amazing opportunity to create new neural pathways in your brain.
The more you experience getting through events without drinking, the easier it gets. Eventually, even if you're surrounded by alcohol and people drinking, you'll notice the old thoughts leading to worry won't be there.
If you have a question you'd like me to help you with, then let me know here - https://www.jumpseatcoaching.com/AskDebi
How often have you told yourself that your drinking isn’t “that bad”
How often have you talked about needing to get a handle on your over drinking but never make the decision to do what it requires to actually do it?
How often have you blown off your goals, telling yourself that you'll start again on Monday?
To me, this is locking yourself in your own prison from the inside because we want to avoid voluntary discomfort.
And by avoiding it, we're actually signing up for the mandatory suffering that's to going to come.
In today's episode, I’m going to share how igniting curiosity is the key to opening the prison door.

It hit me that Halloween is just a few days away. Which means the holiday season is about to begin.
Personally, I think the holiday season is the best, best time to get your ticket and board the transformation flight to alcohol freedom. I know, I know many of you are thinking I’m crazy right about now….
Let me just tell you why I think this is the ideal time to allow yourself to tackle exiting the drinking life inside a program like EXIT & Beyond. All times are actually a perfect time to do it, but I think this is a great time because of all of the holidays that are coming.
During this pandemic, most people are spending their days at home and many have found themselves over drinking, overeating, and gaining weight. Although more alcohol and food are normal during stressful and overwhelming times, “quarantine” should not be used as an excuse to put keep over drinking. So today I want to discuss how to overcome the defeatist attitude you may be facing and help you push through this coming year healthier and stronger than ever.
Listen in as I share four reasons why you should not wait for your current situation to be over before you tackle exiting the drinking life. You will learn how to combat negative thought patterns and take advantage of opportunities as they come into your life.
If you are ready to love yourself to a place where you no longer need food or alcohol to get through tough times, this is the episode for you.

There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so ~ William Shakespeare.
We have neurons that are firing and wiring in our brains. When they’re firing and wiring they send off chemical reactions and we just call those things feelings. Our feelings are what drive our actions. Our feelings come from our thoughts.
How would life be different if we stopping thinking of our feelings as good or bad or right or wrong? Would this shift allow us to end the over drinking habit?
Listen is as I show my insight.

I get questions like these a lot...."What is wrong with me? Why can't I figure this over drinking thing out?" "Why can I just cut back and stop thinking about alcohol?"
My short answer to all of these questions is BELIEF.
Today, I'm inviting you to listen in as I share what beliefs are. How belief affects our actions. Plus what you can do to start uncovering your beliefs.
As long as a belief exists for you that alcohol is benefiting you in some way, you won’t be able to take the actions to change your relationship with alcohol.
Listen in this week as I share some of the most common excuses and reasons people give me for why their situation is different or unique, and why your brain will always try to prove that to you.
I’m highlighting some of the lessons I teach here that are key to changing your relationship with alcohol, and from there, you’ll be able to start uncovering your own personal beliefs so you can see for yourself what's truly been holding you back.

We can accept the pain that will inevitably come along in life and be more alive for it.
We don’t need to suffer.
When we argue with our pain or think that we shouldn’t be feeling it, we suffer.
We find all sorts of ways to create unnecessary emotional suffering.
But when we’re suffering, we’re not showing up fully for life.
We’re robbing ourselves of the life we could have.
In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into emotional suffering and why we create pain around our pain.
In our modern lives, we’re called on to evolve in this new way. We don’t need to just survive; we need to thrive. And learning to stop suffering is a huge part of that.

Because we've used alcohol for so long to avoid feeling our feelings, we may not not how to actually allow ourselves to feel them.
This is the audio portion of a video training I did teaching a 7 step process for feeling your feelings.
In this episode, we'll dive deep into the idea of necessary darkness and crossing the river of misery. We're going to be uncomfortable on this journey of life and transforming our relationship with alcohol, no matter what we do.
We get to choose whether we want the discomfort of staying the same, or the discomfort of transformation.
What You’ll Learn from this Episode:
The poem referenced in the Episode
To love ourselves long-term is to attend a thousand funerals of the person we used to be. The person we are too exhausted to be any longer. The person we don’t recognize inside ourselves anymore. The person we grew out of. The person we never ended up growing into. We so badly want ourselves to get our spark back when it burns out, to become speedily found when we are lost. But it is not our job to hold ourselves accountable to the person we used to be. It’s our job to travel between each version and to honor what emerges along the way. Sometimes it will be an even more luminescent flame. Sometimes it will be a flicker that disappears and temporarily floods the room with a perfect and necessary darkness.

Form many, the fight is what brings them over drinking. Turning to their friend alcohol to help numb away the pain of their reality and the fight.
I can show you how to stop beating yourself up so you can stop over drinking and love your life.
The most difficult and complicated part of exiting the drinking life is the decision to start.
During my 7 year struggle to drink less my thoughts about the process were all about relentless, unwavering willpower and deprivation. Basically, a horrible, turbulent trip of resist, deny, resist, deny, cave, resist, deny, resist day after day, week after week and never feeling happy about alcohol's role in my life.
It wasn't until I began to decided to go against the grain and explore how I was attempting to drink less did I make alcohol irrelevant in my life.
Understanding the way the brain is designed by default is key.

Life appeared, to the outside world, to be going really well for me.
I traveled the world as a flight attendant. With expenses paid, I enjoyed dinners with my military child stationed overseas and sipped wine in France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
I drank with coworkers on my layovers. At home, I enjoyed cocktails with friends and family. Weekends included brunch and mimosas. I attended networking events with free flowing alcohol. Date nights with my husband involved dinner and drinks. And of course, when I hosted family events, I proudly served a wide variety of alcoholic beverages.
Every event or gathering involved drinking. In my world this was “normal”.
I wasn’t the only one drinking this way; everyone I knew drank the same way. It was just part of life. I enjoyed this lifestyle for years, never wondering why I was always the one to finish the wine bottle or if other people went home from a party and helped themselves to another drink. On our flights back across the Atlantic, our crew laughed together as we tried to piece together the night.
We had a great time filling in the blanks for each other.
I didn’t learn until years later that my style of drinking is called Gray Area Drinking (GAD).
In this episode I share what GAD is and what to do if you discover you are in the messy middle.

The drinking life is a cycle which can spiral out of control. This out of control is unintentional, we may not ever know we are doing it until something terrible happens. Then one day we wake up an realize we've got to make a change. However, unless we address this #1 thing, change continually eludes us.
