• The Automobile Association says fuel prices will be through the roof in December, with the price of oil playing almost no part in this.
• This comes after the fuel increase announcement by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy where it said the petrol price would increase by 81 cents a litre, Diesel by 75 cents a litre and paraffin by 42 cents a litre.
• In November the AA said South Africa’s record-high petrol prices mean it is time to change how fuel costs are calculated.
• Higher average oil prices, a weaker rand and higher levies on petrol and diesel are behind the latest increase, the fourth in the past five months. The AA said that these increases would be disastrous for fuel users and consumers across the board.
• The association said it will now push for answers on how the levies incorporated into the fuel price are being allocated and managed.
• It said the government must also clarify the additional slate levy that was imposed on the fuel price.
