If you've traveled around Europe, perhaps you have noticed an occasional 3 inch brass square in the ground. If you have, you've seen a piece of the world's largest decentralized memorial. There are actually over 75,000 of these squares around Europe. They are called Stolpersteines (also called stumbling stones). Stoplersteines are made to recognize those whose lives were negatively impacted because of the Nazis. On a trip through Cologne, Germany, I had the chance to attend the laying of a stone in memory of a victim.
