Today is the final day of the three weeks that had been initially set down for the arbitration hearings, with no end in sight. Police say they've been forced to take the Gauteng Department of Health to court because they were not cooperating in investigations into the deaths of Mentally ill patients. Major General Charles Johnson has told the Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearings that they're currently investigating 127 of the 141 deaths. Thirty-eight inquests have been opened. The other 89 are being treated as inquiries for now as they had death certificates indicating that they had died of natural causes. Johnson says the department's lack of cooperation has delayed their investigations as they do not have the deceased's medical records.
