We are diving deep into the world of sequential art to profile a creator who completely redefines what a comic book page can look like: the incredible J.K. Woodward. If you’ve ever flipped through the dark, atmospheric pages of Peter David’s Fallen Angel, or marveled at the hyper-realistic, stunningly painted characters in IDW’s Star Trek universe, then you already know his work. Woodward bridges the gap between traditional fine art and modern comic storytelling. By choosing gouache on hot-press cotton paper over standard digital inks, he brings a textured, expressionistic depth to mainstream Marvel, DC, and indie titles. He belongs to that elite class of mixed-media visionaries, proving with every single panel that comic book art belongs in a fine art gallery.

What does it really take to turn an RPG idea into a finished game?
In this episode of Continuing Conversations, Michael Dismuke and Jim Johnson sit down with veteran game designers Meric Moir, and Al Spader for an engaging discussion about the realities of RPG development. From the spark of an initial idea to the challenges of playtesting, refinement, and publication, the panel explores what happens behind the curtain of game design.
Together, they tackle big questions: Does a great RPG begin with mechanics, setting, theme, or emotion? How do designers know when to stop worldbuilding and start building a playable game? What lessons emerge when players interact with a game in ways its creators never anticipated? And perhaps most importantly, what separates the RPGs that make it to publication from the countless brilliant ideas that remain trapped in notebooks and hard drives?
Whether you're an aspiring designer, a veteran gamemaster, or simply curious about how your favorite RPGs come to life, this conversation offers practical insights, hard-earned lessons, and plenty of stories from the creative trenches.

To commemorate this milestone, a recent podcast brought together the cast of the USS Pioneer, a group that just wrapped up a five-plus year campaign. This blog post delves into the secrets of their success and offers insights for other groups looking to embark on long-term Star Trek Adventures.
Meet the Crew
The podcast featured a stellar lineup of talent, all deeply involved in the Star Trek Adventures universe and beyond:
Setting the Stage: The USS Pioneer's Mission

Defining Moments: From Crew to Family
When asked about a defining moment, the crew unanimously agreed it was their transformation from coworkers to a close-knit family. This bond transcended the game, with members supporting each other's careers, personal lives, and families. This real-life connection was then woven back into the story, enriching the narrative.
Aha Moments: Character Growth and Unexpected Twists
The players shared several "aha" moments that shaped their characters and the campaign:
The Power of Play-by-Post on Discord
The USS Pioneer campaign was run online via Discord, which presented both challenges and unique advantages:
Lessons in Storytelling and Collaboration
The Pioneer campaign provided valuable lessons in storytelling, collaborative writing, and improvisation:
Gratitude and Lasting Bonds
The podcast concluded with expressions of gratitude and reflections on the enduring friendships forged through the USS Pioneer campaign. The players appreciated the opportunity to grow as role-players and as people, and the shared experience created a bond that continues to this day.
The Legacy of the USS Pioneer
The USS Pioneer campaign stands as a testament to the power of collaborative storytelling, character-driven narratives, and the enduring appeal of Star Trek. Its legacy continues to inspire new players and writers in the Star Trek Adventures community. As Al Spader so eloquently put it, "Captain, Pioneer is all around you."

In this episode, we talk about the Star Trek Adventures RPG, and what you can expect from this show. We’ll also talk to Jim Johnson, the Product Line Manager for Star Trek Adventures. All on this, the first episode of STA Engage.
Ok, with that out of the way, welcome to the show. Let’s start with a basic introduction. I’m your host, Dr RPG, Jeff Harvey. I’m not a real doctor, although I do play one in Star Trek Adventures. I have been a gamer for a very long time, and if there were advanced degrees handed out for things like DMing and nerding about in one's basement...I’d definitely have earned one my now.
This is STA Engage, the show where we talk about the Star Trek Adventures Role-Playing by Modiphius Entertainment.
So what can you expect from this show? Well, in association with the folks over at ContinuingMissionsta.com, we are going to highlight the product STA line, interviews with Modiphious, and STA community members and leaders, discuss ways to improve your game, or get the most out of your character. Story ideas, general Star Trek news...and so much more.
All of this is part of an effort to help fans of Star Trek, and of role-playing better engage with the Star Trek Franchise, the Star Trek Adventures game, and the community at large.
This show is brought to you by the letter Q, the Number 1, and the support of people like you. So, like, subscribe, share, and support us on patreon (eventually). You can find more info about the folks that sponsor us and are putting this show together, our production team at Studio Tembo, the folks at Continuing Mission, and our primary sponsor for season one, Adventure Ink, just follow the links down in the doobly do.
With all that out of the way, I guess the big question is, “ What is STA, and why should I care?”
For that, I think it’s best to talk to one of the creative voices behind Star Trek Adventures; Product Line Manager Jim Johnson:
Next time, we will talk about getting started with your character for STA, and how you can create a memorable persona.
So tune in next time for: Where Noone Has Gone Before, or, Another fine Mess you’ve gotten us into!
Until then, I’m your host, Not a real Dr RPG Jeff Harvey, and on behalf of myself, my guest Jim Johnson, and everybody that works behind the scenes here, don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe, Live Long and Prosper.
