Government has spent 32-billion rand to settle historic debt owed by students to universities between 2013 and 2015. This is in response to a wave of protests over fees which broke out in 2015. Speaking during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament, President Jacob Zuma said this was one of government's ways of showing that the state is committed to addressing the funding crisis.
