Dré Georgiou senses a positive mood in the Watford camp ahead of the Golden Girls’ first-ever competitive clash with Billericay Town on Sunday (November 20, 2pm KO).

The Hornets midfielder has thrived so far in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division, most recently notching an assist for Poppy Wilson in last weekend’s 7-1 cup win over Fulham at Grosvenor Vale.

With goals and assists aplenty to her name this term, Georgiou can feel a growing team spirit in the dressing room, with Head Coach Damon Lathrope’s philosophy matching that of the squad.

“We’re really enjoying it on and off the pitch,” Georgiou smiled. “We’re bonding as a team and like the way the gaffer wants to play, we’re all understanding it now. It’s all clicking, so now it’s about smashing the rest of the season!”

A high turnover of players at the start of the campaign hasn’t affected Watford, with six summer recruits starting in last Sunday’s victory. Many are already familiar to 26-year-old Georgiou, who crossed paths with a few of her current teammates at previous points in her career.

She continued: “It’s always nice having new people in the door. Not many players are still here from last season but the girls that have come in are doing well, we’re starting to gel as a team and it’s nice to have them on board.

“I’ve played with a few of them already. In women’s football you know most people already; I played with Bianca [Baptiste] for many years, and there are a few others as well. It’s nice to have them here.”

Returning to league action after nearly a month in Vitality Women’s FA Cup and FAWNL Cup competition, Georgiou is excited to make up ground with two games in hand on league rivals Oxford United, who sit five points ahead on top spot.

“I’m really excited,” added Georgiou. “It’s nice having cup games, but being at home in the league is the icing on the cake. For some reason we keep scoring loads of goals at home, so hopefully that’s the case again this weekend.”
