The United Nations Secretary General has designated Pakistani rights activist Malala Yousafzai as the youngest UN Messenger for Peace. At just 19 years old, the world's youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate was appointed to help promote girls education. The youth activist became an international symbol in the fight for girl's education when she survived being shot in 2012 for expressing views in opposition to Taliban restrictions on female education.
