Goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann hailed his side’s incredible commitment and fighting spirit, after Watford’s dramatic 1-0 victory against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Striker Vakoun Bayo gave the Hornets a late lead with a goal that eventually earned all three points, while Bachmann helped marshal his defence to a clean sheet on the road.

The Austrian shot-stopper was pleased with the efforts from the entire team considering the current injury predicament.

“I think we showed that fighting spirit which we had been lacking in the last two matches,” Bachmann said.

“We know how difficult the situation is with the injuries we have. There are two ways you can deal with it - put your head in the sand and think everything is going against us, or you do what we did today. Everyone stuck together, fought on the pitch and that was the result.

“We knew the last two performances weren’t acceptable, and that’s a nice way to say it. We knew we had to sort ourselves out. We have a good dressing room, with a good mix of characters and leaders.

“I thought at half-time it must be a good game to watch for the neutral, because it was quite end-to-end. There were decent chances from both sides, and we defended incredibly well.

“We were struggling with absentees during the match, like [Christian] Kabasele, but we stuck together until the end with every player that came on, and it’s a great goal from the team.”

Bachmann reserved a special mention for Watford’s central midfield pairing of Mario Gaspar and Leandro Bacuna, both of whom played an important part in securing the victory.

“I don’t really want to name single players, but Mario Gaspar and Leandro Bacuna were great,” he continued.

“Bacuna hadn’t had a club for a few months, and he has started the first few matches here consecutively. He has played a lot of minutes and he is getting fitter, and today was by far his best game.

“Mario especially played well. It’s almost like a Dan Gosling situation, just the other way around [with Gaspar, a full-back, playing in midfield]. You can see the experience he has got and the fight, the running and the tackling. His English isn’t great, but he is trying. Every day in the dressing room he is trying to speak English to people, and he is trying to improve.

“That is exactly the kind of character we need. People who want to be here and want to fight for the team, and that’s exactly what we did today.

“I said before the match that we don’t just need three or four leaders, we need 11 of them. Even the ones who don’t speak English very well or who are young. You need to show that you’re a leader on and off the ball, even if it’s not talking.”

Watford’s number one Bachmann also mentioned the travelling Watford supporters, going on to explain the positive effect that the fans have on the team.

“We were talking in the warm-up with the goalkeeper coaches, and the support we have is incredible,” he added.

“The away stand was full, and that’s incredible in any situation. We have been way below par in the last few weeks, but for them to stick with us has boosted us going forward. We are honestly incredibly grateful for that.

“We know we can rely on them, and we need to make sure that they can always rely on us to at least give 100 per cent every game and fight for the badge.”
