Animal protection body, the NSPCA (National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) wants to be able to itself instigate criminal proceedings in instances where the state declines to prosecute. In 2010, the NSPCA intervened in the ritual slaughter of a camel in Lenasia. Despite the evidence collected by the NSPCA, the state declined to prosecute.
