We are honoured today to be joined by Stephen Shedletzky, or better known as Shed. Shed is an igniter, speaker and master facilitator with Simon Sinek, Inc.
Shed is in the process of writing an important book on psychological safety with the working title of “Speak Up Culture. When leaders truly listen people step up.”
In the words of Amy Edmondson, psychological safety is about high candor and low fear. Converse to what many may think, psychological safety is not about having a lovey dovey environment.
We need to strive for an environment where people feel they can openly speak their mind without fear of judgement or retribution.
Some of the keys to creating a speak up culture include:
The 2 components are to encourage and reward.
Without psychological safety we open up our organisation’s to learned helplessness and learned fear
A good place to start is be open and transparent about your own weaknesses and strengths. This demonstrates that it is okay to speak up; to put up your hand; to admit mistakes; to admit you need help with something.
