**Recorded at Upaya Zen Center, August 11th, 2006

Time: 56:15**

Roshi Joan opens the Summer Ango Sesshin with the words to "show up."

She explore the bonds that link us as practitioners. And she reminds practitioners to be present for whatever shows up, be it illness or bliss. She describes sesshin as a ceremony, a rite of passage. She notes that the word ceremony comes from the same root as "cure." We are curing ourselves of our preferential mind. She reminds us that the practice is a pilgrimage, a pilgrimage into the heart. She talks about entrainment, the experience of unity and its relationship to mind training.

We gratefully thank our friend of Upaya, Ottmar Liebert for his contribution of music and bells used in our Podcasts.

**The Essence of Big Mind August 18-20

Instructor: Genpo Roshi and special concert by Ottmar Liebert**

Ango ends with the Big Mind process, a direct exploration of our true nature. Genpo Roshi draws from over thirty years of Zen teaching and Western therapeutic practices to bring forth a radical technique that can unlock the wisdom of Zen with directness and clarity. The Big Mind process gives one a profound perspective on our great potential to be free. Participants learn to sit with non-seeking mind in its vastness, rather than grasping after the truth. On Saturday evening, renowned musician Ottmar Liebert offers a special concert. Genpo Roshi is Abbot of Kanzeon Zen Center and author of many books on Zen.

Tuition: $190 members; $220 non-members; plus lodging.

**Zen Calligraphy on a Large Scale August 25-27

Instructor: Kazuaki Tanahashi Sensei**

This unusual workshop offers the practice of calligraphy on a large scale, working with big brushes, paper and canvas. The retreat takes place in the temple as well as out-of-doors to accommodate the big scale of the calligraphy and painting. In the tradition of Asian calligraphy, we engage the creative process by reproducing ideograms and paintings from ancient Chinese masterpieces but on a large scale. We interpret these works and explore creativity and how it works in our life as a source of insight and joy. For beginners and seasoned artists. Kazuaki Tanahashi is a master calligrapher, Dogen scholar, and social activist.

Tuition: $190 members; $210 non-members; $50 materials; plus lodging.

**Sustaining the Caregiving Impulse September 2

Instructor: Troy Fernandez**

This one-day retreat/workshop offers insights into the challenges of "empathy fatigue" and practical solutions for those who work with and live in a multicultural context. A powerful step in achieving "oneness" involves reflecting deeply into the "otherness" that exists in our world. Human service workers, teachers, and counselors will acquire the contemplative tools they need to enhance and sustain their ability to nurture others while nurturing themselves. Participants will also leave having established a supportive network of professional and personal friendships. Troy Fernandez is deputy director for the National Hispanic Cultural Center, formerly with the New Mexico Department of Health.

Tuition: $75 members; $100 non-members; includes lunch
