World Mental Health Day on 10 October is aimed at creating public awareness around issues related to mental health. As we commemorate those suffering from illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and traumatic brain injuries, we also think of our carers – the ‘invisible healthcare system’ we seldom acknowledge. These caregivers, often family or friends, play a significant role in the treatment and support of patients living with relatives living mental health problems.
