Insights from the 16 Laws of Success by Napoleon Hill, published in 1928.

This is the second and final part of chapter two “Definite Chief Aim”. In the previous article, we discussed why it is important to establish a Definite Chief Aim. In this article, we will go into the details of how to define it and what to do with it when you have.

As a reminder, the Definite Chief Aim is your life’s work. It is the one thing you are going to choose to put your full concentration on. There is no point in choosing something that you are not willing to fully commit to. To ensure that you stay on track for the long term, Napoleon Hill suggests that you first discover your Burning Desire. This is the thing that you are already obsessed with and can do better than most people around you.

STEP 1: Burning Desire

Having just a desire for something will not be enough to align the energies required to fulfill your Definite Chief Aim. You must have a Burning Desire. So how do we find our Burning Desire and then define it enough to be able to put it into words? The key is knowing that you already know what your Burning Desire is. It is the thing that stirs a strong emotional reaction when you think about it or doing it. It is the thing you will do first, even though there may be more pressing matters at hand.

STEP 2: Definite Chief Aim

Mr. Hill gave some very good advice on how to properly write out your Definite Chief Aim. According to him, you need to be as specific as possible. The more specific you are the easier the results will come. He says that you should use the WWWWH method: What, Where Why, When, How. This means you will fully define your Definite Chief Aim in such detail that it will be very clear when you achieve it. And remember, it needs to connect to your Burning Desire.

STEP 3: Master Mind

As we learned in the introductory chapter, every great success has been because of a Master Mind formed by two or more people around a specific endeavor. This will be no different to obtain your Definite Chief Aim. You want to find people who are willing to ally with you on your Definite Chief Aim with complete loyalty and commitment. You also must be willing to remove anyone who wavers from the course because they will destroy the Master Mind if allowed to stay.

Those are the three basic steps on how to create your Definite Chief Aim with the examples of how I did each step for illustration. You must now do the same for yourself. Then, write it out and read it when you wake and before you sleep until you have achieved your Definite Chief Aim.
