A strong link has been identified between HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence: forced sex directly increase the risk of HIV transmission as a result of physical trauma; violence or threats of violence limit the ability to negotiate safer sex; inadequacies in justice systems result in a disincentive to reporting rape and/or seeking post-exposure prophylaxis; childhood sexual abuse leads to sexual risk taking in later life; and sharing HIV results may increase the risk of a violent response by a partner.

We caught up with Zimasa Nqabeni and Tokologo Ngakane, the organizers of the national Total shutdown march against gender based violence that happened on 1 August 2018 as they spoke about the significance of such a movement.
