Exponential growth of unstructured data is putting a tremendous strain on the legacy three-tier architecture of VDI environments. For mission-critical applications in various industries like banking, capital markets, insurance and healthcare, there is a need to support highly available synchronous data replication to ensure high level platform protection and availability. Providing this functionality is key for a business to function unhindered. Federation is an exciting and important new feature that was added to Nutanix Objects in the 4.0 release (Spring 2023). It enables a global namespace to be created across multiple Nutanix object stores, even if they are thousands of miles apart in entirely different geographic locations. Buckets hosted by these different object stores then appear to exist within a single object store, offering a consolidated view of the data.

In this multi-part series, the goal is to first familiarize you with the solution and then provide guidance on preparing to deploy Flow Network Security and help you learn the constructs that form your policy framework.
So, what is Flow Network Security? By now, you may have heard the name, read about it or had a conversation about it with a Nutanix employee. First off, and in most basic terms, Flow Network Security is built-in security for workloads that run on Nutanix AHV, our native hypervisor. Think of it more as a feature or solution rather than a separate “product”.
While AHV has been available for many years, one thing became obvious as customers were looking to have more security options in their Nutanix environment; we didn’t have a Nutanix-developed solution to provide network security.
Enter microsegmentation. Network virtualization got its beginning as a Stanford University research project that ultimately became a startup and commercial solution from Nicira, circa 2007. VMware acquired Nicira in 2012 and the solution became, as you may know, NSX, which offered software-defined networking and microsegmentation functionality. Since this time, other software companies have brought their own solutions to market.

Within Nutanix we have Replication Factor (How many data copies are written in the cluster) and Redundancy Factor (how many nodes/disks can go offline). Both can have a value of 2 and 3. What is what is explained here: Blog Post.
So, when we have a larger cluster, we always recommend using RF3 (Redundancy Factor 3) as the risk is higher that you have multiple nodes/disks go offline at the same time.
During trainings and onsite customer work I often get the question, "what will happen if multiple nodes go offline in Redundancy Factor 2?" In this blog post I will explain different scenarios and their behaviors.

The results are in! With NVIDIA’s newest GPUs designed for virtual desktops and applications, you can address a wider variety of use cases than you could ever before. In our independent testing using the NVIDIA® nVector benchmarking tool, we saw that a single A16 GPU could support 64 virtual desktops, each with 2vCPUs and 1GB framebuffer profiles, per node. With two A16 cards installed we were able to scale to 128, albeit we would recommend a high-performance CPU when scaling to 128 desktops. In a minimal Nutanix® configuration of a three node cluster that equates to 384 users per cluster, all having access to 1GB of framebuffer profile!

Data is the lifeblood of today’s enterprises, and an extremely lucrative target for attackers. Ransomware, which essentially holds data “hostage” by encrypting it until a ransom is paid by the company, is increasingly common and becoming more advanced every day.
In fact, some estimates say that a ransomware attack occurs every 11 seconds. These attacks can cripple an organization, causing unexpected downtime and wreaking havoc on an enterprise’s operations, production, customer service, and even future reputation.
It can cost a lot of time, effort, and money to recover from a ransomware attack. Simply having a backup of your data is no longer sufficient, because attackers can now infiltrate backups as well.
In addition to practicing “defense in depth,” IT professionals are now beginning to see the critical need for immutable backups as a last line of defense from ransomware and other attacks—and a smart way to maintain a successful strategy for business continuity and disaster recovery.

Although Kubernetes was originally designed to run stateless workloads, the technology has matured over time and enterprises are increasingly adopting the platform to run their stateful applications. In a survey conducted by the Data on Kubernetes community, 90% of the respondents believe that Kubernetes is ready for stateful workloads, and 70% of them are already running them in production with databases taking the top spot. Having the ability to standardize different workloads on Kubernetes and ensure consistency are seen as the key factors that drive value for businesses.
Nutanix provides an industry-leading HCI platform that is ideal for running cloud-native workloads running on Kubernetes at scale. The Nutanix architecture offers better resilience for both Kubernetes platform components and application data. With the addition of each HCI node, apart from scaling the Kubernetes compute nodes, there is an additional storage controller as well which results in improved storage performance for your stateful applications.
The Nutanix Unified Storage is made available to cloud-native applications with the Nutanix CSI driver. Applications use standard Kubernetes objects such as PersistentVolumeClaims, PersistentVolumes, and StorageClasses to access its capabilities. The CSI driver also enables users to take Persistent Volume snapshots using API objects VolumeSnaphot, VolumeSnapshotContent, and VolumeSnapshotClass. Snapshots represent a point-in-time copy of a volume and can be used to provision a new volume or to restore existing volumes to the previous snapshotted data. OpenShift Container Platform deploys the snapshot controller and the related API objects as part of the Nutanix CSI Operator as described in Blog 3.

