Head Coach Chris Wilder is expecting a response from his players as they head into another important game during the Sky Bet Championship run-in against Huddersfield Town tomorrow afternoon (Friday April 7, 3pm KO).

Following a disappointing defeat to Luton Town last time out, Wilder has made it clear what he wants from his squad in the final seven matches, as the Hornets prepare for a double-header over the Easter weekend facing off against the Terriers and Coventry City.

The boss believes that his side have trained well this week as they look to secure a positive result in their next fixture at Vicarage Road.

“It's about getting the balance because you have to own [the result against Luton Town],” Wilder began.

“The players and I have to own the performance and it stings. It stung me on Saturday and right the way through. I don’t like losing games as a manager. To lose the derby in that manner, you can’t get away from it and you have to own it.

“For me, there is only one thing you can do – come in to work and put it to bed by working hard to make yourself available by doing the best you can. I have to say that training standards have been really good this week and I believe they understood where I came from afterwards.

“It’s not about words, it’s about actions and hopefully we will see the action on Friday. And it’s not just about Friday, it’s about Saturday and Wednesday until the end of the season. From a personal point of view, it’s about your career. You have to be at it day-in and day-out to be a top player.

“These players all come with potential, but to make the grade and be in the big time, they have to produce it on a consistent basis and level. I’m sure we’ll see a reaction Friday and then hopefully that will carry on until the end of the season.”

Ahead of the contest, Wilder explained that he will have a strong squad to pick from with the additional inclusion of players from the Academy to bolster the ranks.

“We know the injury history over the course of the season hasn’t been good, but we have had players come back in,” he added.

“There were a couple of bumps and bruises from the weekend, but we will still have a decent bench, and we might have to leave some players out of the matchday squad. I’m all in for difficult decisions – I want it to be as difficult as possible, whether it’s in games or training. I want everyone to be fit and available, and I don’t want to make an easy decision.

“Plus the fact that we have added Ryan Andrews, James Morris has been with the squad for a long time and Adrian Blake has been with us this week. I want the youngsters to have a feel of first-team training as well. We have decent numbers and if we turn up and say yes, then I think we give ourselves a good opportunity of winning the game.”

Heading to Hertfordshire off the back of a vital victory over promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, Wilder acknowledges that the Terriers will prove to be a tough test.

He continued: “Huddersfield Town will be dangerous opponents for us. It will be a difficult Championship game with two teams fighting for different reasons. Their form recently has been good, with an away win at Millwall – you can’t get away from that – and a win against Middlesbrough who are a form team.

“They will come as players who are buoyed from what happened last Saturday and they will want to continue that because their fight is a big one to stay in the division.”
