A South Africa based analyst and researcher at the independent Institute for Security Studies, Fonteh Akum, says trouble is brewing in the Republic of Congo ahead of the July 16 legislative elections. Political instability in the Central African country has been rising since President Denis Sassou Nguesso was elected for a third term after a new constitution was adopted in November 2015. Since then, promised governance reforms have not been implemented and opposition leaders remain in detention. Opposition coalition has subsequently threatened to boycott the elections. Forming part of their conditions to participating in the elections, is the release of those detained leaders and an end to the violence meted out against ordinary citizens in the Pool province which has reportedly forced about 80-thousand people to feel.
