The Gauteng government is working with 241 NGOs and facilities that have the capacity to house the homeless during the lockdown.
At the start of the lockdown 30 boarding schools had also agreed to host the homeless if shelters are full.
But things are not going as planned in the Western Cape.
Calls to close the Strandfontein temporary shelter for the homeless are growing amid the cramped conditions, little protection from inclement weather and several serious incidents of crime since the facility was erected by the City of Cape Town.
Mayor Dan Plato said the city had to act quickly in terms of these regulations and during this unprecedented time the city has have had to adapt its plans to keep up with the requirements expected of municipalities.
