We have reasons to write, some self-centered, some altruistic. We have reasons why we want to write, and we have reasons why people want to read our work. But writing is hard. It requires focus and commitment. How do you find that commitment and lock it in? You do so by aligning internal and external incentives. That is, you ask yourself, "Why do I write?" And you ask yourself, "Why should I write?" These two questions will give you the internal and external incentives needed to be committed to your writing.
