How do our feelings about bodies (ours and other people’s) shape our experience of the world? Weight stigma is a real force in our society and affects us all – whether we’re tackling body images issues or not.

In this episode of the She Mentors podcast, Mindset and Confidence coach Andrea Westbrook discusses how transforming the way we think about bodies that don’t fit society’s notion of 'ideal' is the key to conquering our fears, overcoming negative self-talk and reconnecting to our own confidence.

“I think there's a perception that you can control it. But it's so complicated. And there's so many things that contribute to a person how a person carries and holds on to weight that it is not just around how you eat, which is the main message we get. So we do think it is controllable. But in reality, it's a lot more complicated than that.

“It could be ability, it's genetics. It's your mental health. Or there's apparently there's something like 59 different factors that can feed into how a person holds and carries their weight.”

We discuss

👉 Growing up with body image issues and ‘feeling different’
👉 How body size discrimination presents in the workplace
👉 Identifying the fears that are holding you back (rejection, judgement, failure, etc)
👉 How to tap into your confidence and self-worth
👉 Positioning yourself as a leader

Through her work with Young Professional Women Australia, Kate Boorer recognises opportunities for women to gain clarity of what they want; own their value; and ask for what they are worth. She regularly helps women negotiate career progression opportunities, remuneration and new roles.

In this podcast episode we dig deep into the "uncomfortable" conversation around money; how to ask for a pay rise; the "right time" to ask; and what you should say to your manager or boss to get your request across the line.

Absolutely loved chatting with Kate on this topic and can highly recommend her book Core Confidence, and the resources she has put together.

Ever feel pressured to scale your freelance business? Got too many clients and not enough time?

In this podcast episode, we chat with freelance consultant Kate Collinson about the power of staying small. Having worked for digital agencies in New York and Melbourne, she has has a wealth of experience working for brands such as Nike and Sports Girl. But after she was made redundant from a start up, she decided to switch things up and launch her own consultancy business.

But as her client base grew, so did the pressure to scale and grow a team. At the end of 2018, Kate went through a period of real depression. As she worked her way through this she realised that she didn't have to say yes to everything. In fact, the opposite was true. She started saying no. She focused on creating a sustainable business - one that gave her freedom to do the things that made her happy.

This is a great reminder that we don't need to scale our businesses and make more money. Instead we should look at what really makes us happy and build a sustainable business without the burnout.

Kate is a member of our She Mentors Members' Club so feel free to request a Mentor Hour with Kate and connect with her at Katecollinson.com

In this podcast episode I chat with Gemma Lloyd the co-founder of Work180, a jobs platform with a difference: Work180 publishes information around employer’s pay equity, flexible working and paid parental leave policies, so you can suss them out before you even apply for a job.

So for lots of women out there this is a fantastic resource because you can do your homework and see which companies that support diversity, inclusion and equality.

We discuss:

👉 Why paid parental leave is more important than ‘maternity’ leave

👉 How to broach the subject of parental leave with your employer

👉 Return-to-work policies and flexible working

👉 Why companies need to be transparent about their policies

👉 Unconscious bias and the Gender Pay Gap
