David Kau is one of the most sought-after comedians in South Africa. He
first gained mainstream exposure through the television comedy series
The Pure Monate Show - which he co-created and produced in 2003.
He is also co-creator of Black Only Comedy Show.
He stormed onto the scene with a performance at the 1998 Smirnoff
Comedy Festival in Cape Town, 1998, becoming the first black stand-up
comedian on this coveted comedy stage.
Born in Kroonstad, David began to study electrical engineering in 1995
before dropping it in 1996, in favour of a degree in Performers Diploma
in Speech and Drama at the University of Cape Town in 1996.
He wrote and performed "The Rainbow Nation Tour", his first one-man
show in 1998, and never looked back.
He continued with politically-savvy comedy with his next play,
"Introducing The Peoples Comic" in 2000. David was South Africa’s
representative at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal,
Canada – year 2001.
He performed in a show called Globecom, alongside comedians from New
Zealand, Australia, Europe, and Canada.
He was only meant to do three performances at Globecom, however he
ended up performing in ‘Best of the Festival’ show, and another show
showcasing the best of Black comedians at the festival – "The Best of
Uptown Comics".
David also hosted and judged the SABC1 reality talent show So You Think
You're Funny!, which premiered on the channel on 4 November, 2008.
He’s also producer of the Taxi Ride series.
