Watford Women Head Coach Damon Lathrope believes his side are well worth their spot in the FAWNL Cup final following a comfortable 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Grosvenor Vale in the final four.

Dré Georgiou’s toe-poke finish and Faye Brough’s header separated the two sides at The Vale, and Lathrope felt the maturity of their defensive performance, coupled with physicality in midfield, was behind the victory.

The final, slated for April 23 against Nottingham Forest at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, is an opportunity for the Golden Girls to add silverware to a successful season, with Lathrope keen for his players to leave a legacy.

“I’m over the moon for the group,” Lathrope beamed. “I think we got what we deserved on the day, it was a very solid performance. We knew what we were coming up against in Wolves and nullified their threats, and were really good ourselves.

“We were excellent to a player. [Physicality] is not our forté but you can see from today and against Portsmouth that we’re more than able to compete. When the game settled down I think our quality showed.”

The game wound down towards the end of the second half with Wolves unable to make a breakthrough, but Watford continued to fashion chances, making three attacking changes. Lathrope was delighted with their game management.

“We said at half-time, in my opinion we dominated the first half and wanted a third goal,” continued the Head Coach. “We didn’t quite get a third but I never felt uncomfortable or that a goal was coming [for Wolves].”

Forest ran out 5-0 winners in their semi-final against Watford’s league rivals Portsmouth, setting up an enticing tie in the final.

“It’s been a target all year,” added Lathrope, 33. “It’s a nationally-recognised cup and I’ve said to the girls, it’s not been done for a long time at Watford.

“We want to be a team that’s remembered, and we’re only going to be if we bring trophies home. We’ve got one more game and it’ll be tough - Forest are a good team - but we’ll be prepared and ready to go.”
