According to estimates by the World Health Organisation, depression and anxiety cost the global economy $1 trillion in lost productivity annually, which is worsened by the increased prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In Africa, more than 116 million people were already estimated to be living with mental health conditions pre-pandemic and this has likely increased substantially post Covid.
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) regulations have traditionally placed emphasis on physical safety, accident and injury reduction, as well as maintaining sustainable work environments. However, with the above-mentioned rise in mental health disorders, and chronic illnesses a more encompassing view of health and wellness is needed in organisations and the spotlight turns to this, this World Mental Health Day.
