Africa's Long Road Since Independence: The Many Histories of a Continent by Keith Somerville
Over the last half century, sub-Saharan Africa has not had one history, but many - histories that have intertwined, converged and diverged. They have involved a continuing saga of decolonization and state-building, conflict, economic problems, but also progress. This new view of those histories looks in particular at the relationship between territorial, economic, political and societal structures and human agency in the complex and sometimes confusing development of an independent Africa. The story starts well before the granting of independence to Ghana in 1957, with an introductory chapter about pre-colonial societies, slavery and colonial occupation. But the thrust of the book looks at Africa in the closing decades of the old millennium and the beginning of the new millennium. While this book examines post-colonial conflicts within and between new states, it also considers the history of the peoples of Africa - their struggle for economic development in the context of harsh local environments and the economic straitjacket into which they were strapped by colonial rule is charted in detail. The importance of imposed or inherited structures, whether the global capitalist system, of which Africa is a subordinate part, or the artificial and often inappropriate state borders and political systems set up by colonial powers will be examined in the light of the exercise of agency by African peoples, political movements and leaders.

In tracing his ancestry, the influence on both his maternal and paternal sides is evident in the values they imbued in their children – the importance of family, the value of hard work and education, an uncompromising moral code, compassion for those less fortunate and unflinching refusal to accept an unjust political regime or acknowledge its oppressive laws. As a young activist in the Pan-Africanist Congress, at the tender age of fifteen, Moseneke was arrested, detained and, in 1963, sentenced to ten years on Robben Island for participating in anti-apartheid activities. Physical incarceration, harsh conditions and inhumane treatment could not imprison the political prisoners’ minds, however, and for many the Island became a school not only in politics but an opportunity for dedicated study, formal and informal. A majority of mothers we encounter on a day to day basis are single mothers. According to statistician general, Pali Lehohla, who presented the report recently, 886 202 babies were born last year. More than 50% of the women who gave birth were single.
Just over 39% of children live with their mothers, and these mothers are struggling to support both themselves and their children financially.

Today is International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD).
This day was started as a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to express support for children with cancer, survivors, and their families.
In developed countries, childhood cancer has a survival rate reaching between 70% and 80% and in South Africa, the rate is only at about 50% CHOC is the only organisation in South Africa that provides nationwide physical and psychosocial support to children with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders and their families.
Relebogile had an Interview with Janine De Grill Inventor of the Icelet Device, which is a device designed to provide accurate up to date personal information for anyone who is unable to communicate them due to accident or illness.
In 2012 Janine De Grill's daughter sustained a head injury and prior to that her father was diagnosed with Alzheime's,
In both of these instances they were unable to communicate even the most basic of information.
This prompted Janine to develop a product which will help anyone in this position due to illness, disability or in the case of an accident.

Fifty-one percent of women comfort ate to calm anxiety, compared to 31 percent of men, various UK media reported.

Before he lived on the street, Danny Oosthuizen had a home like most of us do now. However, when he was diagnosed with HIV, his life changed dramatically. He lost his parents before he was 15 and was taken in by his father's employee, a black woman. Because it was during the Apartheid years, his community of white-speaking Afrikaans-speaking people ostracised him. Being raised by a black woman, his HIV status and his sexual orientation caused him to be heckled by who he thought was 'his race'. He began using drugs and fell into depression, ultimately ending up on the street. Cape Argus' Dignity Project has given Danny and other homeless people a platform to have their voices heard and to be seen.

The media threatened to reveal the identity of kidnap victim Zephany Nurse, and an urgent application had to be brought to prevent that from happening.

Set in Cape Town, the strip follows the journey of a single mother and domestic worker – Nkosazana – from a far flung Cape Town informal settlement, through the sprawling Cape Flats, into the city centre and onto her place of work in the upmarket neighbourhood of Sea Point. It is a story that we all know, by proxy if not through experience. Such journeys have become so essential to our city’s legacy of apartheid and colonialism that we, poor and wealthy people alike, have come to take them for granted.
