Having enjoyed a five-match unbeaten run in the second-tier, Hull City were finally defeated by Middlesbrough last time out as they lost 3-1 at the Riverside (Wednesday April 19).

The Tigers are currently ranked 16th in the table under the stewardship of Liam Rosenior, who made more than 150 appearances for the club as a player.

Rosenior will be hoping for a victory against the Hornets, as he and his charges look to bounce back from midweek disappointment and spark a positive end to the 2022/23 season.

• Only in two previous Football League seasons have both games between Hull and Watford been drawn - in the third-tier in 1963/64 and second-tier in 1969/70.

• Watford have won two of their last 10 league games against Hull City, failing to score in their last two against the Tigers.

Ahead of the match against the Tigers, the Hornets’ boss Chris Wilder gave an update on his squad’s fitness.

He said: “There were a couple of bumps and bruises after Wednesday [v Cardiff City], but hopefully those players will be alright in terms of selection for the weekend. James Morris took a whack playing for the Under-21s during the week - so we’ll look at his situation - but we should have the same group that’s been available for most of my time here.

“Craig Cathcart had a bang in training, so he’s been out of action for the last couple of games. He’s in line to train today [Friday April 21], and hopefully he’ll travel with the group to Hull.

“There’s been a lot of talk about Academy players, particularly with Ryan Andrews having come into the team. There’s a pool of players we’ve been looking at, and I would like to have Jack Grieves and Tobi Adeyemo involved, but unfortunately they’re injured at the moment. Adrian Blake is going to be involved with us, which is good.”

For Hull City, centre-back Alfie Jones will be missing with a quadricep tear that has kept him out of the last two outings. Forwards Aaron Connolly and Óscar Estupiñán remain unavailable, as well.

Chris Wilder, Watford Head Coach:

“We all know that Wednesday night was hugely disappointing, and the lucky ones will have the opportunity to put that right on Saturday. When you get beaten like that, I always think the best answer is to be found on the pitch.

“In the face of criticism, we have to respond. I know what my reaction would have been as a player, and how a good footballing pro would react, and it’s up to our players to show the appropriate quality and characteristics. They need to chuck a few punches back to that last performance and criticism, and show the right attitude.

“There’s still loads to play for - there are nine big points at stake, and we have an obligation to fight to the best of our ability for the fans spending their hard-earned money coming to support us. We’ll fight right to the end, and that continues at Hull.”

Liam Rosenior, Hull City Head Coach:

“We’re safe in the league, so that’s the objective for the season done. We’re trying to build something special for next season, and now we’re playing against a really good Watford team full of very good individual players.

“There’ll be spells in the game when we’ll be on top, and there’ll be spells when they’re on top - it’s about whether we can take control of those moments, because in our last game [v Middlesbrough] we were tremendous at times but switched off for a period, which is unacceptable. For us to get to where we want to be, we need to be winning games and playing well at the same time.”