Purpose
The infrastructure for Nutanix Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) supports a tenant cluster and a production virtual private cloud (VPC) for each customer. Customers generally have production VMs running in their on-premises cluster, which is connected to the DRaaS VPC using an IPsec tunnel. This is used by the DRaaS workflow to replicate on-premises production data.
During a disaster recovery situation or while running disaster recovery tests, VMs will failover from on-premises to the DRaaS cluster. When this occurs, all VMs in one subnet of an on-premises network (e.g., 192.168.10.0/24) usually failover to DRaaS. If the customer chooses to preserve the IP, VMs in DRaaS come up with the same IPs as on-premises (e.g., 192.168.10.0/24 network).
In this type of disaster recovery situation, customers can choose which critical VMs are replicated to DRaaS. But in those cases, on-premises VMs cannot communicate with VMs in DRaaS.

In this blog we will demonstrate the seamless integration of Bloomberg multi-function keyboards within a Frame session via the Frame App. For those unfamiliar, Bloomberg keyboards are specialized devices used by financial services customers to interface with the Bloomberg Anywhere™ solution. The keyboard not only includes Bloomberg-specific function and menu keys, but also built-in speakers as well as an integrated biometric fingerprint scanner for multi-factor authentication into Bloomberg Anywhere.

I recently read a blog post from a storage vendor attempting to make the case that HCI (Hyper-converged Infrastructure) is not a good fit for healthcare. They used their strategic partner’s HCI solution, VMware VSAN as the example, but tried to apply their reasoning to all HCI. My first thought was to wonder what Nutanix’s hundreds of happy healthcare customers would think of such an argument. I often meet with customers who make the case to ME on why Nutanix is a great fit for their life-critical applications.
I’ll highlight some of those reasons in this post. And because I’m familiar with the author and his background, I’ll assume that he was writing about the healthcare provider market, and not payors, pharma, or some other sub-market. So, my comments will also be focused on HCI and healthcare providers.

Nutanix’s Frame® desktop-as-a-service, with its ability to deliver virtual desktops and applications on non-persistent virtual machines, is a key part of the security posture of many customers. When combined with Frame application mode, which eliminates the Windows® Desktop and focuses the end user on a single set of published applications, Frame provides enterprises with a secure way to deliver Windows applications and not lose control of the underlying data. As a part of our Enterprise Profiles capability, Nutanix released a feature that allows Frame administrators to further secure their Frame environment by forcing users with Enterprise Profiles to be logged in as a non-administrative local Windows user. Recently, this feature has been turned into a setting that can be applied to any Frame account that is not using the Frame Domain Join feature.

Provisioning new databases and cloning database requests make up a hefty portion of a database administrator’s (DBAs) workload. As reported in Forrester’s Total Economic Impact survey for Nutanix Era, database provisioning is time consuming, tedious, and often requires additional approvals for new systems to support the new provision. DBAs reported that “to handle the capacity of existing database management and incoming requests, the DBA teams often needed to work overtime and weekends” (Forrester p7). As one respondent noted: “We get requests for new databases all the time, but we have to have a server before we can even start. Our database and operations teams were resource-constrained, and a request could take up to two weeks to deliver. That was just too long” (Forrester p7).
The Forrester study also noted that many organizations lack standard workflow procedures that can streamline the provisioning process for more effective procedures in database provisioning. Surveyed customers commented that, when workflow best practices are applied holistically across several different database types, common provisioning mistakes could be avoided.
Nutanix has partnered with ServiceNow, Inc. to integrate Nutanix Era™ into the ServiceNow® platform. Using the ServiceNow Nutanix Era Plugin for Database Management, Era and ServiceNow customers can use standard workflow processes to ease database provisioning even further.
Nutanix Era can increase database provisioning by 97% through its one-click database management and control plane as noted in Forrester’s TEI report for Era. This process can be streamlined even further through the integration with ServiceNow’s digital workflow processes.

This series aims to share the seemingly infinite number of ways you can optimize a Windows environment, with something for beginners as well as administrators familiar with optimizations but looking to deliver an even better experience within their environment.

Dramatic Increase in Remote Workforce
Working from home, or is it living at work? Nearly everyone has been affected, either directly or indirectly, by the shift to remote work.
Although remote work had been increasingly common, the pandemic caused a spike that has fundamentally altered attitudes by both employees and employers. FlexJobs.com reports that “a Gartner survey of company leaders found that 80% plan to allow employees to work remotely at least part of the time after the pandemic, and 47% will allow employees to work from home full-time. In a PwC survey of 669 CEOs, 78% agree that remote collaboration is here to stay for the long-term. In a recent FlexJobs survey, 65% of respondents report wanting to be full-time remote employees post-pandemic, and 31% want a hybrid remote work environment—that’s 96% who desire some form of remote work.”

With remote working now the new normal, it is challenging to send skilled IT professionals to data centers to install new equipment. Although Nutanix clusters have always been quick to install and configure, there was still a requirement to send a trained IT technician to site to run the Foundation software for deployment, usually connected to a local laptop. For large-scale or multiple sites, this can be a costly exercise.

Calm is a multi-cloud application management framework delivered by Nutanix. Calm provides application automation and lifecycle management natively integrated into the Nutanix Platform. With Calm, applications are defined via simple blueprints that can be easily created using industry-standard skills and control all aspects of the application’s lifecycle, such as provisioning, scaling, and cleanup. These blueprints can be created through the UI or via code with a Python-based DSL, including seamless conversion.
