Head Coach Chris Wilder took responsibility for a disappointing performance and result at Vicarage Road as Huddersfield Town came from a goal down to beat Watford 3-2.

Despite Yáser Asprilla’s opener - the Colombian's first for the club - Watford conceded three to the Terriers before Britt Assombalonga’s injury-time goal reduced the arrears in the Sky Bet Championship clash.

Speaking after the match, Wilder explained that he knew what to expect from his opponents and had no complaints about the result at full-time.

“I take responsibility for that performance,” Wilder began. “We enjoy it when we win and like to take the plaudits, so I’ll take the responsibility for that and I’ll own the performance and the result.

“We set the team up to play a certain way, which I thought they did. We knew what was coming and we understood the challenge of playing a team on a good run and fighting for their lives.

“I’ve played and managed so many formations and styles so we knew it would be a low block and they would be dangerous on the counter attack, defending for their lives, while having the energy to counter.

“We knew they would be good at set-plays, which they were, so the warning was there before. For the first 20 or 25 minutes we controlled possession, but it means nothing if you don’t defend right.

“We score our goal to get ourselves in the lead and Yáser Asprilla should possibly make it two, but he didn’t. It was a really poor goal [we conceded]. A really poor three goals on our behalf - the timing of them as well.

“A counter attack that should’ve been stopped, a set-play we didn’t deal with and another counter attack that wasn’t defended well enough. Regardless of formation, we didn’t defend our goal well enough. And they saw the game out pretty comfortably.”

Speaking on his team specifically, Wilder believes his side gave it their all but felt they were powerless to affect the result in front of a disappointed home crowd.

He continued: “Did I see a team that gave up? No, they went to the end. I believe they tried to get a result out of the game. Being 3-1 down and with the mood around the place being negative, which isn’t a criticism of the supporters whatsoever because they had every right to be negative with the way the game went.

“I will take that responsibility for the way the game went. I set the team up, I formulate the shape and the tactics. I own that performance.

“We would love it to be an incredibly positive environment, but I don’t have any criticism of the supporters whatsoever. I said my piece last week and it’s my job to manage the football team and try to do our best, or organise and put in a structure to get a result against a team that is going well. We tried to do that, but we didn’t do enough of it and conceded three poor goals.”
